Sarah wakes up. Shinobi's first in line to see her. The conversation is remarkably casual. Mostly fluff, 'cause the rebel!cute is back in business.

Dying can do strange things to a person. For one, it makes you capable of sleeping for days at a time, despite the fact that you're in the least comfortable bed imaginable, and painkillers aren't particularly effective in a mutant with a healing factor. But now finally, nearly two days after she entered the medlab in critical condition, Sarah sat awake and squirming uncomfortably in her bed.

The news didn't have time to spread very far before Shinobi was waiting as patiently as he could at the medlab door, his hands shoved into his pockets to keep himself from fidgeting. Once he was given the Safety Lecture and grudgingly agreed to the fifteen minute time limit, he manages a moderately dignified speed-walk through the lab - but, well, all bets are off once he finds the bed he's looking for. "Hey," he offers, smiling a touch as he moves to Sarah's bedside. "*There* you are."

Sarah shifted again, smiling groggily. "Morning," she said, reaching out for him with a hand, "long time no see."

"Morning," Shinobi echoes, smile gaining strength as he reaches for the outstretched hand, taking it in one of his own as he leans down to press a careful kiss to Sarah's forehead. "On a scale of one to ten, where ten is highest, how stupid a question is 'how are you feeling?'"

She chuckled, wincing slightly at the pain from ribs not entirely healed, and shrugged. "Let's see. I'm in the medlab. I could really use a cigarette, but Grey Crow saw fit to take out my fucking knees, so I can't even sneak out to the boiler room. This bed sucks. I'd say eleven." She shifted again. "But on the bright side, at the end of the world, I'll apparently be hanging out with the cockroaches while everyone else is dead."

Nodding sagely, Shinobi hooked a chair with his foot and pulled it closer to the bed before he sat down. "And hey, by then, they'll probably have mutated language skills. You'll be the Roach Queen, with a planetfull of minions to skitter for your amusement." After a pause, he reluctantly grumbled, "I've got roughly fifteen minutes before they kick me out of here."

"Joy. I can't wait, really." She sighed heavily. "So's the line to kick my ass started to form out in the hall yet?"

"Honestly? I have no idea. I imagine there will be a lecture, but that's when we remind them that we left, and nobody bloody asked them to show up. Technically, it was none of their business." He shrugged, leaning forward to pillow his chin against a clear bit of mattress. "Not that they'll listen, of course, but it's worth a try."

"No, course not. I should be grateful the leather brigade saw fit to run in and save my sorry ass." She shrugged, reaching out her other hand to run her fingers through his hair. "Remind me to kick Sparky's ass for freaking out on me."

"He was just worried," Shinobi replied with a quiet chuckle, closing his eyes to enjoy the fingers in his hair. "A lot of people were. You can safely expect him, Amanda and Angelo paying you visits, at the absolute least."

"And Paige. She threatened to break any bones that Grey Crow missed." She thought about it for a moment and finally added, "Which doesn't leave much."

"Blessing and a curse, huh?" Smiling wryly, he reached up to cover Sarah's hand, which might have looked slightly less comical had it not been on top of his head at the time. "I'm just glad you're here to yell at us all for worrying, luv. Wouldn't have it any other way."

"And that I am. Pussies, every last one of you." She grinned, and considered just how much effort it would take to lean forward and kiss him. Just the thought made her flinch. Doubling over was not something she wanted to do anytime soon. "Not to be demanding or anything, but get up here closer so I can kiss you."

He tutted, grinning as he dutifully lifted his head. "Come now. You know I like it when you're demanding." With a cheerful waggling of his eyebrows, he shifted half-out of the chair so he could lean well into range, grinning lopsidedly down at Sarah. "Apart from myself.. is there anything I can get you?"

She laughed, and fuck did it hurt. But she did it anyway, and then pulled him down to her for the roughest kiss she could manage without incurring the wrath of the doctors. "Sure I can't keep you for a while?" she murmured, "Since I'm sure the cigarette idea won't go over well at all."

He smiled into the kiss, making a thoughtful noise as he (reluctantly) took his head back, reaching up to idly fuss with a few strands of Sarah's hair. "I'd love to stay, but methinks they'd eye us both very sternly if I tried," he mused, casting a brief look back over his shoulder. "Granted, it would be the first stern look since I got here, so maybe I should at least stay long enough to get scowled at."

"Just you wait. Now that I'm not doing the whole sleep of death thing anymore, they're going to be all over you. And not in the good way either."

"I'm not worried. I lived with Sebastian bloody Shaw for most of my life - if these people think they can intimidate me, they've got another thing coming." Grinning, he took a moment to steal himself another kiss. "Should I stock up on smokes for when you're given your walking papers? Or is that another eleven on the stupid question scale?"

"I've mentioned it twice in less than fifteen minutes. I'd say yes, yes, a thousand fucking times yes." She nuzzled gently at his neck, and sighed. "And you'd better hope it's fucking soon, or somebody is going to have to smuggle me out."

"I can think of a half-dozen people off-hand who'd smuggle you out if you asked," he mused thoughtfully, pressing a kiss to her cheek. "I doubt it'll be too long, knowing you. Unless they decide to lock you in here as punishment for doing what you've said you'd do for the last several years. Doing your damnest to keep a promise is a noble, upstanding thing, I say."

"As if I needed any more reason to adore you," she chuckled, finally leaning back onto the pillow behind her. She shifted, and it looked like maybe she'd finally gotten comfortable again. "But there it is, because you're screwed up enough to think I'm noble and upstanding."

"I'm a mad, mad man, and I revel in my madness," Shinobi beamed, carefully brushing a bit of hair out of Sarah's face before he straightened himself up. "Life's vastly more fun this way."

Sarah yawned and squeezed his hand. Going back to sleep sounding like an awfully good idea now that she was settled again. "Y'know, I may be around with the cockroaches when the world ends, but if this is any indication, I'll fucking sleep through the first two years of it."

"Look on the bright side, luv," Shinobi chuckled, leaning down to lightly kiss the back of her hand. "You wouldn't be missing much. I'll come back down in a bit.. let some of the other folks that want to come and make swoony noises of relief at you do so. I'll be sure and have a smoke before coming back down, so you can get some nicotine via osmosis."

"You do that," she said, smiling. "I'll be waiting."
