Sharon awakens in the back of a van in cat form alone.

Consciousness came slowly, curled in the corner of the back of a parked van, partially obscured by the benches, doors open and the engine silent. Moments before, it was supposed to be some kind of roller coaster experience, but that did not seem to be the case.

Sharon blinked, disoriented. She remembered very little. An eye-searing flash, then a confused memory of being jostled around. Nothing about getting into a vehicle, and only a vague recollection of shifting at some point. She was in her smallest form, she noticed, which wasn't uncommon after falling asleep in an uncomfortable position. Her friends knew this. They wouldn't have forgotten her.

Hairs lifted along Sharon's back to bloom down the length of her tail. She seemed to be alone, and nothing good came of waking up in a secondary location to which you had been delivered by an unmarked van.

Cautiously, the cat crept to the open door and peered out. She seemed to be in some sort of parking garage, its security shutters firmly drawn. A glance toward the ceiling revealed the sightless black eyes of concealed security cameras. Her ears flattened.

Both the van and the garage contained the scent of her friends mixed with that of strangers. They had been brought together, she guessed, and then moved again. She smelled no blood to indicate there might have been a struggle. This was out of character for several of them. They must not have regained consciousness for the subsequent move.

Sharon jumped out of the van and began to explore the garage. She kept her movements aimless on the off chance anyone watching the security cameras might find her presence suspicious. It was likely security would be more preoccupied with the mass abduction, but there was no point taking chances.

A quick circuit of the area confirmed that all exits were locked. Her friends' scents lead to a heavy, key-card protected door, and as she'd suspected the shutters were tightly sealed. No way out.

Almost. The parking garage was an enclosed structure, and any enclosed structure needed ventilation. Sharon found her eye drawn to the boxy silver ducts that hung from the ceiling, considering. Some were short blocks that only housed extraction fans, but there had to be a vent for clean air . . .

The cat paused at one wall in particular. There, near the roof, was a vent sporting an industrial-sized fan. It wasn't on at the moment. She hoped that continued to be the case, or else this attempt was going to be extremely short-lived.

Sharon took a few steps back to get a running start. then launched herself at the wall. Concrete was easily porous enough for her claws to find purchase. She landed halfway up the wall, flexed her claws, and scrabbled the rest of the way. The space between the blades was just wide enough to allow her to wriggle through.

As the cat began to crawl she had to admit to herself she had no idea how HVAC systems worked. Possibly this would lead her outside, and possibly it would suck her into industrial machinery. After this was over she really should research the topic.

Either way it was a problem for Future Sharon.
