Paige and Jono exchange Christmas presents. Backdated 12/25.
He placed the heavy box into Paige’s lap and squinted his eyes in a smile. “Go on, ‘s finally your turn.”
Wow, Jono’s present had some heft to it. And the box was big. She hoped he hadn’t gone too crazy with her present, what with the international trip and everything he had gotten for her younger siblings. By comparison, her badly wrapped and lumpy present was a bit small.
“Yours, too.” Paige placed it in Jono’s lap. “I know it’s not very even and it’s not your signature color-“ she indicated Jono’s all black and very typical outfit- “but it should do the job.”
Jono waited until Paige had started unwrapping her gift to unwrap his. The scarf was a sage green color, and had a hole towards one side, but it was soft in his hands, and he knew how long it took Paige to knit things, there was obvious care in every single stitch.
He immediately threw the scarf around his neck. He didn’t mean to, but he was accidentally projecting pure surprise and delight across the room.
“Paige,” His voice was full of warmth and barely held back emotion. “It’s perfect, I love it. I even have a sweater this color…..that in retrospect I should have put on this morning because it would have been festive….”
Paige was halfway through opening her gift before getting hit with the wave of Jono’s delight. It was almost overwhelming feeling just how much he liked her admittedly rather mediocre scarf. It was hard not to get emotional when she looked at him and saw what passed for a smile on his face as he wrapped the scarf around him. She was so gone on him. “I’m glad you like it.”
Returning to her own box revealed a heavy leather jacket. As Paige pulled it out, she revealed patches sewn all over the sides and back. Some looked commercially made, but a lot seemed to be hand sewn. They were all for different bands, and there was even a Loretta Lynn patch up on the breast of the jacket.
Paige looked up at Jono in genuine surprise. “Did you make this? It looks like your jacket…it’s wonderful!” She didn’t know if she could project her emotions like he could, but she did her best to convey the shock, wonder, and genuine delight that he had done this for her.
“Of course I did. I promised you one didn’t I?” He said it casually, like he hadn’t been working on this since March when he gave her the ring. “There’s a few different Loretta themed ones, and some for the bands I showed you that you’ve really liked…I wanted it to feel like yours and not just an imitation of mine….I’m so glad you like it, and there’s plenty of room to add more.”
He’d even painted a few little hearts onto the collar, and he wasn’t sure if he wanted her to notice them or not…
Paige gently fingered the painted hearts on the collar that she just noticed. “It’s beautiful. Thank you.” Before she could react further, she noticed how everyone in the room had stopped what they were doing to pay attention to them. Particularly Lucinda, who seemed to be glaring a hole through Jono’s new scarf.
“So,” Paige said, clearing her throat. “Who’s next? Whatcha got there, Lewis?” It wasn’t the smoothest distraction, but everyone’s attention did finally move on as Lewis unwrapped his gift from Jono, a mute for his trombone and some sheet music.
Jono pulled Paige close against his side and rubbed his nose gently against her cheek, it might have been a ‘kiss’ if they were dating - but they weren’t- but Paige’s family wasn’t supposed to know that.
“Happy Christmas, Angel.” He whispered in her mind alone.
“Merry Christmas, Jono” Paige sent back, settling into his side.
It had been fun watching Paige’s siblings open his presents, and had been even more fun watching her mum’s eye twitch at the effort he’d put into winning over all of them. But now it was time for what he’d really been waiting for.
