Backdated to Dec 5, 2026 Sam approaches Arthur with some news, and it is cause to celebrate.

Sam approached Arthur with a sort of unfamiliar, unearned confidence. He didn't exactly feel great; he actually felt a bit manic. He put his hands down on Arthur's desk, grinning at the man. "I got some good news recently. Wanna get drinks and do somethin' stupid to celebrate?"

There was a squeak as Arthur leaned back in his chair, arms spread wide like Sam had just declared a national holiday.

"Drinks and stupidity? Sam Guthrie, now you’re speaking fluent Centino! We should start small — bad karaoke, questionably legal hot wings — or we can go full tilt and see if we can get banned from an entire borough."

He spun his chair half a circle, dramatically, then stopped to point at Sam with mock-serious intensity.

"Fair warning," he continued, "stupid’s like gravity with me: when we jump, we fall. No brakes. No seatbelts." Then, almost abruptly, the intensity of his smile softened toward something more lopsided and warm. ". . . But good news, yeah, let’s celebrate. I don't need the details."

The expectant stare he gave indicated otherwise.

“I uh-“ Sam rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. “I got into college. . . so maybe not banned from a borough that might get me kicked out - but I’m absolutely down for questionably legal hot wings.”

"College?!" The words tumbled out fast, too bright, too much, his grin sharp as a sunrise. He spun half a turn in his chair, clutching the armrest like he might be the one to blast off from enthusiasm. "I knew there was a brain under all that farm-boy earnestness. That’s incredible. I’m proud of you.”

The blaze of delight simmered into something steadier. Arthur leaned on the desk, eyes holding Sam’s.

"Wings, then. The kind that make you rethink your life choices — just so we can toast to you making smarter, more properly educated ones in the future."

Sam couldn't help but grin back; Arthur's smile was infectious, and it felt good to have someone be that visibly excited for him outside of select members of the family. "I'm gonna make you eat those words." He teased. "You oughta see how hot we make 'em for New Years."

Arthur’s hands shot up in mock surrender. “Whoa, Joe College! I never went the whole diploma route — Hollywood grabbed my heart and all — but tempting an Angelino with heat? Bold move." He paused, eyes glinting as the cogs behind them turned. "Spill it, Sam. College is a means to a goal. Is it big brains, bigger dreams, or some other secret scheme?"

"Finally figured out what I wanna study- and I get paid well now so....might as well go study engineerin', yeah?" He shrugged. "Paige's bein'....weird about it but I don't know what I was expectin'."

"Weirdly . . . enthusiastic?" It was a reach, and even Arthur knew it.

Sam sighed. "I appreciate yer enthusiasm but no. We uh- got into a pretty bad fight. Unrealistic of me to expect that other people care as much as me, I know- still not fun though."

"Hey, don't let that take the shine off your win," Arthur said. "Paige'll come around. Some take time to adjust when the world shifts under their feet." He tapped a temple. "An important fact to remember in engineering."

Sam bit back a comment about how the world wouldn't be shifting if Paige had ever opened her eyes to actually pay attention to him. "Yeah....thanks. So drinks and hotwings?"

Arthur sprang up and clapped Sam on the shoulder, grin sharp and easy. He snagged his jacket, spun it once, caught it like it was all part of the show.

"Now that’s the kind of higher learning I can get behind. Set your mouth on fire, then study the science of cooling it down. Balance! That’s math. Or karma. Or dinner. Doesn't matter which."

Sam snorted but pulled Arthur into an instinctive yet brief side-hug, short enough it could even be explained as him losing balance as he was trying to clap the man’s shoulder in return. "Thanks man."
