Back dated log: Liam and Kyle
Feb. 7th, 2024 08:46 pmLiam shuts down the GenX recroom for renovations. He forgot one important detail. Permission.
Liam hadn't gotten very far in his plan for the Rec Room yet, just moving furniture and bringing in his tools so he could get working. He had a lot more to bring into the space from the woodshop, but he had to take it slow since his torso was still healing. At least the bruising was fading pretty well and he wasn't in pain unless he over did things.
Checking his plans, he started to make marks on the wall for his studs.
Five text messages of "WTF the rec room is closed" or variants of that had hit his phone in the house Kyle was in the Danger Room. He checked his phone, still in his uniform pants and t-shirt, and opted to skip the post-session shower for reasons of Urgency and also deep curiosity.
Mostly curiosity. Madin would've said if they were doing a reno, and the room didn't -need- anything usually, aside from the occasional speaker re-mount or outlet repair.
He stopped outside the door, flicked the caution tape open with a claw, and took a careful inhale before opening to determine the culprit.
"Liam. What the hell."
"Uh... hi?" Liam wasn't sure why Kyle was there all gross and sweaty and..."I forgot to send the email, didn't I?" he knew he'd forgotten something. "Surprise? I finished my project?"
"You forgot to send the email." Kyle took a slow look around the room. Painter's drop cloths, chalk marks, a stud finder, even the mini shop vac. He was doing the project 'correctly', he's just forgotten a really important part. "So. Do you know how old this place is?"
"Over 100 years," Liam answered, "but it's not historical. And this isn't the first time you've had to renovate," he'd done his homework even if he forgot to turn it in. "I'm not painting. Or even really changing anything structurally other than a few holes. I...ah... look," he went over to get the plans, showing Kyle. "It can all be removed and the holes spackled, easily."
"It's not not historical, we just don't do the paperwork because we've got a secret military plane in the basement." Kyle rubbed the bridge of his nose. "So when you're gonna shut a room down and renovate, you gotta clear it through somebody, which means I gotta clear it through the Institute. Which I am gonna do, because I can see what you're up to, it makes sense and I know you're doing it right." The word 'but' was all over Kyle's face. "But. I'm also gonna make you sign in and outta the workshop for a month because now I gotta do paperwork and fudge some dates and make it look like I gave you permission."
That sucked. Liam sighed, but didn't protest or even roll his eyes. He should have gotten permission, and he'd intended to, he'd just.... forgotten. Which, yeah. "Fine," he agreed with another sigh, "I meant to, really. I just. Guess I got caught up with everything and forgot." Is not like he had nothing going on. It wasn't an excuse though. He knew, he had to do better next time.
"Yo, it happens. You had some shit happen, having to do some tedious paperwork'll mean next time you'll remember." Kyle padded into the room, and poked at the chalk marks with an extended claw. "This room's been reno'd so many times, you can get away with a couple more holes." He tapped at the wall, and marked a few places with one of the chalk pieces. "About half the common areas are kind of a facade around the old original build, so that if we ever did have to register, we could pull it down without a lot of issues. Twenty five years of mutant teenagers, it's pretty sturdy, and you've got a good set of marks here. Just maybe one or two more in case you and Sharon and, I dunno, Hope or Star or something are all up in this thing at the same time."
He nodded, making a note, "I weighted it for Sharon times 10, because jumping and stuff. But I can increase it, sure," because it might be multiple jumps, not only the one. And hopefully, he would continue to grow, he had put on a full two inches since coming to Xavier's and he had no idea when he might stop. "Huh. That's cool with the fascade. Is that normal?" Liam didn't know too many historical buildings.
"I dunno, it's not like, not normal, but I know it's not how everywhere does it. We're a special situation, you know?" Kyle waved his clawed hand a little. "The way I hear it, back when Scott was your age, they had to start reinforcing this place, and it hasn't stopped since. I like the giant cat tree, it's good work. Good use of the carpet scraps, nice balance to it, I wish I'd had one back when I was here for high school." He tilted his head, he could picture it too, perched up high with a wireless X-Box controller, spitting insults at his friends as they played a game. "Remind me when the weather's better, I gotta show you kids the treehouse."
"Tree house?" Liam's ears practically shot to attention as his tail began quivering over one shoulder in excitement. "Now?" he looked over at his barely project. "Later. But yeah.... I've wanted one for a while and my dad made up the blue prints for my room at home, which I modified to fit here," he cocked his head to one side, "Do you want a scratching block? I've got one, three."
"I've got like four, but thanks." Kyle said. "Used to room with a guy who would just make stuff whenever he got bored, I've got one made of some kind of memory plastic stuff, it's pretty rad. My shower mat's made of the same stuff." He glanced around the room, and then used one hand to pull himself up on the second level of the human-sized cat tree. "Yeah, you did good work. Five bucks you're gonna find Shatterstar in here doing pullups on this thing."
Rolling his eyes, Liam shot back, "If I wanted $5, I'd just ask you for $5," he had made sure it could hold about a ton. Not all in one spot and they were issues if people were jumping and adding momentum and whatnot, but it should still maintain integrity through usual wear and tear.

Honestly nice to see Kyle bonding with/tolerating Liam over benign issues like thoughtless alteration of a century-plus year old building. Not really passing the torch, but perhaps walking torch-adjacent.
