GED - Shatterstar and Kyle
Mar. 17th, 2025 11:36 amBackdated to March 17 Shatterstar and Kyle discuss Shatterstar's uocoming GED test and opportunities after high school.
'Star sat in Kyle's office and didn't know how to start. Before coming to Xavier's graduating high school has seemed far off and dreamlike. And now...
"I can graduate at the end of the month?"
Kyle nodded eagerly. "You absolutely can. You smashed through that winter class, and you're on track to pull passing grades for this semester. Even English Lit, you're pulling a solid B minus." He flipped the screen on his laptop towards Shatterstar. "Worst thing'll be a couple regents exams, and you'll get test taking accommodations for those. "
Shatterstar did make a slight face at that. Kyle already knew how much he hated exams. But, though he was loathe to admit, they were better with accommodations.
But there was also a reason he could put graduating off, and as he was the closest thing to an advisor he had, Shatterstar had to ask Kyle for advice. "I don't know what to do after high school. I don't want to go to college."
Maybe he would change his mind someday, but it just didn't seem right for him, at least not right now.
"So don't do college." Kyle said. "I know, everyone and their brother is like "college is how you get a career." and they're not like. wrong-wrong, but you're got time and resources and if you wanna go learn how to do carpentry or, I dunno, mechanic work, or something, we can find you a trade school." He tapped the top of his closed laptop. "I've got about a ton of career advice stuff, Sooraya has the other ton, and if what you wanna do is live here until you figure it out and do volunteer work, that's also valid. That's what here is for."
It was good to hear the confirmation that he could stay here. Shatterstar didn't have to make up his mind right away. He just wished he knew what he was good at other than violence. "That's good. I wish I knew what I was good at, though."
That said, he was good at violence, and that was the only path he could see clearly for himself. So he might as well bring it up to Kyle...
"I don't think prospective X-Men trainee is a real career after all."
"Well." Kyle raked both hands through his hair and left it a near mess. "It's not. Exactly. It is a thing you can do, and we have people who do that. Logan. Scott kinda, though he does stuff for the Institute. Kurt. Again kinda, he teaches dance. But it is ..." His claws caught in his hair and he tugged them out with a grimace. "Look I probably should give you a whole speech on how it's dangerous and violent, but I was an X-Man before I was a teacher. I might throw up nine or twelve or a hundred times if you get hurt, cause you're one of my students, but if going and joining the team is gonna give you purpose, do it."
Shatterstar smiled. He actually smiled at Kyle, fully. "This is what I want to do. I know the danger. I was there when death attacked. But I felt alive and I know this is a way I can contribute."
He was made for violence. He knew this. But he wanted to direct it to something good.
"Well. " Kyle gave a barking laugh. "This is not how I expected you to tell me you're prepped for your GED test, but hey, if you want I can start the like, team discussion. There's no like - I mean it's kind of just an express intent thing, and then we get you some badass looking body armor and a new set of Danger Room scenarios. The Gen-X ones lean more fun, less being licked by Toad."
"Do we shake on it to make it official?" Shatterstar asked. "I would like to make this official."
"Yeah. Yeah, we one hundred percent shake on it."
Shatterstar still had a bit of a smile when he shook Kyle's hand.
