Paige and Jono explore the attic. Backdated 12/22

Everyone in the house was gone, either out looking at the holiday lights, doing some shopping, or just not interested in being around right now, leaving Paige and Jono to their own devices. So Paige was dragging Jono up to the bedroom/attic at the top of the old farmhouse. It may be her brothers’ room, but they also stored a lot of things up here, and she was pretty sure there were some old family albums up here. It would be nice to show Jono what they were all like before everything fell apart.

“I’m sure they’re in here somewhere, feel free to move boxes around.” She brushed dust off the top of the nearest one and looked inside. Some old clothes that no longer fit any of them, probably waiting to be turned into rags or given to a family with younger kids. Not what they were looking for.

"Are you sure they won't mind us being up here?" Jono asked, looking back at the beds on one side of the attic. "....is there anything specifically I should be looking for that they might be near?"

“It’s fine,” Paige waved him off. “No one’s home and we’re not messin’ with Jeb’s comics collection so no one’ll mind.” She moved the box of clothes onto the floor to check the box underneath. Some old kitchen appliances she had never seen anyone use before.

“Uh, there might be some of Daddy’s old things in there? Not really sure where Ma put everythin’.” Since Paige hadn’t been around when Lucinda packed everything up, she didn’t know what to look for. She had just come home one day to find a lot of stuff missing and had been told it got packed away in the attic.

Jono dug around in the boxes, eye twitching a bit at the way that none of them were labelled. Most of these looked like they just had old documents in them, the kind for finances and taxes. The next box he looked in though had a stack of unopened letters addressed to Paige on top, and underneath what looked like old work clothes. “I think I found something that should have been yours.

Paige frowned and abandoned her boxes to see what Jono found. “Letters? Wait, these are from Sam, when he moved out…” She tried not to let the hurt and anger that Lucinda had hidden these from her for years come through, but it was hard. “Uh. Thanks. I’ll look at these-“

She paused, seeing something familiar in the corner of the box. “FLUPPY!” There, in the corner of a long forgotten box, was the stuffed toy dog Paige’s father had given her for Christmas one year. “Ma said she threw you away!” She cuddled the slightly dusty toy to her chest, forgetting she wasn’t alone for a moment.

Something in Jono’s chest broke. It couldn’t be his heart, he didn’t have that anymore, just this ball of emotions swirling around in his head. There was no reason for his chest to feel tight except for a response to the hurt he felt for her. “Your mum…..hid letters from you….and said she threw away your toy?

Paige turned a bit pink at Jono’s voice but still clung to the toy. “Yeah, well…that’s Lucinda for you.”

She cleared her throat, hoping it would knock some of the emotion out of her voice. “We don’t have to keep lookin’ if you don’t want to. House is ours, we could watch a movie on the couch or somethin’.” Paige wasn’t trying to deflect, but the thought of going through old photos now almost felt like too much.

Yeah.” He said gently. “We can do that, Angel…..is the toy…was it special to you?

And here Jono thought that he’d already reached the limit of how much a single person could hate Lucinda Guthrie. And yet somehow, the bitch just kept getting worse.

Paige clutched the dog a little harder. “Daddy gave him to me as a Christmas present when I was real small. Sam says I used to carry Fluppy everywhere we went. But when I was 6, I came home from school one day and Ma said I left him out in the rain or a barn cat tore him up or somethin’ and she threw him away…guess he’s been up here all these years.” She had wondered why Fluppy had gotten thrown away and not passed down or mended.

Would you-.” Gods, he hated seeing Paige look so small.Would you want me to help you get the dust off him? I- I’ve had to clean a lot of older fabrics, I know how.

God damn it, she could feel her eyes well up with tears at Jono’s suggestion. Why did he have to be so damn kind all the time? He was really making it hard for her not to tell him about her crush on him right then and there. “Yeah. I’d really appreciate that. Thank you.”
