Clarice and Shatterstar play with knives live blades.

Usually, Clarice trained with her fencing swords in the gym and her fighting swords in the Danger Room. However, since she was on indefinite hiatus from the X-Men and refusing to practice in the Danger Room... the gym it was! Still, over in the fencing lanes, but there was no mistaking the larger katanas with her fencing saber or her wooden bokken.

Now, she danced up and down the lane, her invisible opponent clearly getting a good thrashing.

Shatterstar hadn't seen someone fighting with katana in some time, and not the way that Clarice went at her invisible opponents, much less gracefully than he had been trained before he had switched to primarily doing EMA.

He had been planning on just doing drills with the sword he had inherited from Terry today, but part of him was curious as to compare Eastern and Western styles. But he wasn't sure he should interrupt Clarice. He cleared his throat slightly.

Without turning her head or acknowledging him, Clarice whirled returning to the other end of the lane where Shatterstar was. She knew he was there and watching, but he wasn't her focus. "Hi," she breathed, rotating her wrist to twist the blade behind her arm to keep it safe. "Here to practice?"

"I was planning on it, but I haven't done iaido in some time," he said. Shatterstar did the katas in his mind as a practice to keep telepaths out when he had his lessons with Haller much more frequently than he did in the physical world.

"It's very different from what I've seen you do so far," she acknowledged, "What swords do you prefer in battle?" Normally, she'd be trying to steer Shatterstar away from battle, away from the teams, but she knew he was interested in fighting. So best prepare him.

"I've only used the hand-and-a-half great sword that Terry gave me in a real battle," Shatterstar confessed, imagining that Clarice was probably much more experienced when she was his own age. It didn't occur to him at all that may have been a bad thing if it was true. "So that's my preference."

"Big sword," she commented, sheathing hers and placing it carefully by her bag. Then again, Shatterstar was big enough that he could handle it. "You practically have to wield something like that almost like a baseball bat. How are you at control and accuracy?"

"I am still learning," Shatterstar admitted, as he didn't believe in the perfection of his skills and Clarice was skilled enough to see his mistakes. "But I am very good." He smiled, closed mouth, at her in his pride.

"Rome wasn't built in a day," she grabbed some water, "Wanna spar?" Clarice pulled her saber from her bag. Not the one she used for fencing practice, though it was in the long duffel too, but one with a sharp edge. "It's no long sword, but then, you've got nearly a foot on me anyways," and she had nearly 6" in height compared to her mother.

"Oh yes," he grinned at her as she pulled out the saber, the sharp edge glinting in the light. Sparring with a live blade was something he hardly got to do often enough.

"Then pad up," she wasn't letting him get injured. Nor herself. But he did need to get used to live steel from others, not just himself.

Shatterstar did as he was bid, even if part of him didn't see the point in it. But he also knew that neither of them were invincible and live steel was nothing to joke around with.

In live combat, padding wasn't possible. That wasn't sport, that was life or death. This was practice and padding was necessary, even if it sucked. Because you had to survive training to get to live combat.

Checking him over to ensure it was properly tightened, Clarice stepped back and on to the mat, "No powers as much as possible," she instructed, "What haven't you worked on recently?"

Shatterstar didn't want to admit that he was out of practice with anything, especially since he did try to cycle through everything often. However... "Anticipating another's actions," he said. "I do not often get the chance to fight against someone else who knows what they are doing with a blade."

Everyone had things they preferred to practice and then did it, letting other skills lapse. It was less about how good someone was at something and more how much they enjoyed doing it. So it was good to go back to the things they need to work on more. "Alright," she agreed, no judgement. "Any particular rules?"

"You are gracing me with your experience and I will let you take the lead," Shatterstar said with a solemn nod. He didn't particularly want a set of rules, but it would be better and safer if they had at least something.

Alright then. Moving swiftly, Clarice used her body and sword to push Shatterstar backwards, getting up close where neither of them had much advantage given the longer blades. Then, she dropped down so he was practically standing on top of her as she slid batten his legs and behind, tapping him with her sword. "Smaller isn't an easier opponent."

Especially when that smaller party was as experienced and crafty as Clarice. Shatterstar smiled to himself. "Again?" He asked.

"Again," she agreed.
