Backdated Scott shows Gaia around the mansion.
They’d finally let her out of that forsaken room. There were promises of safety and help, and ill-disguised threats of retribution if she stepped out of their lines. It was easier to believe the latter.
If the grandeur of the mansion was overwhelming to Gaia, she made no move to show it, face expressionless as per usual. The only clue to her curiosity towards this outside world was how her eyes darted around, cataloguing. They kept coming back to the man they’d left her with. He was to “give her a tour”, whatever that meant.
There was something about the first time you really got to look at the mansion, the size of it, the scale and grandeur of the house that you started to forget when you'd been living there for a while. It was why Scott enjoyed giving the tour so much, Most of the arrivals at the mansion looked less...skittish than this new girl but, it was always nervewrecking, one way or the other.
"So, Gaia right? Nice to meet you, I'm Scott, I've probably lived here the longest and you know, somehow wound up in charge so I'll be your tour guide. I figured we can start in the kitchen and work our way up, maybe grab a drink or snack while we're in there if you want?"
The pink haired girl nodded slightly. That would be fine. The kitchen. “This place is very young then?”
"A few decades now, it used to be a family home, but when the Professor started his mission he needed a place for us all to live, things just spiralled out from there." A smile touched Scott's lips as he reached out to swing the door to the kitchen open with one hand, nodding for Gaia to head in. "It didn't used to be this crowded though, there were just 5 of us back when everything started, but places like this, they were built to house so many more."
She took in the countertops and appliances, mystified. A hand ran over smooth granite, cold to the touch. So this was a kitchen. “This mission you speak of, what is it?”
"Survival," Scott stopped by the kitchen island, a hip leaning against the counter as he turned to face Gaia. "When we opened up, we needed a safe place, somewhere to be ourselves, just about everyone out there seemed to want to hurt us, or use us. So he gave us a place of safety from where we could try to change the world."
Gaia considered his words, just as she considered the faucet at the sink. She turned the handle and watched as water poured into the basin. On. Off. On. Off. "So many in one place has also made a target?" was asked, seeking confirmation of what Kane had told her before.
"Once or twice," Scott allowed, leaning back against a counter as he tilted his head to the side staring at Gaia, "there are people out there who look at a concentration of mutants and don't like it, see us as a threat. We've been attacked a few times, but we've gotten pretty good at defending ourselves and well, where else can we find this amount of firepower to handle anything they throw at us. We've invaded military bases and alternate dimensions to get people back, we never leave anyone behind."
She stuck her hand under the water and watched it in fascination as it rolled off in rivulets, seemingly satisfied with his answer. The miracle of running water occupying her more thoroughly than the eminent threat of bigotry fueled violence.
A small smile touched the corner of Scott's lips as he reached up to grab a glass, sliding it across the counter towards Gaia. "You know, you're gonna really love the swimming pool out back."
The water continued to run as she turned towards Scott, head tilted slightly. “Swimming.. pool?”
There was no way he wasn't going to do this, he couldn't. A grin lit up the man's face as he took a step towards the back door, swinging it open with a nod, "This way, it's...the best part of the mansion, well second best."
Gaia followed dutifully, flicking off the tap, curious as to what mysteries were contained in this pool.
