Paige and Jono attend her classmates’ Halloween party.

Paige stood by the front door of the mansion, waiting for Jono to join her. They were going into town today to try and thrift some Halloween costumes. Someone in her cohort had decided they needed to have a party, which meant Paige had to put in an appearance. So she’d have someone to talk to and so she wouldn’t look lonely, she invited Jono along. Her classmate had said they could bring a plus one. Well, they had said partners were welcome, but that was basically the same thing. Hopefully, they wouldn’t ask Jono too many questions.

Jono jogged down the stairs quickly to join her, shoving the light writer into his pocket. They were likely staying around DX to go shopping, but should they venture outside the mutant neighborhood it would be good to be prepared. “Ready to go?

“All set!” Paige readjusted her messenger bag and led the way out the door. “There’s a thrift store not too far away that should be a good place to look. Scully and Mulder are pretty easy to put together, we just need some suits and I printed out some fake FBI badges we can clip on. We should probably grab something to bring to the party, too, but I can take care of that.”

Whatever you say Angel….when’s the party again?” Jono asked as he walked beside her, hands shoved nonchalantly into his pockets.

“…Tomorrow,” she grimaced. “Time got away from me, with school and all. But it should be fine.”

"The party is tomorrow and we're just now getting costumes? The costumes you decided on this morning?"

Paige was the most Type A person he had ever met, the state of her bedroom aside, how had this happened?

“My classmates decided we should do this a week and a half ago, and I got busy with midterms.” She had also forgotten it was a costume party until people started texting what they were wearing in the group chat. It was fine. They’d be fine. “Don’t worry, we’ll find something that works.”

"I think I still have the suit I'd wear to funerals if I need it?" Jono said. "Or is that too morbid even for Samhain?"

“That’s perfect!” Paige paused at the unfamiliar word. “What’s Sow-en? Is that like a British thing?”

"It's the Gaelic seasonal festival that serves as the cultural precursor to Halloween once paired with Christian festivals like All Souls Day." Jono said, very quickly as though this was common knowledge even though he knew damn well it was not.

“Oh, interesting.” Stuff like that wasn’t really Paige’s cup of tea, but it was cool Jono knew that. “Anyway, since you’re all set, you can help me find a suit and a decent wig at the Spirit Halloween.”

"The fuck is a Spirit Halloween?"

—————————————————————

Paige readjusted the cheap red wig on her head again. It definitely wasn’t going to last the night if it kept annoying her this badly. No one said Spirit Halloween was quality. At least they had found a decently 90s suit at the thrift store.

“Hope you’re ready to meet my cohort. They were really excited for tonight.”

"Yeah. Is there anything you told them about me that I should be prepared for? Like the idea that we're dating??" He asked, eyebrow raised. He was teasing...mostly.

“I did not tell them that we’re dating,” Paige said truthfully. She hadn’t really told them much about Jono at all aside from that he was coming to the party. “I have no idea what they’re going to ask you, though. Probably won’t be as bad as Jeb?”

At least with her family, Paige knew what to expect. Her classmates were a different beast. After a semester and a half, she should probably know them better, but trying to keep her mutation and where she lived quiet made that difficult.

Jeb wasn’t bad, he’s just fifteen.” Jono said immediately, somewhat defensive of Paige’s kid brother. “Are you ready to go in? I’ve got my light writer and I’m ready for awkward socializing.

“Ready if you are,” Paige said, adjusting her wig one last time. She reached out and knocked on the door.

————————————————————————
Someone had asked Jono what he was reading. That had been a mistake. That mistake had been made about seven minutes ago when he started typing at length about early Gaelic healing waters and transitional era syncretism.
Maybe the costume Paige had picked for him accurate.

Paige wandered over from the kitchen, wig long gone. It was itchy, so she couldn’t really complain. Seeing Jono on the couch, she came up behind him and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. Her head was feeling fuzzy and light, so she let it drop onto her arms next to Jono’s face. “Whatcha talkin’ ‘bout over here?”

Jono leaned back into Paige's space and tapped his head into hers gently. He cut himself off and quickly typed. "Oh hey Angel, they were asking me what I've been reading about so I was telling them about that book on Irish holy wells and faerie faith I've been reading....have you had water tonight?"

He turned his head slightly to try to look at her, difficult with how close they were. He thought to her, "Also, you could have told me that this was a party for cohort members and their partners- I've been fielding questions about our relationship half the night."

“Water….” She had had water, that sounded right. Probably before that second beer. “Yeah probably.”

Paige did her best to telepathically tell Jono that she hadn’t known that she was the only single person there and they had said she was welcome to bring someone without specifying it had to be a partner, but apparently alcohol made that difficult, too. Instead, she wound up staring at Jono’s face really hard.

"That wasn't very convincing darling, can you go get a glass of water please?" He typed, fixing her with his best puppy dog eyes. Drunk Paige was new- and very dissimilar from sober Paige. But hopefully this still worked.

“Yeah ok.” Paige squeezed Jono tight in a hug before untangling herself and stumbling off to the kitchen to find a water bottle.

Jono attempted to return to his conversation when Paige went off to get water, but his eyes followed after her and he didn't like how drunk she was. He made quick apologies to the group before shoving the light writer into his pocket and following after Paige. "Okay Paige- I really think it's time I took you home. You're very drunk."

Paige grabbed a water bottle from the pack on the counter. “No ‘m not. I only had two.” Sure, she was tipsy but she wasn’t drunk….probably.

"You're stumbling all over, Angel. Come on- let's get you home before one of your siblings kills me for being negligent or something." Ah.....this was going to be a fight. He'd never won one of those against Paige before.

“Yeah, ok. Lemme get my stuff.” He was right, they should get home before her siblings could say anything. She weaved her way out of the kitchen, said goodbye to her cohort, and grabbed her bag by the door.

Jono grabbed her wig from the snack table where she'd tried (rather unsuccessfully) to hide it behind a snack bowl, and then followed her out the door. As they walked, and she swayed, he reached over to take her hand, trying to steady her. "Careful love. Can't have you getting injured before we get to the subway station, can we?"

Paige put her had in his and tried to lean against him while also walking down the street. He was so nice and she didn’t understand why no one else could see that and it was really cute the way he gave her nicknames all the time like love and Angel and-
Oh.
Oh.
Oh no.

Why did Sam always have be right about everything? And why did he have to know she had feelings for Jono before she even did? Paige tried to straighten up and walk on her own. “Thanks, I got it.”

Jono's brow furrowed. "Are you alright?....Did I say something wrong?"

“No, yer jus’…really nice.” Ok, maybe she was more drunk than she thought. “Hey, have you ever been trick-or-treating? Is that a thing over there?” Smooth change of topic.

"No, I have never been trick-or-treating. But from what I've heard I'm a bit old for it now.....Why don't we pop by a bodega and get you something non-alcoholic to drink and maybe a snack? That should do you some good."

Paige’s eyes got big. “Never? That’s so sad. Trick-or-treating is like…” She searched for a word, but nothing was coming to her. “…the best. We should go, you get free candy! And you’re already in costume!” She swayed back into his reach again, only kind of on purpose. She was starting to miss the feeling of his arms around her.

"I can't eat candy, darling." Jono tried patiently, pulling her closer again and then switching their position on the sidewalk so that he could be sure she wouldn't sway into traffic. "I think I see an open bodega up ahead, I'm getting you a drink."

“….oh. Right.” She’d have to find a way for Jono to experience Halloween. “I don’t need another drink, thanks.”

"A gatorade or something like that. You'll want the electrolytes. Trust me- I used to get pissed nearly every weekend back in England." He said, nudging her softly with his shoulder. "A snack might also help, I didn't see you eat much at the party."

Right on cue, Paige’s stomach growled. “Ok yeah food and Gatorade it is.” For some reason, greasy fast food sounded amazing right now.

Jono led her to the bodega and ordered her a sandwich and searched for a gatorade flavor that he knew Paige liked, he didn't see her favorite flavor but noticed a similar flavor in Pedialyte and grabbed that too. He checked out, with some help from his light writer, and then presented her with the food, eyes crinkling in a smile. "Ta-da."

Paige grabbed the sandwich and took a bite before looking at the drink Jono handed her. “Pedialyte? Isn’t that for babies? Oh, and thank you for the sandwich.” Jono was so good to her. She should tell him that more often.

"They didn't have the gatorade you like, so I got you this instead." Jono said, rolling his eyes fondly. When Paige leaned into his space next he couldn't resist and bumped his nose against hers. "Besides, I think half your cohort thinks you're my baby."

Completely on instinct, Paige leaned in and kissed Jono’s cheek. “Guess that’s not so bad.” She took the bottle and started to drink it.

“Ok, yeah that’s not so bad.” She was feeling steadier on her feet now that she had some food in her stomach. That didn’t stop her from leaning into Jono’s side. “Take me home?”

Jono froze. "Paige, you're drunk. I'll take you to your room and say goodnight. Okay?"

“Yeah, alright!” Cuddling up next to Jono sounded great after a night out. She pressed herself into Jono’s side and started walking for the subway station.

—————————————————————————

Jono stood outside of Paige's suite and inwardly sighed. When he had asked Paige for the key she had giggled and told him it was in her pocket, without offering to reach into said pocket to pull it out, and her entire weight was being supported by him as he tried to knock on the door, loud enough that Melody would hear but not so loud as to wake up the other inhabitants of the hall.
It had been a very long walk back to the mansion.

The door was opened by Mel, who was still in her costume, if it could be considered a costume with the small amount of fabric used. A bit sinful considering she was an angel, white wings and a halo adorned.

Eyes took in the situation, and she sighed. “What happened?”

“Mels!” Paige said a bit too loudly, swaying in Jono’s arms. “Where’s the rest of your costume?”

"I believe she belongs to you?" Jono said sardonically, wrapping his arm tighter around Paige's waist in an effort to keep her upright. "She only had two beers, but is nonetheless very drunk, and I am trying to deliver her home where she can sleep and wake up hungover in peace."

Mel rubbed her temple. She hadn’t had nearly enough to drink for this. “At least it was only beer. Why are y’all both in suits?”

“We’re in the FBI.” Paige tried to be serious, but broke down into giggles almost immediately. “We’re looking for aliens!”

"We're dressed as Mulder and Scully from the X-Files." Jono supplied. "Paige and I have been watching the show together...could I take her inside now please?"

Paige’s eyes got big as she remembered that her room was no longer up to Jono’s standards of tidiness. “It’s ok, we can stay in Jono’s room tonight. Right, Jono?” Also meant extra time to cuddle up with him.

Eyes narrowed, Mel said, “No ya ain’t, c’mon Paigey, let’s get some water in ya.” She attempted to pull her sister into the suite.

"She was upset with me until a moment ago because I made her drink a pedialyte. She's had plenty of fluids- but an aspirin might be a good idea." Jono told Mel, trying and failing to pretend that he hadn't gone stiff as soon as Paige tried to talk her way into his room. "Angel, I really think you should stay in your own room. You're drunk, Paige- I can come check on you in the morning if you really want me to."

Paige did not let go of Jono’s arm, so he was pulled in the door as well. Once they were inside, she tried to wiggle ungracefully out of Mel’s grip to cling to Jono again. “Oooooorrr, you could just stay here, problem solved, g’night, Mel!” She tried to tug Jono toward her room, but leaned on him more than actually moved.

“Nope.” She steered Paige, and by extension Jono, towards the kitchen. There she pulled out a glass and filled it at the sink. “Here,” she said, placing it in front of Paige along with an aspirin. “Drink.”

Paige sighed. “But I’ve already had so much water. Jono made me drink a bunch.”

"And now you're having more. Drink." He said, looking at her pointedly. "And I am putting you to bed and then going back to my bed. It physically pains me to say it, but your sister is right. I shouldn't stay."

Paige must be sobering up because she finally had a clear thought. “Then I’m not going to drink the water.” Maybe it was childish, but she really didn’t want him to leave.

Mel put her hands on her hips and gave Paige her best disapproving Sam look, something that was slightly mitigated by her attire. “Paige Elizabeth. Yer drinkin’ that one way or another. Either ya do now or I’ll get one of th’ boys t’give ya a talkin’ to.”

“Yer not the boss of me,” Paige said defiantly, crossing her arms. “Jono can stay if I want him to.”

Jono thought for a moment. "I will personally walk you over to Jay if you don't drink that water. It's for your own good, Angel. We talked about this on the walk over. We're trying to save you from a hangover in the morning.....what if I stay to watch an episode of the X-Files with you and then go back to my room? Would you drink the water then?"

Paige pouted at him for taking Mel’s side, but she did take a small sip of the water.

"Thank you, darling." Jono sighed. "Now, will you finish the rest of the water so that I can watch an episode of the X-Files with you and then we can go to bed....separately?"

Mel took off her halo and used it to bonk both of them on the head. “Yes. Separately.” It was like listening to an old married couple, good lord. “Now I’m gonna go take a shower, so you better be in bed by the time I get out, y’hear?”

Paige stuck her tongue out at Mel and leaned into Jono’s side.

“So X-Files?” Maybe if she got Jono to sit still for long enough, he wouldn’t want to move to his room. Her bed was very comfy.

"X-Files." Jono confirmed. Then after a moment. "One episode, then I go back to my room."

“Deal.” Paige chugged the rest of the water and led Jono over to her room. After a bit of shuffling things around, they both fit on her bed comfortably. Laying on top of Jono so he couldn’t leave was on purpose, but passing out 5 minutes later was not. She was warm and comfortable and still kind of buzzed, making it easy to shut her eyes and drift off as Mulder monologues about the case he had found.

Jono wanted to get up, but he couldn't bring himself to wake Paige. He just hoped that Mel wouldn't kill him in his sleep as he brushed Paige's hair out of her face before slowly moving to get more comfortable as he settled in for the long haul.
