Not Another Teen Dimension- Kane & Mel
Jun. 19th, 2025 12:00 pmMel comes across another familiar face, and subsequently doesn’t get much math done in her tutoring session.
It was a free period and the classroom next to the library was usually open for tutoring. That's why Kane was there. While he was apparently a math tutor, his schedule didn't have any appointments. However, several of his 'friends' from the Chess and Gaming Club also did tutoring and he was there trying to get information from them about the disappearance of their science project when Mel Guthrie walked in. She wasn't that much younger than she was in their normal dimension, so it wasn't hard to recognize her. He hung back as she walked it, not sure if it was her counterpart or her.
Hurricane Melody swept into the library on a mission, looking a bit frazzled but no worse for wear. She took a moment to adjust the hair clips on either side of her ponytail before scanning the room. Her alternate self was at risk of getting booted from the cheer team if she didn’t relearn Geometry in under 24 hours. Peter Parker, the math tutor, was allegedly the key to her success.
Problem was, Mel wasn’t quite sure what he looked like.
"Mel!" Kane put up his hand. "Peter is busy. You get me today." If it was her counterpart, she was about to get the worst math tutoring session of all time.
“Oh! Howdy Miste-… um Garrison.” Mel attempted to smoothly cover her slip, to a debatable degree of success, manners getting the better of her. “I hope Peter is alright. Should we grab a table?”
She wasn’t sure who was “in” right now, but was trying her best to play her counterpart to the best of her ability.
"Yearbook stuff." He said as she sat down. As she did, he deliberately tapped on the table with two fingers; a sign they were using to indicate it was someone from the mansion and not their counterparts in charge. "How's... high school been for you?"
She immediately relaxed. “Oh thank goodness. It’s been harder than I expected to keep all this up.” Belatedly, she tapped the table as well, though it wasn’t really necessary. “Umm, fine I guess? Though it ain’t been so long for me. It’s very different. Everyone has a flip phone? An’ I can’t remember how to do half the math cause the calculators are ancient.” Mel sighed. “How’ve you been gettin’ on?”
"I'm not great at math, my counterpart is obsessed with card games I've never heard of, and I think he might be a bit of a creep trying to pass off a YTV personality as his girlfriend from Canada. So, you know, not great Bob." Kane muttered. "Any intel on that science project everyone is looking for with your friends in this world?"
Mel giggled a little. “They ain’t… really the type. I asked ‘bout it an’ they all looked at me like I’d grown a head!”
"Fair enough. We don't want to make anyone suspicious." He huffed. "How have you been enjoying 2003?"
“It’s definitely interestin’. An’ bein’ in a big city high school like this is different. Fun though, overall.. How ‘bouts you? Feel like yer relivin’ the good ole days?” She joked, having no idea when Kane would’ve even been a teenager.
"Not really. When my mutation emerged, I got fast-tracked. I was in university by 16." Kane said. "Actually, it's not that far from when I showed up at the mansion, red serge and all."
“Oh, wow.” It wasn’t something she often considered, seeing as her childhood was far from normal, but perhaps it was compared to a lot of the mansion.
Kane shrugged. "It was a very different world. Also, thanks to my dad, there were... political considerations." He said, summing up a complex situation entirely imperfectly. "How are you navigating all this? I mean, two decades earlier than you were in school."
Mel thought for a moment. “Y’know, it ain’t so much the time as it is the place that’s different? My graduatin’ class was about seventy five kids. I think it’s near five times that here. There’s a lot more goin’ on so close to a big city.” Twiddling a pencil back and forth, she continued, “I mean obviously the clothes’re dated an’ the… atmosphere has a strange feelin’. The technology ain’t so bad though. Our school computers were ancient back home. I’m awful at textin’ on these flip phones though.”
She laughed. “Oh, and I’m kinda shit at cheerleadin’. Nearly broke my ankle in practice yesterday.” Turns out a flight mutation did not transfer to grace when being chucked in the air. It was fun though, to be in the “in” group. Nobody hated her just for the blood in her veins. “It’s been fun I guess. Better than murder video games or whatever.”
"Fair enough. You might want to talk to someone in the mansion about shaking your pom-poms. I think Jubilee and Fellicia have some kind of experience in dance or whatever."
“What, yer expertise don’t extend that far?” She teased. It was funny to imagine her self defense teacher doing his best 2, 4, 6, 8!
"I'll tell you a secret. I'm a terrible dancer and cheerleading terrifies me. Don't tell Jean."
“My lips are sealed.” Mel mimed locking her mouth closed and throwing away the key. “M’sure yer other qualities will redeem you in her eyes.”
"Man, I hope so. Otherwise I need to try and get by on my looks, eh?" Kane said with a wry smile. "Alright, I need to get to... Calculus. Great. More classes I haven't taken in over 25 years."
“Ouch. Good luck. I have…” Mel pulled out her scheduled and her stomach filled with dread. “…chemistry. Oh lord. Let’s hope I remember ma tables.” Standing up, she smoothed out her skirt and slung her backpack on across a shoulder. “See ya ‘round. Here or there.”
