Jay & Mel | Crush
Sep. 9th, 2024 06:55 pmMel spills the beans about her newest romantic infactuation.
Mel let herself into her brothers’ suite, calling out “Jay!! I got takeout!” She’d been in a better mood than usual lately, all things considered, and wanted to spread the love.
Jay looked at Mel suspiciously. Either she was trying to hide being upset or there was some boy she was mooning over. "So who is it?" he asked.
“I have no idea what yer talkin’ ‘bout,” she said, putting her bag of delicious rice bowls on the kitchen counter. Her face betrayed otherwise, flushing pink. “How was work today?”
"A headache of numbers," Jay said dismissively, coming to get a rice bowl. Takeout was a wonderful thing about living here. "Now tell me whose got you so tickled pink and airy."
“You know ‘em,” Mel sighed and practically swooned on to the couch dramatically. There was no hiding these things from Jay, and she’d been bursting to tell someone. “It ain’t nothin’ official yet, but we’ve been doing stuff together an’ it’s been really nice.” She made herself blush just thinking about it. “They’re so cute an’ funny an’ nice, and they’re passionate about so many things.”
Jay had to admit that even though he knew most of the mansion residents by sight now, he didn't actually know many of them, especially the ones more Mel's age. He wasn't sure who it could be. Madin maybe... But it couldn't be, right? Didn't fit the description from what Jay knew of them. Plus he was pretty sure they didn't like girls from that joke they had made to him some months ago.
She stopped her monologuing long enough to eat a few bites, still with a sappy smile on her face. “I think it could be real good Jay…. if I don’t manage to mess it up like I do.” Mel frowned and picked at her bowl.
"I don't know if you messed up any of those before," Jay said with the confidence only a big brother could have. Of course it was never Mel's fault.
“Uh huh,” was the response to that, not very convinced. “I dunno if Madin really likes me like that though. They could jus’ be bein’ friendly like.” Holding hands, going out to do things together, kisses on cheeks… all things that pals could do.
"Madin as in lives here Madin?" Jay asked, slightly incredously. "That's who you've got a likin' to?" He wasn't sure how he felt about Mel dating anyone else who lived here.
“That’s the one,” she said, eyeing Jay for reaction.
"You sure you want to be datin' someone ya live with?"
Mel shrugged. “S’a big house Joshie. It wouldn’t be too bad if things go awry.” And not to mention convenient if they didn’t.
"Don't you Joshie me," he said, shoving her slightly. "All I'm sayin' is..." Well, he didn't think it was a good idea. "I'm just thinkin' that you don't gotta date people who know all the people you know up here."
“I’m friends with people who don’t live here,” Mel grumbled. She was very social, thank you very much. “An’ Sam and Paigey’re doin’ jus’ fine seeing people who do.” Well, Paige wasn’t technically dating Jono, but yknow.
"They ain't unlucky charms," Jay replied automatically, before immediately trying to backtrack. "I'm just saying that when it comes to datin', I mean. You don't have the greatest luck with it, is all."
“Yeah yeah, I’m cursed t’die alone, I know,” she pouted, blowing out a puff of air dejectedly. Mel leaned over onto Jay’s shoulder. “Yer welcome to say ‘I told ya so’ if it goes to shit.”
"I'd do that were in welcome to it or not," Jay said before pausing. "Ya really like 'em?"
“Yeah, I think I do.” They made her feel all glowy inside, and Mel couldn’t get enough of it.
"Take it slow this time?" Jay suggested
She poked at her food. “M’trying. I ain’t even told Madin I like ‘em yet. Yer the first t’know.”
Now that was a surprise. Jay had always thought Mel told the people she liked right away. Whirlwind romance and all that. But she was more grown up now. "I think they could be good for you," he said, pulling her in for a side hug before stealing a bite from her bowl.
“Hey!” Mel protested with faux outrage, despite leaning onto Jay more. She eyed his bowl while formulating her revenge. “Ya think so?”
"Give ya someone to argue with. And you might be good for 'em too."
Mel snorted. Now probably wasn’t the moment to mention they’d already gotten into a fight in a restaurant. “Maybe.” Part of her worried she might be worse for Madin, all things considered.
"So..." Jay began to ask, teasing. "Ya want me, Paigey, or Sam to give them the shovel talk?"
“Save all that fer when we’re actually datin’,” Mel groaned, albeit affectionately. “I don’t need yall scarin’ poor Madin off.”
