Matt brings Kevin the legal documents to prove that he exists.
Finding Kevin now that he had his heartbeat was easy and following him up to the roof was just as simple, though Matt was at a point in his life where being on roofs in the cold wind wasn't his idea of a good time. "Hey Kevin," he called as he approached easily, "I've got all sorts of stuff for you."
Kevin raised an eyebrow, an instinctual reaction that he wasn't really sure why he did, but had gotten into the habit of lately. "Why?"
"Well, remember when we talked a few weeks ago and I said I was going to make you a legal person?" Matt asked, sitting down easily across from him. "I'm Matt, the lawyer."
He almost remembered. And if the way his face scrunched up was any consolation, he really was trying to remember that conversation. "There are a lot of people here. You asked me questions about Scotland?"
"I did," he agrees easily, "And how I was going to get you paperwork to make you a legally existing person," Matt reached into his bag, pulling out a manila folder, "This is a notorized copies of all your documents, birth certificates, etc. And here is a wallet with some money and a government ID," he pulled that out. It was bad luck to give a wallet without money in it, "And I took the liberty of getting you a local library card and getting you insurance cards for the Xavier's group plan."
Kevin stared ahead blankly as he took the proffered envelope. "I dinnae ken what any of that is."
"Okay," Matt nodded easily, "Which part should I explain?"
"I do not remember any of the words you said." Kevin said honestly.
"Okay," Matt sat for a minute, thinking through what to do. "I'm going to keep your papers then in a safe place. If you need them for any reason, even just to look at them, just ask and I can get them for you. As for the wallet," he pulled his own out if his back pocket, "this is my wallet. I keep things in here like my ID and cards I might need," he pulled a few out, "there's not much you need, but I did put your ID in your wallet and some money and cards to get you started. Most guys carry it in their back pocket, but you can keep it in your room if you're here on the grounds. If you go somewhere else, you should take it with you though."
Kevin's brow furrowed in thought. Some of the people at Fetter's Hill had thought about money. He didn't really know what that was though. "Whit do I do...with the money?"
Oh boy. How to explain that. "Money is what you trade for goods," he finally settled on. "Everything costs money, pretty much, but that doesn't mean you're the one paying for it. But if you want new clothes or food that we don't have here or whatever, you can either order or and have if delivered, and you give them money to do that. Or you go to a store and trade that money for the items. Everything has a price and if you don't have enough money, then you can't get it," better to not get into credit today. "Your wallet has $20 in it, because giving a wallet without money in it is bad luck."
These words might have made sense to non-Kevin persons, it’s just that Kevin was….Kevin.
He nodded, forgetting that Matt couldn’t see him. “Yes….okay.”
"I'm still not making sense," Matt noted. "Wanna go to town? We'll come back here in maybe an hour?"
Town. The idea sent a bolt of anxiety through him. The last time he’d been to town he’d been hunted. “No…..I dinnae think Davey would want me to.”
"Who's Davey?" Matt didn't know that name. Maybe North?
"He's....he brought me here." Kevin said awkwardly. Everyone had seemed to know Davey when they walked through the hallways. It was Kevin they didn't know.
"Davey... you mean Haller?" Matt asked, finally putting it together. He'd never heard of Haller called Davey before, but his name was David and that made more sense than North. "We can invite him along, if you'd like? Or ask him? But Kevin, you're not a prisoner. You're welcome to come as go as you want, with whomever you want."
"No." Kevin said. He didn't really know what to say now that his plan had failed. Matt was supposed to drop it, he was supposed to believe him.
Unfortunately for Kevin, Matt was a lawyer. "No?" he repeated. "Alright. You don't have to go if you don't want to. But Kevin, you're not a prisoner. Aren't you cold?"
Kevin shrugged. It had felt like this in the cage a lot. He was used to it. He then remembered that Matt couldn't see. "It's fine."
"I'll see what I can do to get you some warmer things," Matt offered, taking his own knit cap off and putting it on Kevin, tugging it down over his ears and then giving him his gloves as well. "This will help for now though."
Kevin frowned and backed up. Offended. "It's fine."
"Do you remember what my powers are?" Matt asked softly.
“No.” He said. Then as an afterthought. “Go away.”
Sighing, Matt nodded, "Don't destroy that hat," he said, putting the manila envelope away and leaving the wallet and other things before heading off the roof.

"$20 can buy many peanuts."
"Explain how!"
"Money can be exchanged for goods and services."
