Reluctant goodbyes in front of the security checkpoint.

Kitty shifted her grip on the bag in her hand, looking somewhat morosely at Jamie. "I don't want to go," she said.

Jamie brushed a lock of hair out of her eyes. "I don't want you to either, but we don't really get a vote . . ."

"Stupid parents," Kitty muttered, casting a baleful glance at the security man watching them benevolently.

"Very. But it'll be worse if we make them make a scene. And I'm not above driving out there and stealing you away if I have to."

"I know," Kitty said with a sigh. Wrapping her free arm around him, she leaned in to kiss him. "Never wanted summer to be over quickly before," she muttered.

"Me neither. I wanna turn around and have it be August already. Do you think if I go back and rip some pages out of all the calendars . . .?"

"I think you'd have to rip the pages out of my mother's calendars, and then we're back to you skipping out on your flight back to New York."

"And the overhead compartments haven't gotten any bigger. So much for that plan." Jamie leaned in for another kiss. "Write me a lot?"

"Of course, it's the only thing which keeps me sane," Kitty promised.

"Well, I kind of like you sane. It's very attractive, the sanity." He sighed. "I'm going to miss you all the time."

"Me too," Kitty said. Biting her lip, she changed the topic, not wanting to start crying. "Say hi to everyone back at school for me?"

"You bet. Celebrate birthdays when you get back?"

"Of course." Kitty nodded. "Ane anniversaries. And generally being back." She kissed him again, then winced as she heard her flight called again. "Damn it."

"You'd better go," Jamie said, sounding like the words were being dragged out of him. "Call me when you get in, so I know you got there safe?"

She nodded again, then reached up to steal another kiss. "Love you."

"Love you too. Don't miss your flight."

"Yeah, right." She hesitated, then kissed him again. "Blasted planes," she muttered. "I have to..."

"You have to go. There's all those security checkpoints." Jamie wiped his eyes on his sleeve. "Be safe. I love you."

She ran a hand over his cheek, then sniffed. "I love you too. I'll call. And write. And... damn it." The flight was called again. "I love you," she said again as she backed towards the security station.

"I love you," he called after her. "I'll see you in August."
