Madin checks in on one of the mansion's newer residents.

Generalised TW - oblique caution about sexual assault and inappropriate behaviour

Somewhere along the line, Madin had become sort of a responsible adult. Sort of. They'd eventually gotten sick of the vague guilt about not checking up on Emily, even though the kid wasn't their responsibility. She wasn't, technically, anyone's responsibility.

A late check up was better than nothing, right?

“Oh, I’m, hullo,”

Emily paused the episode of Dr Who she’d been watching and grinned at Madin. She’d been meaning to track them down but what with one thing and the whole ‘Congratulations, Emily, you’re not a wizard but you are some weird magical anomaly, isn’t that special?’ She’d not managed to do more than read things and contemplate just how much she didn’t want to think about it at all.

“Did you wanna watch Dr. Who with me? I can start it over? It’s really odd and creepy this one.”

Madin stared at the screen and the man in a rubber mask. "What the fuck is that?" Someone else, in creepy old people clothes and a scarf was doing something.

“Oh, I think this is the Tom Baker era. I was surfing around the channels they have here and found it. Um, it’s not bad really? I kinda like David Tennant more but I haven’t seen any of these ones so it’s cool.”

Emily put down the remote control and gave Madin more than a slither of her current attention, smiling brightly.

“What’s up?”

"Eh. Not much. Realised that I hadn't checked in how you were doing for a while. Um. How's it all going?" Madin shifted awkwardly as they asked.

“Pretty good,” Emily replied with a smile and gestured to the seat across for them. “Well, I mean, not good but not um. Anyway, I’ve been reading a lot, and meeting everyone and people are mostly nice? Sharon even helped me strip my bed when she threw water at me because she thought I was on fire.”

"Hang on, what the fuck? Why was she even in your room? She's like, twenty two!" Ohhhh, Madin was going to have some words with Sharon.

Emily tilted her head to the side momentarily in confusion, not sure why Sharon’s age mattered all that much. She’d just assumed due to the whole cat thing that finding her wandering was fairly standard.

“She’s a cat though.”

Madin was screaming internally, mostly because screaming externally wasn't ever helpful. "That's fucking bullshit. She's -- " fucked up and crazy and maybe she was a cat but -- "she can talk, hon. Even if she is fully a cat, she's a cat that's way the hell smarter than us and got more degrees and shit. She knows how messed up going into a sixteen year old's bedroom at night is." The moment the words left their mouth they heard how bad that sounded. "She didn't um. She didn't try anything, did she?"

“Madin, she’s a cat,” Emily repeated with a wide eyed look. “She wouldn't see me like that, I’m not a cat.”

It wasn’t that she didn’t understand what Madin was saying, and had it been anyone else she might have been concerned but it was Catseye.

“But no, there was none of that

"No, she pretends that she's too much of a cat to do anything." Madin took a deep breath and tried bundle their feelings away for now. "Sorry. Can we discuss something else? Didn't mean to..."

“It’s nice that you care,” Emily responded with an easy smile. “I’ll make sure I lock my door from now on, it wasn’t really a thing back on the farm. I forget cities are weird.”

Madin was back to screaming internally. "Yes. Lock your door. People might steal your stuff and you can't trust... " They stopped. Emily was so sheltered. "Just lock your door at night, mate." How did you sleep around all those strangers with an unlocked door and no way to defend yourself? It was beyond belief.

Emily was her part was becoming seriously bewildered by Madin’s vehemence. They lived in a mansion, why would anyone living in a mansion need to steal anything? She’d been given a phone and a laptop on arrival, and bedding and she was pretty sure if she asked someone there was some kind of allowance, although she’d not asked. Her parents had set her up an account with a weekly allowance for anything that wasn’t already covered.

“I’ll be more careful. But um, are you sure you’re okay? Are the people here mean to you?”

Sigh. "You know I've been in jail, right? I met a lot of people there and some of them were... Look, you have google. Lock your fucking door at night, okay?"

“Ok?”

Emily could tell it was important to Madin that she keep herself save, and for them she’d do it. They’d been more than helpful even while she floundered about trying to figure out just how to manage all of this.

“I’m okay though, yeah? I’m um, reading a lot which is kinda cool.”

"Thanks dude. I'm sorry for. Yeah." Madin tried to get the rest of their feelings back in the box, only partially succeeding. "You got the hang of the bus to New York yet? And your licence? You're a farm kid, so I know you can drive already. "

Emily shrugged, it was no worries as far as she was concerned, they’d only been looking out for her after all. She pushed the stop button on the remote control and nodded to the door.

“I got the learners thing I think? The one where you can’t drive in the city but you can drive during the day but I don’t know why anyone would want to drive in New York, that’s just crazy talk.”

"Right? Anyway, you're driving, I'm paying for the fancy coffee."

Oh, this was adorable. Two extremes - Madin with their intense paranoia and Emily with her wide-eyed innocence - and totally failing to meet in the middle. ;) Great job, you two!
