Backdated to October 20, Clarice and Gaia have a followup in the medlab and Clarice realizes, Gaia is not quite understanding how things work. Like hygiene. And enjoying the shower.
Checking Gaia over one more time to see if there were any lingering affects from her abrupt arrival and stay in the medlab, she had to admit that Gaia seemed pretty healthy. Maybe a touch thin, but nothing concerning. However, there was one thing that she needed to address. Well. Two things.
"Gaia," Clarice swiveled in her rolly stool away from the computer to face her. "Everything looks good. I don't see any reason you should have fainted like you did. But. Is that the same set of clothes you left here in? Because it's the same thing you've worn every time I've seen you." And it smelled like it.
The girl sat on the examination table stiffly, crinkle of the wax paper not agreeing with her general rule of silence. “Yes. It is what I was given.”
She swung her feet slightly, watching socks that were not quite white anymore move back and forth.
Right. "And have you washed it? And yourself? Using soap?" Clarice almost specified that they needed to be washed separately and all that, but decided to give her the benefit of the doubt.
Gaia cocked her head slightly in confusion. “I was introduced to the shower, yes.” It seemed a bit strange to stand under water for minutes at a time, but she obliged them this custom. “…..am I doing something incorrectly?”
"Let's go to the bathroom and check it out," Clarice suggested, "And then we can see," because yes, most likely.
She led Gaia to a room in the med lab with a bathroom attached. It wasn't fancy, but it had a shower and basic hygiene products. "Okay, walk me through your basic routine. There's body wash, shampoo and conditioner in the shower," Clarice added as she pulled out fresh towels and things.
The girl blinked for a moment, before carefully stepping into the shower to remove her clothes with an illusion of privacy. Even then, it was hard to miss the white markings lining her spine, not that Clarice hadn't seen them before in medical examinations. Garments were discarded neatly outside. Gaia turned on the tap and stood under it, letting cold water run through her hair. She looked at the other mutant owlishly, as if to ask "So?"
"Okay, firstly, warm water is much more enjoyable," Clarice turned it on to about halfway and let the water warm up a bit before adjusting it further and then stepped in, scrubs and all, "Secondly, we do more than just standing under the stream, though that can be incredibly cathartic when you're overcome with feelings and need to get them out. But for a normal shower when we're not regretting life's choices, we also need to bathe. Starting with your hair, two times a week, you can pick the days, but I like Sunday and Wednesday, " she didn't want to get into that some people washed their hair more and some less, this was a good starting point to keep it simple. She took the shampoo and showed Gaia how she squirted it in her hands and then began washing the girl's hair.
Gaia's jaw immediately clenched at the contact, but the temperature change was welcome. Her eyes rolled upwards, attempting to track what was happening on her head. This made more sense, she supposed. There was so much.. upkeep in this place. Food multiple times a day, sleeping, bathing. A lot to remember and a lot that was assumed she must know already. "Hm."
"Does it feel good?" Clarice asked, moving Gaia slightly to rinse the suds. "Now, conditioner," she applied it fairly liberally throughout her hair instead of just the ends, "You just let that sit for a little bit," she took the wash cloth and squirted some body wash on it for the other girl, "I like to wash my body while it's sitting, so this is body wash. You get it nice and sudsy and then run it over your entire body to clean it." Clarice made a mental note to buy Gaia toiletries and write out a step by step manual for her.
Looking the human equivalent of a wet cat, Gaia nodded. She accepted the cloth and gingerly took it to her arm, scrubbing away remnants of dust and grime from her various explorations of the mansion. “This is… better.”
"Mmhm. This is basically... the minimum. Most people, especially girls, do a lot more. Not always every day, but when they're going out or just want to feel good, whenever, really," Clarice was already making plans, "but generally, you want to wash your body at least daily in the shower with soap or body wash and wash your hair a couple times a week. You might have to experiment a little with what works best for you, but that's a good starting place. Any questions so far?"
Gaia put her washcloth under the water momentarily to get it wet again. “…what sort of thing do other ‘girls’ do?” The general concept, now that it had been explained to her, made sense. But the fact that there might be more was puzzling. What else could people possible be doing in here?
"Well," Clarice had stepped out of the shower, though she was still wet and making sure Gaia was doing things correctly. "Many girls choose to shave the hair off their legs and underarms. That's considered pretty normal, but it's your choice. Some remove their pubic hair to varying degrees. Most people also use a separate face wash from their body because the skin on your face is often more sensitive. Out of the shower there are various hair styling cremes and things. And facial moisturizer. And body lotion." It was fine if Gaia wanted to experiment or not, but she certainly had options!
A long look came from the pink-haired mutant, followed by a slow nod. None of that was absorbed.
Gaia reached a hand up to feel her hair, and was pleasantly surprised when it slid through the conditioner-slick strands with ease. It felt nice.
"Okay, rinse that out," Clarice instructed, getting a big, fluffy towel to dry Gaia with. "Showering make more sense now?" whether Gaia chose a minimal routine or ever product out there, it was hopefully better than simply standing under the water.
Doing as she was told, Gaia stepped under the water again, letting soaked strands fall over her face. “Yes……. thank you.” When it felt what she assumed was rinsed she turned off the shower and stood there awkwardly.
"You can check that the conditioner is out by sort of running two fingers over a lock of hair. If it is kinda squeaky, then it's out," Clarice advised, wrapping the girl in the towel. "Let me get you something fresh to wear. And I'll get you some bath products to try. Are there any sorts of scents you like? Flowers or fruity or sweet or something else?"
“Flowers, I suppose.” Her shoulders moved in the idea of a shrug. She liked being outside, after all. Even if there were not many flowers at the moment. In spring they said many would grow.
A hand reached up to feel her hair, searching for the sensation the other mutant described.
"Okay then, once you're dressed, I release you from my dungeon!" Clarice told her dramatically. "If you have any questions though, feel free to pop back in or message me or whatever. You got this."
It was debatable as to whether the girl actually would, but she nodded along anyways. “Okay.” Hopefully there wouldn’t be reason for another visit to the Medlab for some time.
