Paige wakes Jono in the middle of the night for some comfort after a harrowing week.

It had been a long drive home. Fourteen hours in a car with her siblings when they were all exhausted after a week at home had given Paige more family time than she had been expecting for the whole summer. They finally parked in the mansion garage late into the night and Paige split off from the group for her room as soon as she grabbed her bag. They could all check in together in the morning. Right now, they could all use some space.

Paige dropped her bag in her room, took a moment to take everything in again, then decided she was still too high strung to sleep. Knowing at least one person who would likely still be awake at this hour, she walked down the hallways to the familiar door covered in band posters. Trying not to wake any of the neighbors up, she knocked and called Jono’s name softly.

Jono blinked awake slowly and then sat up fast when he heard Paige's voice outside his door. He wasn't exactly presentable in an old pair of boxers and a tshirt with a hole in it, but if she was looking for him at this hour he couldn't be picky.

He rushed to the door and opened it, looking at her through tired eyes. ”Paige? Are you okay?”

Paige looked around for a second before realizing what had happened. “You’ve been working on your telepathy! Nice!” His voice was nice, even if she was a little surprised to hear his accent. She knew he was British, but hearing his voice made it easier to retain that information.

Looking over Jono, it was easy to see he wasn’t quite awake. “I’m ok. Sorry if I woke you, we just got back.” She really needed to let him get a full night’s sleep one of these days.

”Angel…..you don’t have to lie to me." Jono said gently, ushering her inside. "Is your sister okay?”

Paige’s face grew red at the nickname for some reason. “Yeah. I mean, as ok as she can be.” The weight of the past week finally fell onto her shoulders. “We got her out of the group and away from the older guy but…we still had to leave her at home and I don’t think any of us are really satisfied with that after she’s already run away once without Mama telling us but there wasn’t really a better solution.”

”I know your youngest siblings wouldn’t like it- but I really want to fight your mum.” Jono thought, protective over these children he’d only sort of heard about. ”Are you looking to spend the night here?”

“If you don’t mind.” She gave an awkward smile. “Didn’t want to be on my own but I need some time away from my siblings.”

Jono gave her a glance over and then pulled a t-shirt and a pair of joggers out of his drawers and handed them to her. ”Bathroom’s yours and then we can get settled in bed?”

Paige took the clothes, then threw her arms around him in a hug. “Thank you.” She held him tight enough that it made the bruise on her shoulder throb, causing her to wince and pull away. “I’ll go get changed.”

Jono froze for a second when she hugged him before he remembered to hug her back. When she winced he frowned and grabbed onto her arms. ”I thought you said you were okay? Are you hurt? Please tell me that overprotective brother you’re always complaining about killed whoever hurt you.”

“I’m fine, it’s just a bruise. Didn’t focus hard enough on what I was transforming into and didn’t turn out quite bulletproof. It’s fine, we’re all fine.” Paige rubbed at her shoulder, before lifting up her sleeve. “See? Just a bruise.”

”Someone shot you?!” Jono asked, chest growing warm as he got upset. ”Paige that’s insane.”

Paige fidgeted uncomfortably under the attention she hadn’t received at home. “Yeah but I turned into metal. No one else got hurt and I’m not even hurt that badly. It’s fine.”

”It’s not fine. Someone hurt you. It hit Jono suddenly that Paige’s mother probably hadn’t said anything. One day he really was going to fight that bitch. You fucking matter, Paige. You getting hurt is a big deal and I’m frankly pissed that you’ve been made to feel like it isn’t.”

She pulled him into another hug, partially to hide her face and partially to show him how much she appreciated him. “Thank you for the concern, but there’s nothing we can do about it now and I’m really tired and I bet you are too. We can talk more in the morning?”

”Yeah of course. Go get changed and I’ll try to calm down.”

Paige pulled back a bit hesitantly. “Are you ok? You’re not…mad at me, are you?” The last phone conversation they had came to mind.

”Just worried.” Jono promised. ”Go get comfortable and we’ll go to bed.”

Paige nodded and ducked into the bathroom to change.

When Paige returned, Jono shut off the light and pulled her against his chest, ignoring his anxiety at having her so close. She'd hugged him twice so far, she clearly wanted the physical contact. "Go to sleep. I'll still be here in the morning."

~~~
Paige didn’t exactly sleep peacefully, but it was the most restful she had slept since finding out Joelle was missing. Having a friend within arms reach all night helped to ward off the dreams she had been having about her and her family getting hurt. It was nice.
Still, Paige didn’t sleep very late and managed to wake up before Jono did. Awareness came to her slowly and she eventually noticed that her face was pressed into Jono’s shoulder, with his arms wrapped around her, cradling her like she needed to be protected. Considering Jono was still nervous about letting her hug him, it was a surprising way to wake up, if a comforting one. Jono was radiating warmth from his chest and it was nice. Almost made Paige want to curl up and go back to sleep. Shutting her eyes again, she cuddled closer.
Jono blinked awake when Paige snuggled closer, he shook his head slightly and then brought a hand to her hair, gently detangling it before scratching her scalp, cradling her close. "Morning."
“Mornin’,” Paige mumbled into his shoulder. The head rub felt good. Why didn’t they cuddle like this more often?
"How's your shoulder?" Jono asked. He'd slept lightly, waking up every time Paige moved or made a noise in her sleep. "I could go venture out for an ice pack if you need one."
“It’s fine. You’re warm so that’s helping.” And she didn’t want to move just yet.
Jono couldn't help but let a twinge of amusement touch his response. "I'll be sure to let my body image issues know that you think the fire's pleasant. It might even help."
“Good, because it’s nice and I like it. Your voice is nice, too. Forgot to tell you last night.” Paige sighed contentedly.
Jono's cheeks darkened and he was glad for the low light in the room and Paige's face pressed into his shoulder so she wouldn't see it. "Thanks....you sleep alright? You seemed a bit restless..."
“Better than I have been. Thanks for letting me stay. I really appreciate it.”
"How many times do I have to tell you that you're always welcome here before you believe it?" Jono rolled his eyes. "Besides, you told your mum we're dating, what kind of boyfriend would I be if I didn't let you stay?"
Paige turned bright red. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry about that, Mama was lecturing me and I got mad and didn’t think. I shouldn’t have told her that.”
"Hey, I already gave you a ring." He teased. "And like I told you, there are much worse things than being considered a matching set with you. If it gets your mum off your back, consider me game for whatever."
“Promise I’ll ask you next time before making stuff up about you. And that I’ll only do it to my Mama.”
"Paige, I'm not upset. I was surprised, but not upset. Promise." Jono soothed gently. "And I already have experience being used to piss off judgmental parents. I'm practically an expert. I'd go to Kentucky with you if you asked just to sell it."
“Maybe for Christmas…” Paige trailed off as she fell back asleep.
"Yes Ma'am." Jono said fondly, rubbing her back while she fell asleep. Maybe when she woke up she'd be ready to talk, although now he could answer in real time which....might be a problem since she didn't seem to like his plan of 'fight Mrs. Guthrie.'
