Kevin takes Clea with him to use the labyrinth to eliminate the last pair of Fitzroy's guards before sending her out with the others.
Kevin had moved the team through the stone archway minutes ahead of Fitzroy, quickly making his way through the underground passages, pausing only occasionally to shine his flashlight on a specific wall or stone before turning one way or another. Occasionally, he stopped to run his fingers over a bas-relief or a carving before pointing them the way to go. Finally, he paused and gathered them up. He'd left Amanda and Topaz behind at the start of the magical section of the labyrinth to reduce Fitzroy's forces. Clea and Wanda he took with him further into the depths of the labyrinth, again, pausing from time to time to check minor elements of the labyrinth that seemed utterly innocuous to a normal observer. Finally, he stopped as the tunnel opened to a massive underground reservoir, water streaming down in all directions. He pointed to a massive steel door set into the opposite wall at the end of the huge room. "That's the library. Wanda, take up position there. Clea and I are going to see if we can remove the last of Fitzroy's support." He said, taking her back into the labyrinth. "You up for this?"
Clea followed behind Kevin closely as he led her deeper into the labyrinth. She thought she had a good sense of direction, but it was called a labyrinth for a reason. She tried to make note of the carvings he was stopping by and was in awe of the massive steel doors. Behind those doors was knowledge and probably some very dangerous items. Clea licked her lip before she headed back into labyrinth with Kevin. "Of course. I was taught by the best, I would hate to disappoint." She gave him a cheeky smile.
"Let's hope that was the case. This place will kill you in a heartbeat if you step wrong once. We'll going to eliminate any of the guards Amanda and Topaz weren't able to but don't touch Fitzroy. I'm not sure if the trigger on his heart is a bluff or not, but Amanda's going to need time neutralizing it while we keep him distracted." Kevin put a figure to his lips as they could hear footsteps in the darkness ahead of them. He checked around them quickly and snapped off his flashlight, walking her back with him into an alcove.
"I am not planning on dying down here." Clea nodded, "Don't touch Fitzroy. I'll deflect if anything comes from his direction." Her voice was down to a whisper and listened. In the alcove, Clea kept her back to the wall and raised her hands, ready to cast the first spell. She was just waiting for Kevin to give her the go sign.
"Careful. It's the second turn on the right." Fitzroy said, just at the edge of their hearing. Kevin faded back a moment and touched her shoulder in the dark. It was to still her as he moved in, his lips close enough to her ear to almost brush it as he whispered.
"Give me an illusion of a hallway just ahead of the one at the end of the hall."
Clea focused as she conjured an illusion of the hallway, remembering the carvings and textures of the walls and floors. She felt it settle in place as she nodded to Kevin, signalling it was done.
The men moved forward as they watched from the darkness. The first one made the 'second' turn into the hall, which was actually the first one. There was a brief scream cut off with a grinding, crunching noise. A thick ribbon of blood flowed out from the darkened turn and into the main hallway as both the other soldier and Fitzroy jumped back. Taking advantage of the distraction, Kevin nudged Clea with him further down the hall to another dark alcove. "Good work."
Clea smiled as she followed Kevin further down the hall, she liked it when she got praises from Kevin. Her magic was tingling at her fingertips as she made the halls a little darker. She waited for the next signal to go ahead.
Fitzroy was down to his last man but he wasn't worried. He knew his way through and his men were here to engage with the dangers of the labyrinth. "Listen carefully. Down this hall, move only when I tell you to move and where I tell you to move. Exactly. Do you understand?" The man nodded. Kevin tapped Clea's shoulder, again whispering next to her ear, almost intelligible.
"Extend the darkness forward."
Clea nodded as the darkness started to darken and extend towards the men. Any light that was in front of them was no longer insight, almost like the darkness had swallowed them whole. However, to Kevin and Clea, they could see perfectly down the hall. She nodded at Kevin to signal that it was done as she held up the illusion magic.
"Move forward three steps. Stop. Take one step right. Two more steps." Fitzroy was saying as the mercenary edged forward, looking like he was playing some odd game of Twister. "Now, shift to the right. Avoid that centre stone."
"Quick, jump left now!" Kevin said, but in a voice identical to Fitzroy. The mercenary immediately jumped into the alcove on the left and as he did, its sides immediately slammed together, crushing and killing him instantly in a gory spray. Kevin edged back and touched her shoulder. "Time for you to head out and meet Amanda and Topaz."
