Kitty and Lorna make the mandatory pilgrimage to the restroom.

TruNrthStar: *pushes open the restroom door and performs an impromptu pirouette* Having fun, Kitty?
manticora42: Oh, I'm having a blast! *grins as she follows Lorna in* You?
TruNrthStar: *nods* I'm glad we decided to do this.
manticora42: Oh, me too. I get to see Pirates again, and Jamie'll probably be pretending to be a pirate for a week after this. Plus it means I get to hang out with you. *grins*
TruNrthStar: *grins back* Same to same, just substituting Alex for Jamie. *winks* We don't hang out nearly enough.
manticora42: Yeah, I know. Everybody else gets to see you more than I do, simply because I'm scared of those dead white men you're so fascinated by...
TruNrthStar: *laughs* Hey, some of those dead white men should be good pals of yours. Pascal was a big math guy as well as philosopher.
manticora42: Oh, yeah, I can put up with them when they're doing math - I'm all about Leibnitz, personally - although whenever Aristotle or Plato and physics come up in the same conversation I have this overwhelming urge to run screaming from the room. But when they're doing the whole meaning-of-the-universe, human nature: god or bad thing I just can't take it. Can't follow it really.
manticora42: Never needed to either, which is probably why I never learned how.
TruNrthStar: Math is all logic and so is Phil. They're not that different. I'll have to do a pure logic course. You'll love that.
manticora42: Ohhh... I have heard good things about pure logic. Yeah, I wouldn't mind taking that. But, well... I don't know. The arguments of philosophers, so much of the time I just want to go "but why does it matter".
TruNrthStar: No no, why it matters is ethics. Why it must be is logic.
manticora42: I guess. But half the time their arguments seem... I don't know, unconnected to the facts of the world. I guess that's why I always preferred the eastern philosophers. They don't really try to claim that they know the truths as the result in the physical world.
manticora42: Or when they do I tend to ignore them
TruNrthStar: *shrugs* It's a matter of perspective really. At heart, Descartes' "I think therefore I am" is rooted in the most base form of logic. If A then B, A therefore B.
manticora42: Sure, but since you can't prove the If A then B clause of it, it just seems like a spurious argument
TruNrthStar: And such is the trouble with all the knowledge of man. We can only theorize never prove. Science for all it's glories has never proved anything.
manticora42: *frowns thoughtfully* Well, that's not entirely accurate. We've proved things within a set frame of reference and rules. For instance, we mathematically and experimentally proved the speed of light in reference to the whole of human existence.
manticora42: It's been proved, as long as you take as a given the time measure and distance measure we use.
TruNrthStar: But not forever. It's not an absolute truth. There are times and places where the speed of light is not a constant. One hundred billionth of a second after the big bang for example. So in the end, all you've got is a theory that the speed of light will always remain the same. *nods and pulls a compact out of her purse to check her make-up*
manticora42: But we're not saying it'll always be the same. Or at any rate, we're not saying it any more. Yeah, 10 to the negative 32 seconds after the big bang, before gravity became gravity things were different enough that we can't even say what it was like. But what we've proved isn't that light always traveled and always will travel at 3 times 10 to the 8th meters per second. What we're saying is that in the frame of reference we're using, i.e.: the earth and surrounding areas, this rule holds and it's proved to hold. No, it doesn't work like that past the event horizon of a black hole, but we don't need to prove what it'll be like there because we won't ever get there. Or if we do we won't make it back.
manticora42: Well, *she shrugs, glancing in the mirror*, least not as far as we can tell
TruNrthStar: *tugs on a lock of Kitty's hair* And having to add as far as we can tell means that it's not proved, just a really solid theory. *grins* This has to rate as the weirdest girl talk I've ever had.
manticora42: Oh? *looks curious, and fusses at the lock that was pulled on* What do girls normally talk about? *cocks head to the side*
TruNrthStar: *gives Kitty an astonished look for a moment* Christ, you're a young one. *shrugs* Usually the boys who are waiting oh so impatiently for our return. There's a bit of gossip and kiss and tell, though you certainly don't have to, and lots of telling each other how utterly fabulous she looks while bemoaning one's own appearance.
manticora42: *scowls* I'm not that young. I've just had very little exposure to my peer group. *she sounds like she's quoting that last line*
And you do look fabulous, but I wouldn't say I'm something to moan about...
TruNrthStar: Lucky thing for Jamie, that. It means he gets you all to himself. *grins again* It's tradition, darling. You're right though, you are just utterly adorable. It's unfair really.
manticora42: *blinks into the mirror and fusses at her hair* Don't know what you mean by that... Actually, either of them, really. *shrugs and turns back to Lorna* Seems silly, really. Why spend, *checks her watch* 15 minutes or so discussing the boys when they're right out there and we could be talking with them? I mean, it's totally cool talking about other stuff, but why would somebody rather talk _about_ their boyfriend rather than too them?
TruNrthStar: Because then they miss us and that's good for them. Makes them appreciate us. *retouches her lipstick* I suppose it is very silly but that's dating for you. No one ever said it had to make sense...or even be very dignified. I mean, we are in a restroom after all. *produces a very small brush from her purse and runs it through her hair*
manticora42: *turns around and leans against the sink, watching Lorna* True enough. I think I just don't understand people. Third order differential equations, yes. People, no.
TruNrthStar: Well, differential equations respond to logic. People not so much. They just require lots of practice. However, I think the boys have probably moved on from missing us to discuss sports or something so we'd better get back. *tucks away all her various primping paraphernalia* Ready?
manticora42: Yeah, sure. *she glances in the mirror again, and half shrugs at something she sees in there* People respond to some logic. *she adds quietly as they head out* It's just not an algorithm I understand yet...
