Madin and Mel, post TILT. Backdated to Wednesday 10/4

Mel had been trying all week to run in to Madin without going directly to their suite, and it had been proving difficult. Turns out living in a huge mansion meant it was easy to avoid someone if you wanted too.

So when she saw them across the lawn when coming back from her run, Mel jogged over hurriedly. “Hey, can we talk?”

Madin flinched slightly on seeing her. "Um, yeah. Sure."

Mel took a breath. “I wanted to apologize fer how I acted in the.. game. I ain’t sure what the fuck came over me but it weren’t fair on you and I’m so so sorry.” She grimaced. “I’m not- I… I guess that’s it. You saved my life an’ I’m grateful. Yeah.. um. yeah.”

Madin shook their head. "No, you don't have to. I still think you kind of jumped to me murdering you a bit fast. Like way too fast."

“Yeah, still.. I’m- I’m not suicidal. I don’t know why I was actin’ that way or askin’ that of you but I shouldn’t’a. I’m sorry.”

"Why didn't you just jump? We thought we were up high. Why did you have to make it my problem?" Madin couldn't look at Mel and stared across the lawn instead.

“I don’t think I wanted my last moments to be falling.” Mel bit her lip when she said it, aware of how it sounded. God, she really was an ass.

"So you wanted me to beat you to death? Stab you?" Madin wanted to cry. "Do you have. Do you know what that's like?"

“I don’t know what I wanted! I don’t know.” Mel was nauseous thinking about it. “I jus’ wanted one of us to get out and it seemed like the only way.”

"Oh my god," Madin said, no idea what else to say.

“I… I’m gonna go now.. but if you don’t wanna see me around, tell me to fuck off an’ I will.” Lord knew she would deserve it. “I really am sorry Madin.” Mel said, turning to leave.

Madin was so bad at this. "No. Don't go. I'm sorry. I'm not good with people and now I've made it weirder." So bad at this.

“No! Yer fine, it’s fine. I’m-“ Mel pulled a face. This was becoming so awkward. She smiled weakly. “Jus’… we good? I like you a lot and I don’ want things to be… weird..”

Don't ask me to kill anyone ever again, or kill you. "Yeah, we're good." Madin gave her a weak smile. "I think I need a drink."

I won’t, I promise. Mel laughed a bit at that, albeit dryly. “Yeah, me too..” She paused a moment. “Actually, um.. we’re throwing a bit of a party fer my sister on Saturday. If you wanna come, I’d like that. Drinks’ll be provided!”

Madin gave a small smile. "I'd really love that. It's not just a family thing, is it?"

“Nah, Sam’s inviting’ like half the mansion. A proper birthday celebration.” She grinned with a lightness that juxtaposed everything prior in the conversation. “I’m glad. It’ll be fun.”

What did you say in this situation? Did you press Mel on how this was the unbelievably fucked up icing on the completely fucked situation they'd been in? Or did you let it go, like the whole hill country militia situation that her family had with the Cabots and they hadn't evacuated the damn kids?

Madin looked at Mel carefully and let it go. Took the lightness at face value. "Awesome."

“Great! I’ll make sure you get all the details. Oh, an’ it’s a surprise, so if ya see Paige make sure to not mention it.” No need to linger, lest it eat them both up.

Madin nodded. "I can do that." Did you add something about asking if she needed help? Was it too much? "Looking forward to it."

“Me too.” It was said with that same smile, and then a glance down at her watch. “I oughta go an’ get ready fer work, but I’ll, um, see you there, yeah?”

"I'll see you then."

"I still think you kind of jumped to me murdering you a bit fast. Like way too fast."

Geez, Madin, it was just one time.

I treasure the awkwardness of this interaction; Madin is already not socially adept, and Mel is just straight-up mortified. Mel trying to Southern her way out of a little thing like proposed murder by inviting Madin to her sister's birthday party was certainly a . . . choice.

I don’t think I wanted my last moments to be falling.”

Ouch, Mel. This is a great through line to her past traumas, and I'm loving seeing her take initiative to make amends and expand her circles.

Madin is still wonderful, but I do like how they pull back to apologize here for their brusqueness.

Or did you let it go, like the whole hill country militia situation that her family had with the Cabots and they hadn't evacuated the damn kids?

Probably that one (for you, specifically), Madin, but I snorted at their continued questioning on how to deal with the whole situation.
