Sam and Jay (and Jeb and Lewis)
Nov. 29th, 2024 11:39 amAll four Guthrie brothers get to spend time together, mostly by talking about Sam's boyfriend.
Lewis was squished between Sam and Jay on a loveseat that really wasn't really made for three people, with Jeb sitting cross-legged in a chair. All four Guthrie boys, a rare occasion. One to be savored.
"Man, your boyfriend is kinda lame," Jeb said to Sam, causing Jay to laugh.
“Literally not even a month ago you said your favorite subject was physics and you wanted to be a scientist and now that’s lame?” Sam said, rolling his eyes.
“He’s a nerd!” Jeb said, as if he hadn’t asked to see a big city comic book store while he was up north.
“Oh,” Sam laughed. “I see. We’re bein’ petty, huh?”
"Well, he is old," Lewis wrinkled his nose, speaking from where he was totally not snuggled into Jay's side. Being almost 13 he was too old for that, of course. He pushed his feet into Sam's leg. "Even compared to you."
"Hey now, Sam ain't all that old after all," Jay said, one arm around his youngest brother. "People even think he's cool up here I hear," he teased Sam.
Both Lewis and Jeb looked like they didn't believe him.
Sam stretched and wrapped an arm around Lewis’s shoulders, arm awkwardly overlapping with Jay’s, partly so he could ruffle the boy’s hair and partly so he could give some of the affection Lewis was clearly seeking. Jay had used to do the same thing at his age.
“Hey now, Clint is good to me and I actually unlax sometimes now thanks to him. And we all know I act about his age anyhow, so it ain’t a bad fit.” Sam laughed. “I wouldn’t say I’m cool, I just actually have friends here that weren’t made on a baseball team.”
"See, you ain't got your facts straight, bein' also lame," Jeb said to Jay after Sam confirmed his coolness was exaggerated.
"Jay's not lame, Jay don't listen to him," Lewis said, pretending to duck out of the way of Sam's hair ruffle to get more into it.
"I weren't going to."
"ANYWAY," Jeb said, clearly glad to not have to act as the responsible oldest brother. "Your Clint can't be doin' cool science if Jay works with him. Your job is way better, 's like you're Batman or The Question."
Jay was reminded of being Jeb's age and thinking everything Sam did was boring because it was Sam, the older sibling he had to listen to, who did it. Well, at least Sam was having his turn being the favorite.
“No he still does cool science, he even gets invited to guest lecture at colleges, he got to talk to Paigey’s physics class even.” Sam rolled his eyes. “Don’ go makin’ shit up about my job, I run background checks, file more paperwork than I can count, and occasionally go ask some questions… it really ain’t all that excitin’.”
Jeb's eyes lit up and he sat up a little. "Well if he's talkin' at Paige's classes... Maybe he ain't so bad."
Jay looked over Lewis's head at Sam, grinning at his brother conspiratorially. "Came around sooner'n me on him," he said. Sam should have known that connecting Clint to Paige would make Jeb think he was cool.
“What does that mean?” Lewis asked, frowning as he tilted his head back to look between his oldest brothers.
“It means, Sam teased. “That Jay used to think he was a serial killer. Jus’ cause he gave me a present.”
Lewis, ever the peace maker, tilted his head back to look sternly at Jay while Jeb, who found this hilarious, laughed.
"Now don't give me that look," Jay said, smiling. "I only thought that cause he gave Sam a pearl on a first date."
Lewis turned his look to Sam, though this one was more one of embarrassment for his brother. "That's weird."
“He’d been stuck in Florida for a work mission and we had to postpone our first date because of it and he found the pearl down there and gave it to me! It was sweet!”
Jeb thought for a moment. “Well if I liked boys, maybe gettin’ a pearl on a first date might be kinda romantic-like. But obviously that don’t apply to me.”
"It does sound better with that context," Jay confessed, glancing knowingly at Jeb's assertion that he didn't like boys, obviously.
Lewis rolled his eyes in the way only middle schoolers can at Jeb's words, turning to face Sam completely. He leaned all the way against Jay.
"If he goes to Florida again can you ask him to bring me back some shells?" Lewis asked.
Sam also looked knowingly at Jeb before turning to look at Lewis more fully.
“You can ask him yerself.” Sam rolled his eyes. “But I’m sure he’d get em for ya. He might even have some he could give ya now. He was just guest lecturin’ in Hawai’i a week or so ago.”
Sam extended his arm a bit to be able to squeeze Jay’s shoulder in thanks. It meant a lot to hear that Jay’d come around on Clint. Even after Clint had tackled him to the ground…
"I wonder if he's seen a real volcano..." Jeb mused.
Having worked with Clint some had turned Jay around on Clint, plus the fact he obviously cared for Sam and Sam's safety and happiness. Sam was right. He was more relaxed thanks to Clint.
And it was good to see Sam that way.
