Kane & Gaia | Ground Rules
Oct. 1st, 2024 08:47 pmBefore Gaia is released, Kane swings by the Chapel to make an offer.
The girl, Gaia as she’d told them, sat criss cross on the bed in a pair of hand me down clothes scrounged from around the mansion. She eyed her newest visitor with an air of curiosity. This was not one of her regulars. “Hello.”
"Good morning. I'm Garrison Kane." He said as he sat down across from her on a chair. Hr reached into the bag he'd brought him with and put two takeout containers on the bed. "This is fish and chips from a local place I think very highly of. I thought you might like something different. There's cutlery in the bag."
Pulling one container closer to her, Gaia regarded the bag for a moment before settling on a fork. She poked at the different things in the box, eventually deciding on what she could only assume was a “chip”. It was good, as far as food went. She looked up at Garrison with an expression that read “Well, get on with it.”
"Is that ok? I can get you something else?" He said, absolutely relaxed.
“It is….” she searched for a more vivid descriptor, before giving up. “It is okay.”
Some of her curiosity turned to suspicion. When they stayed after food there was usually questions of a more personal variety.
"Good. They deliver to the mansion if you decide you want to have it again sometime." He'd flipped open his own box and took a couple of minutes to demolish one of the two pieces of fish. "So, I'm told that you're ready to leave quarentine. Have people talked to you about your options yet?".
Gaia had watched him tear through his food with a sort of morbid fascination, and now turned to poking her own fish delicately. “He said I would not be bound, that I could be…. welcomed.”
"I can't guarantee welcomed - people tend to remember an introduction that involves a beatdown. But this place is a sanctuary for mutants, like yourself. As long as you're willing to live by our rules, there is a place here for you if you want it." Kane shrugged. "The docs and the science types have said you're cleared to leave quarantine later today. If you'd rather leave at that point, that's your choice to make."
She seemed to consider this for a moment, and consider him. Grey eyes scanned him as if looking for something in particular, and came back satisfied. “And if I wish to stay at your sanctuary? Rules?”
"They're pretty straightfoward. Respect your fellow denizens, no using your powers on anyone without consent, and if you plan to stay, you'll be required to train with your powers to ensure that you can control them. We understand accidents happen from time to time but controlling them is both extremely important and your responsibility." Kane said with a nod. "The rest are mostly details - security protocols, access to different areas of the mansion, how to label any food you particularly want so it isn't immediately eaten by someone else... that sort of stuff."
Another pause, before Gaia asked, “And what happens if these ‘rules’ are not followed?” Not quite a challenge, but a test all the same.
"What would you do if you offered someone to be a guest and they abused your trust?" Kane was an affable type. He had a quick grin and a disarming manner. But every so often, the steel behind his eyes flashed for a moment. "This is meant to be a safe place. If you make it unsafe, you'll need to find somewhere else to go."
“Hm.. okay.” She took a small bite of the fish as she said so, seeming pleased enough with it. “And this place is truly one of safety?”
"Depends who you ask. There isn't a place with better security and protection than the mansion. But-" Kane sighed. "Because of the numbers of mutants here, it draws a lot more attention than a quiet bacholar apartment in Denver."
This was as Gaia suspected. Grand promises of complete safekeeping were not to be believed. After all, had she herself not been drawn here? "Some things cannot be prevented," was said with the idea of a shrug.
"I keep saying that's what the doormat should say instead of 'welcome' but I keep getting outvoted." Kane said wryly. He reached into his jacket pocket and brought out a large bulky envolpe, folded in half. He tossed it down on the bed next to her. "Inside is an Xavier phone. Please keep it with you when you leave the mansion. There's a room assignment, keycard for the locks, info for an initial DR evaluation, and default passwords for the laptop in the room. Once you sign in for the first time, it will have an onboarding program that will give you maps, info about the mansion and the facilities, a place to add dietary rescrictions and order any specific supplies... med lab has already signed off on your physical so at least you get to avoid the ackward paper gown two-step for this year, eh?"
She eyed the envelope with no small amount of suspicion. “So I have.. passed?”
"This wasn't a test. Or an interview." Kane said, leaning forward with his elbows braced on his knees. "This was always your choice."
Choice. Every moment was a choice, but when was the last time she had truly been making such large ones?
"Well. Let us hope it is the right one." For whom she didn't clarify.
