Powers Training - Rogue and Shatterstar
Feb. 19th, 2024 07:33 pmBackdated to 2/19/24 Rogue absorbs Shatterstar's powers to help him with powers training.
He was incredibly grateful that Rogue had agreed to help him. Shatterstar had to admit to himself that, with the exceptions of Haller and Mr Gibney, that he was a little starstruck by all of the X-Men and had assumed when he sent his e-mail that she would have been too busy to help him. Or that she would remember their less than stellar first meeting and not want to.
Instead they were in the danger room and she was about to copy his powers. He'd found a metal rod for her to use as a channelling device so that she could see what he meant by it hurting less when it wasn't just coming from his body. (She may have been an X-Man, but Shatterstar wasn't about to trust his sword in someone else's hands).
Rogue knew little to nothing about Shatterstar, nor had she asked around. She found it easier if she copied powers without knowing. that way she could actually look at what it was that was happening.
"Before we start," she said, "I jus' wanna let you know what this is gonna be like, so you can be aware. I really really encourage you to clear your mind, otherwise sometimes, I can take memories or like ...mannerisms or personality along with the powers. Y'all are gonna feel a bit of a tug, and it's gonna be kinda scary but I know when to stop. I'll jus' take enough to be able to use your powers, and hopefully not much more. It will go away in a day or so, so it's not like I will keep them forever. I jus' want you to give your consent knowing fully what's about to happen here."
Shatterstar absolutely hated everything coming out of Rogue's mouth. Even with the psychic shielding training he had received he was tempted to call this off right here. What if she took something she shouldn't? What if he was left that shell of a real person he'd put so much effort into no longer being? What if she took Benj?i But he had to do this, he had to. So he slammed up all the defenses he had and straightened his spine, not letting himself feel anything.
"It'll be fine."
Everything in his body language said he would not be fine. Rogue hesitated for a moment before nodding. She knew how desperate it could feel when your powers were out of control. She didn't love taking people's powers this way either, it felt entirely too intimate, but she would do what she had to do to give him some peace. "Alright then." Heading to the wall, she inputted a few things and turned the DR into a regular looking gym. She wanted to create a sense of familiarity while also knowing that no matter what the outcome was, nothing would be damaged.
"How do you wanna begin? You wanna sit down while I touch your skin?"
Shatterstar held out his hand stiffly. It was a little less intimidating to be in a gym than the danger room, but nothing would make this pleasant. "I think a handshake will work."
Rogue nodded again. That made sense to her too. Taking off her gloves, she tossed it aside and took his hand.
There was an overwhelming sense of FEARFEARGETOUTFEAR that she had to focus hard to get past. The walls were thick, no memories were going through. Instead, it was a purely emotional response that was building, building and --
Her arm flung out, an electric current shooting out of her hand, exploding a punching bag. Fluff filled the air and Rogue's eyes widened as she felt a noise thrumming within her. Standing there for a moment, she swallowed hard. "So. That was an experience.... feels like ...super sonic waves or something, am I right?" She gestured to his sword. "Do you use that as a sort of divining rod, helps focus those waves and give them something else to bounce off rather than your body? It probably jitters your brain, I'm surprised y'all don't get daily concussions from this."
It was startling, to see his own power explode out of someone else even if that's what he had agreed to allow Rogue to do, had asked her to help with, even. "I use my sword and it helps focus them. I... Haven't noticed it hurt my brain, though that would explain the dizziness."
Shatterstar thought for a moment. "Usually I get some warning, enough to direct it." He said it like an apology.
Rogue was listening to the words, but she was also trying to center herself. It oddly felt like vertigo as well, this sense of movement from within. "Yeah, I can see how an early warning system could help." She reached for a barbell, instead of using his sword and tried to focus onto that -- the blast came out the end in a huge arc. "Huh. Okay, so your sword probably also makes it more ...accurate, I guess I should say. What else was it you were struggling with?"
"Mostly the side effects," Shatterstar explained as he watched his power come out of this woman. "I just... Other people seem much more adapted to their mutations. When I had to use them in a combat situation the exhaustion and harm to my body was less than ideal."
Less than ideal was an understatement.
"I want to you know if this is a limitation I will be stuck with."
That was a good point, regarding the adaptation and Rogue couldn't think of something to say back. The fliers all seemed to have hollow bones, or a natural protection from cold. The strongest of them had the bodies able to withstand that weight. For Star to have a power that would consistently give him migraines if he couldn't control it ....
"When you feel that vibration, can you control it slightly within like how you do when you direct it?" She tried to tap into the powers again and could feel it growing. "Your powers are already starting to fade a little bit in me, so that probably helps but I can almost ...control the power away from my head, if that makes sense and feel it right into my hands. Wanna try?"
He felt immensely embarrassed for never having thought to try. Shatterstar tried to focus one where the vibrations stemmed from and realized that it wasn't really his chest, but more like spine and ribs. He tried to spread it more evenly to his whole body so it wasn't shooting up his spinal column. It was like a tension, growing and growing the more he thought about it until he had to release it in a wide arc.
His body ached and he felt everyone of his joints. But he didn't feel as dizzy as he normally did. He also noticed his powers felt... depleted.
He took a few deep breaths. "Miss Rogue? You've used other powers before. Can you control how much of a power comes at once?"
"Yes." And to show, she lightly reached over to one of the random pieces of gym equipment and effortlessly crushed the pure metal with the slightest pressure from her palm. "I am permanently super strong, for reasons you don't wanna know ...so I gotta control it all the time. What I did to you, sucking out your power? Once upon a time, I could never turn it off, and that was jus' my life. I always had gloves, always covered up cuz my poison skin would have had you in a chokehold in my brain. So you can .... you can do it eventually. Just gotta practice, and tinker, and see what works. That's why I'm a pretty handy mentor to have around. I can take nigh near anything. Invulnerable too ...and I got a few healing factors kicking around in here."
Shatterstar nodded seriously. This is what he had hoped to hear, that he could learn to control the output. Currently it felt like he could turn it on or off, and while he could control where the output was, he couldn't control the intensity. "This is good. This is good to hear."
"Yeah?" She smiled. "I'm glad then. And if you want to work on this anymore, or get in here and just ....blow shit up, that's what this space is for. It's safe and it's something we can use. There's also a quarry out yonder that I use sometimes when i want to just throw around real rocks, so let me know if you wanna ever hit that up." Rogue tilted her head. "I'm here for ya, Star. You ain't gotta be alone anymore."
He looked away from her uncomfortably, but nodded at the reminder he wasn't alone.
It was good not to be alone.
"Thank you."
