Mel discovers Paige has a new piece of jewelry.

“Hey Paigey, whatcha doin’?” Mel was in a bright mood and wanted to hang out with (read: bother) Paige for a bit. She’d barely seen her all week.

Paige kept typing for a minute before closing her laptop. “Discussion post. What’s up?”

Mel waltzed over and flopped onto Paige’s bed. “Nothin’ much. Jus’ wanted to say hi.” Ever observant, she zeroed in on the ring on Paige’s thumb. It was not her style at all- which meant it must be from someone… mixtape boy perhaps?

“Where’d ya get that?” Mel said, looking at the ring pointedly.

“Hmm?” Paige looked down and saw she’d been messing with the ring Jono insisted she take. “Oh, friend gave it to me. It’s pretty even if it’s a bit big.” She moved her hands down to her lap. “How’s the job?”

“It’s fine, but we ain’t movin’ off that so quickly. Who is this friend? When did he give it to you? Where did he give it to you?” She paused for effect. “An’ most importantly, is he really jus’ a friend? It’s a ring Paigey, that’s like so romantic.”

Paige raised an eyebrow. “What makes you so sure my friend is a he?” Just because Mel was right about Jono didn’t mean Paige was going to tell her that. Knowing her sister, if she did say it was Jono, she’d never hear the end of it from any of her siblings.

Mel rolled her eyes. “Cause it’s obviously from that mixtape boy of yours- it’s emo enough.”

“He’s not emo, he’s grunge. There’s a difference,” Paige responded almost automatically. Turns out all those conversations about music had actually taught her a decent amount about music subcultures. She was going to have to remember to mute the siblings group chat when Mel left. “Besides, it’s a friend thing. He has a matching one, it was cute.”

“He has a matchin’ one!? Omigosh Paige!” Mel could admit that was super cute, even if mixtape boy was the enemy.

“He had an extra, it’s not like he bought ‘em special or anythin’. Don’t go blowin’ this outta proportion.” Paige really needed to get better at locking her bedroom door. Or keeping her hands below eye level.

“Whatever you sayyy,” Mel smiled innocently.

Paige frowned. “Mels, it’s none of your business and I don’t want you makin’ things up about me ‘n my friend. Drop it.”

“Fine. I can mind my own business! I won’t even tell Sam an’ Jay!” Well, immediately anyways.

“Mmmhmm.” It would be a cold day in hell before Paige believed that. “You wanna watch a movie or somethin’? I can make popcorn.” Better redirect Mel before she inevitably came back to Paige’s personal life.

“Sure!” Mel didn’t mind the redirect. If Paige was actually dating this boy, she would find out soon enough.
