Backdated to December 23, 2023. Darcy stops by to welcome Topaz home from London and introduce her to some of the mansion's newest residents.

Topaz had moved from lying in bed to lying on her couch while Midnight wandered around and reacclimated to her home cat trees and meowed to see if the acoustics had changed.

She was sure whoever knocked on her door just wanted to see Midnight, so she called, "Come in," and closed her eyes. They could pet, she could nap, and maybe Midnight would be quiet. Everyone won.

Crookshanks and the kittens trailed after Darcy as she let herself in. "Hey you, long time no video screen." She set a bag down on the counter, quietly shooing the cats towards Midnight, and opened the fridge, depositing a few bowls of a vegetable stew before stashing some bread in a cabinet. "You're probably going to be jumped on by the children, fair warning," she added, grin in her voice as the kittens sniffed everything in sight.

"Child-"

She was cut off by one of said children hopping right on her stomach. The kitten wasn't heavy, of course, but it was still a shock. "What in the..." Topaz opened one eye to look at the little kitten that was now climbing up her chest. "Where did you get kittens?"

Midnight was still up in her tree, watching the other kitten roam with a wary eye.

"They're Sharon's children, but I am now full-time foster mom because Kyle doesn't trust that two kittens won't become ALL the kittens. In return, she gets mostly unrestricted access and also gets to watch her children and Crookshanks when I'm out of town. It's not much different than our arrangement pre-kittens, except supposedly her husband has the same access. I'm still not quite sure he exists, honestly," Darcy said with a shrug before pulling a treat from the pocket of the hoodie she had on and holding it out to Midnight. "I missed you too, little void princess," she cooed at the cat. "Don't worry, the kittens just want to smell everything and play. They'll behave or Auntie Midnight will put them in line, won't she?"

"Shar - the purple half-cat one?" Topaz blinked a few times, trying to figure out how that was supposed to work while the kitten tried to climb on her shoulder. Midnight sniffed the offered treat, then licked Darcy's fingers and took the snack in one swift movement. The second kitten was now furiously sniffing around the base of the tree. "How?"

"Rescued them after the flood," she replied promptly. "Despite claiming she's married, I'm pretty sure Sharon's not making use of conjugal visits. I'm not asking, mind, I don't need to know." She cupped Midnight's face, fingers rubbing the base of her ear. "And you, how was time away? Enriching? Fulfilling? Good foods?"

Midnight purred loudly, turning her head this way and that to help Darcy get the right angle, reveling in the love and attention she so clearly deserved. "We found a nice little shop that sold homemade treats," Topaz said from the couch, relaxing and offering the kitten a few scritches. "She nearly took my fingers off trying to get them, so I had to leave them on the floor for her."

"Miss ma'am, you are not supposed to be taking off Mom's fingers," Darcy scolded with a light boop to Midnight's nose. "Save that for hostiles, honestly. Although I can't blame you, I think Marie-Ange has considered taking hand and all a few times with the cinnamon rolls from Betty's. Just learning from the best, yeah?"

Topaz raised her head to look at Midnight, then at Darcy. "If she's learned assassination techniques from Marie-Ange, then I need a new place to sleep."

"Midnight would never assassinate you, don't be silly," she teased. "Oh, one more thing." She turned, grabbing something luridly pink out of the bag and tossed it to Topaz. "Found this at a little market while I was on mission. They're based on myths around Soul Catchers, which are little beings that act as guides through life and afterlife. This one's named Topaz, so I couldn't resist." Darcy rubbed the back of her neck a little awkwardly. "I don't know that I necessarily do or don't believe in something like that, but the two I got - yours and one for me - haven't set off any of the magic alarms or anything, and they've been here a few months."

It was pink, and absolutely not something Topaz ever would have bought on her own. But she loved it, and she loved that Darcy had thought of her. All of that was conveyed in a small, honest smile as she sat up and took the little stuffie. "It's great," she said honestly. "Thank you."

"You're welcome. Brought you some veggie stew too. Adapted a recipe I found online, so it's got chickpeas and spinach and other things and the broth is tomato and some spices. There's feta for it, and bread in your cabinet. Just so you can have a few quiet meals if you need them." Darcy grinned. "Stars know I need my quiet from the main area sometimes after being away for a while. Otherwise, I can get out of your hair, let you rest and adjust?"

"Actually... do you mind staying? I think I could use the company." She'd never admit it under threat of death, but she had been lonely the last couple months, alone in London with only phone calls and Midnight. "Besides, I need someone to catch me up on what's been happening around here."

"Of course." Darcy slipped onto the end of the couch, giving the blanket covered bundle that was Topaz an affectionate pat. "What do you want to catch up on first?"

An excellent, light log. Friends checking in with each other is always great to see — Darcy showing her affection with attention and gifts, while Topaz allowing her to stay and simply enjoying the company. Plus, kittens make everything better.
