Emily and Mel have a rooftop meeting.

Emily had made her way finally to the roof of the mansion, drawn by the possibility of seeing people actually fly. Which, if you had asked her at that moment, was just the most amazing thing she’d ever heard of.

So, flying platform, meet one Miss Emily Bright, ready and willing to ask all manner of questions and hopefully even make a friend or two.

There were a few places in the mansion you could reliably find Mel, and the flyer’s perch was one of them. Spotting the ginger from her lazy lap up above, she floated down to say hello. “Hi, it’s Emily right?”

“Guilty as charged,” Emily replied brightly, gaze curious as she took in the older woman. “You don’t have wings. I didn’t think you could fly without wings of some kind.”

Mel shrugged. “Nope, it ain’t a requirement as far as I can tell. Both my brothers here also fly but only one of ‘em has wings- ain’t sure how but it happens but it does.. I’m Mel by the way.”

“Emily,”

She reached out a hand to shake and then looked around curiously.

“Are all your family here then? I’m an only kid, never could convince the folks to give me a little bro or sis.”

“Nah, only the four of us. The rest are back home with Mama.” Mel counted out her siblings exaggeratedly on her fingers. “I’m one of nine. Wouldn’t trade it fer anythin’ but sometimes you wonder.” She shrugged.

“That’s like the rest of my family. My Mum’s that is, Dad doesn’t talk much about his. But! So many uncles, aunties and cousins all over the place. Christmas has always been organized chaos, or so my Aunts like to say.”

Emily couldn’t really see many places to sit and she’d never been much for standing around awkwardly so she pointed to the edge of the flying platform before going to sit down.

She wasn’t particularly afraid of heights and she figured Mel could always catch her if she slipped. Or possibly just scream loudly enough for someone to get there.

“I used to live on a farm in Australia, so we always had heaps of room but I swear each of us could fill up a room with how loud we all were when you got us together.”

Mel floated over to join her on the edge- one of her preferred spots. (Either that or lying flat and watching the clouds). Emily reminded her Cissie in a way, and Paige, or maybe she was just homesick.

“Oh hey, I’m from a farm too. Back down South in Kentucky,” she said. “Havin’ the extended family ‘round sounds nice. Most of ours are either outta the county or don’ like us much. Never really see ‘em often.”

“Thank God,” Emily breathed with a sigh of relief. “Thought I was gonna be surrounded by people who didn’t know which end the rear end of a cow was, let alone what part you milk.”

Emily dangled her feet, kicking them idly as she looked out at the forest in the distance. She thought about how far she’d come from country New South Wales.

“I mean, apart from being kidnapped almost immediately, which from the way everyone acted seems to be a thing here, it’s not been too bad but it’s nothing like back home. Not just the accents but the ways trees look and the weird cereal. How can anyone need that many types of cereal? I thought I was going to have to stand there forever before I could decide which one to try first.”

“Mostly growin’ back home, but we do have chickens. An’ now I got these two horses…” She shook her head. Warren apparently didn’t know the difference between a pony and a horse, or didn’t care, because Sugar and Spice had turned out to be two quarter horses, grey and bay roan respectively.

Mel chuckled. ”We’re certainly spoiled fer choice up here. I still get lost in the grocery store. There’s a couple of aussies around as well, so hopefully not too isolating fer you. Madin’s real nice, so is Marius.”

“Oh wow, you have horses?” Emily’s expression was excited in only the way a sixteen year old girl who had heard the magic word ‘horse’ could be. “What kind? Mum used to take me when she’d have to visit the Arabian stud back home but I wasn’t really allowed to ride any of them, way too valuable.”

“They’re American quarters I think? Lemme pull up a picture.” Mel dug her phone from her pocket, which was honestly a precarious place to have it whilst flying, and scrolled through some photos of the aforementioned equines. “They’re boardin’ at a place near here if you’d ever like t’see ‘em. I try an’ go least once a week but things get busy sometimes.”

“You think that’d be okay? I wouldn’t want to spook them,” Emily waved to her hair, which had taken her brief excitement as a perfect opportunity to start blowing small sparks. She knew they wouldn’t actually do anything even if they hit something but horses didn’t know that. “I haven’t really started training yet and this whole magic thing seems like it has a mind of its own.”

The older girl considered the sparks thoughtfully. “It should probably be alright? They’re pretty even tempered, the boarding place uses ‘em fer lessons with the little kids. Spice maybe more than Sugar though...” She jotted down a note on her phone about looking more into that. “The offer stands fer anytime. I honestly don’ know much about horses so company is always welcome.”

“That sounds awesome then,” Emily replied with a smile.

Finally, a use for Warren's ponies: Tempting farm girls.

Good to see Emily and Mel find someone to connect with about country life. And, uh, the mild kidnapping.

(I especially like the bit about America's weird cereal. We ARE a little extra.)

The first time I saw the cereal eisle I was a bit shocked. So much choice paralysis.
