Mel and Star - Flower Power (Backdated)
Jun. 17th, 2024 08:09 pmBackdated to June 17 Shatterstar comes across Mel with a flower display and asks her about it.
Mel was more plant than girl as she balanced her armful, making her way towards her suite. One perk of her job was that they let her take home any arrangements that didn’t get used, so her room and her siblings’ rooms were always covered in flowers.
The downside of said flowers was that they totally obscured her vision, and as she stumbled down the hall she bumped into someone.
“Omigosh, so sorry! I can barely see past all these.” Mel said, shifting a few down onto the ground so she could apologize properly. “Oh, hi Shatterstar. How’re ya doing?”
Shatterstar didn't mind being bumped into anymore, mostly because he and Mel now had a sort of warrior's bond from decidedly evading talking about their experience in Murderworld. "Okay." He looked at the rainbow display of flowers, bright and beautiful. "Those look very gay."
She choked on a laugh. Anyone else and she would’ve taken it differently, but it was Shatterstar. “Yeah, I think they’re leftover from a Pride event actually. We’ve done a few of those so far this month.”
"You work with flowers?" He asked curiously. He didn't actually know much about Mel, let alone her job. But if she worked with flowers maybe she could be helpful...
“Yep! Well, I’m mostly in the office doin’ paperwork an’ coffee runs, but if they’re short on event staff I help with the flowers as well.” And she was getting pretty damm good at it too.
"Oh. So you don't actually know about flowers," Shatterstar said in clear disappointment. He had hoped he had found someone he could learn from- so that he could understand the things Rictor cared about more.
“I wouldn’t say I’m an expert or anything, but I’ve picked up plenty,” Mel said. She rifled through her various arrangements and presented one. “I did this one, fer example. An’ you do kinda have t’know stuff at the office to make sure the orders go out right.” Never again would she mistake larkspurs and delphiniums for each other.
"I want to understand about them," he said, looking at the arrangement Mel did. It looked very nice. "Rictor likes flowers." And if it mattered to Rictor, it mattered to him.
Ohhh. “An’ you like Rictor a lot, huh.”
"He's my best friend."
“Mhm,” Mel hummed. They would make a cute couple, she thought. “You interested in growin’ flowers or jus’ knowin’ stuff about them? Cause I can get some of the catalogs we use at work if you wanna go through ‘em.”
Shatterstar's eyes widened at the idea. He's never tried growing anything before- a small apartment, then a juice cell, then a hospital room had not been the best spaces to start gardening. He could grow useful plants, not just flowers. And he could ask Rictor to help him. "Growing. Definitely growing."
“Hm, I’ll tell ya what, I can probably get ya some boxes that ya can plant stuff in fer yer suite, or ya might be able t’get a little space in the greenhouse they’re fixin’ up on the grounds.” Mel offered. They definitely had stuff like that that she could snag from her job. “You jus’ pick out what you’d like t’grow an’ I can help ya get started?”
"The greenhouse, maybe," Shatterstar agreed, since he was pretty sure Rictor had space there and it would be a perfect excuse to spend time together. The concept that he didn't need excuses to spend time with Rictor didn't occur to him. "And something yellow." He liked yellow. It made him think of Rictor, since it was sunny like him. "Whatever is a moderate difficulty to cultivate."
Mel nodded. Delphiniums or dahlias maybe. An orchid if he really wanted a challenge. “I’ll see what I can do then.”
"Yes. Thank you."
