Alani finds Inez at the X-Factor office and takes her out to lunch.
Alani strolled through the X-Factor Investigations office with a calm confidence as if she did this on the daily. Knocking lightly on Inez's desk, she flashed a smile and raised a brow when blue eyes looked up at her. "You got lunch plans for today?"
Those eyes smiled up at Alani, almost as wide as the actual smile that graced her lips. "I reckon I do now," she said, curving said lips into a small smirk as she got to her feet. "Y'must've read my mind, or heard my stomach growing," she confessed, patting her belly as she stepped out from her desk and pushed her chair into place before coming out around to join Alani.
"Have anything particular in mind?" she asked as she grabbed her hat and playfully put it on Alani's head.
There was a slight sputter, flush rising in Alani's cheeks as she rolled her eyes at the blonde. "Watch out, Inez, I might think I look very good in this and might keep it." She traced the brim of the hat briefly before placing it back onto Inez's head. She tucked a few stray strands back. "I mean, damn if you don't look amazing in it. I'd hate to leave you hatless."
"There's apparently a birria truck at the edge of the district if you don't mind a little walk? Or there's always Betty's? Either of those speak to you?"
"So you'd like me t'leave the hat on... duly noted," she replied, though her own cheeks had a slightly rosier hue to them after the brushing back of her hair.
"Mm, I don't mind a lil' walkin', would mean spendin' more time with you and that's always a plus, and would be an excuse t'eat more too," Inez added with a chuckle. "Birria truck it is. Lead the way, darlin'." She interlaced her arm with Alani's as they headed for the exit.
Alani laughed, bumping her shoulder against Inez’s as they walked, smile still curling the edges of her lips. “Well, only if you wanna keep the hat on, of course. Aaaaand I was hoping you would vote truck, not only is it good food but I thought maybe you could use a break. What’s better than a nice lunch out? With a cute lady.” The comment was obviously for the woman on her arm.
“If I can say?”
"Y'can do more than say," she confirmed, playfully bumping her back as they made there way towards their destination. "And I agree, nothin' wrong with eatin' out every now and then," Inez added, this time not intending the double entendre - Guide's honour - but blushing profusely once she realized what she'd said. "Er... y-yeah, it's been a quiet day so I'm glad y'came around, hon. How's your day been goin'?" she asked in a - likely - vain attempt to deflect from her embarrassment.
A slight snort of a laugh escaped, one brow raising as she almost asked if she realized what she'd just said before she decided against it. "Too true, Inez, there's nothing wrong with eating out with a cute lady." Alani's grin turned coy. Another peal of laughter before she patted Inez's hand. "Sorry, I couldn't pass it up. I have had a pretty okay day as well, I'm going to a self-defense class at the Centre later. Is that fun? I actually don't know."
"S'alright, I wouldn't pass it up either," Inez mustered in reply, having been bested at her own game apparently, but not really minding at all. She jumped at the opportunity to segue into something else, especially something she could talk in depth about like self-defence. "Oh yeah, that's super fun, it's a great way t'not only learn about protectin' yourself but t'blow off some steam. An' if y'ever need a sparrin' partner, look no furher," she volunteered, before pausing to add, "or, y'know, look away," she added, twirling around with one hand on her hat to keep it into place as she laughed, having bounced back a little.
“Ah, good to know you like that kinda thing. I, uh, really am going as a teaching assistant, because I am actually very very bad at blowing off steam like that. Gimme a good workout any day, don't get me wrong. I'm just bad at punching. I mean, not really, I could totally hold my own if I needed to." Heat rose in her face as she tried to walk how silly she probably sounded. Slowly a brow rose. "Unless you'd like to teach me how to be better? I can always make time for that, too."
"Of course, I'd be honoured," she said with an earnest smile. "I dunno if I'm the best teacher or not, but I'd be more than willin' t'give it a shot if y'd like. Most of what I've learned has been through hands on, heh," Inez explained, chuckling at her own unintentional pun, "but I've taken tons of classes an' instruction, so I'm be down to try an' pass on what I can. 'Sides," she added, brushing her shoulder against Alani's in a light, playful bump, "I can always use a good workout m'self, an' it's more fun with someone else too."
"Well," she drew out the word cheekily, "I reckon I could definitely learn something new from you. And, to be entirely transparent, while that was one hundred percent flirting, I do also want to get better at self-defense, maybe even move onto hand-to-hand combat one day before the next time I really need it. You're also cuter than the other teachers." Her free hand tapped out a nervous beat on her thigh as they waited to cross. "I'm usually much better at flirting, but I- we live together, and I don't. . .don't wanna mess anything up if maybe we find out we don't vibe."
"Mhm, I hear ya," she said, smiling back at her while adjusting the brim of her hat to better block out the sun while looking at the other woman. "An' yeah, I can definitely help y'out with that, seriously. Not just from a flirtin' perspective, though I'm just as guilty as that m'self," Inez admitted, taking Alani's hand as the lights changed and they were able to cross the street. "I don't wanna mess anythin' up either, that would be... just, no, not somethin' I even wanna think about," she said.
"So... we can just keep on keepin' on, let things happen or not as they unfold, yeah? Go with the flow or somethin'." Words kinda failed her but she truly hoped that she was on the same page as Alani in that regard, and she changed a glance up at her from underneath her hat, biting her lip nervously.
There had been a brief start from Alani, when Inez’s hand had grazed hers before she instantly corrected and took her hand, interlacing their fingers lightly. Enough room if either wanted to shift their grip. "Well, then, I can happily report that I am very good at going with the flow," her grin was cheeky, though her eyes rarely strayed far from the blonde's as she spoke, "reckon it comes with the whole underwater adaptation"
"Aaaaand, if this is a date, I'm buying, just sayin'."
"Yer so cute when y'say stuff like reckon," Inez said, teasing a little bit but being mostly serious. The fact that she found Alani adorable regardless probably had something to do with that. "An' if that means you're payin' then heck yeah it's a date," she added, squeezing her hand just a little. "See, look at me, goin' with that whole flow thing. Maybe there's some hope for me after all," she chuckled.
“Always hope for you,” Alani flashed a smile, thumb gentle as she ran it over the back of Inez’s hand. “And I’m filing that away for later, just for you.”
