Betsy is by Scott's bedside while he's resting in medlab. Alex checks in on his older after returning home. They talk, they both have his best interests at heart, but will it matter?
Thanks to Alison's e-mail, the first place Alex went after returning home, besides making sure Lorna was settled, was to go down to the medlab to check on his brother. What he didn't expect was company. He stood at the doorway for a few moments, having never really talked to Betsy before, though he knew how much she meant to his brother...and how much she could hurt him like this Jean person. Finally he walked into the room. "How is he?" Alex asked softly.
Betsy had been hovering over Scott's unconscious form for the better part of the evening. Sensing Alex watching them, Betsy ran a hand across her face, trying to wake herself for the encounter. "He's resting for the most part. It's been a trying few days." She looked over her shoulder at him. "I'm glad to see you and Lorna have made it back, safely."
Sticking his hands in his pockets, Alex came to stand next to Betsy. "So he told me over IM, though I wasn't exactly expecting to come home to this. Though I know it was needed." Then he gave a small amused smile, his eyes not moving from his brother. "It was a simple trip, though quite emotional for Lorna. Of course it wasn't nearly exciting as what you guys had going on here."
"Don't remind me." Betsy shook her head at the memory. "Bloody rotten timing, if you ask me."
Alex nodded. "So why was it necessary to drug him? What did you guys do?" He didn't sound upset just defensive. This did seem a little extreme.
Lovely. Betsy glanced over at the unconscious form of her lover and then back to his brother. She felt the concern, washing from Alex and it drained her. "I can't go into the particulars, Alex. That is for Scott to share, but I will say that it was necessary. I wouldn't have thought it up myself, but when the option was presented.....it felt like the right thing to do."
"Great, it's good thing I'm dragging him off to Hawaii soon. He needs out of here if it's gotten this bad."And drugging seems a bit extreme still... Then he finally looked at her. "Can you at least say why it was necessary?"
"I'm sorry, no." She gave Alex a sympathetic look. "I have to respect what he may wish to keep to himself. But, I'm hoping that this trip will be something good for the both of you." She paused for a moment, feeling heavy with guilt. "He needs to get away and focus on himself for awhile. I honestly think you can help him with that."
Alex couldn't help but sigh slightly. "God I hope so...I hate having to keep picking up his pieces. Not that I mind...I just know he would prefer otherwiase." He sat down in a nearby chair, watching the sleeping Scott, sitting in silence because frankly...he didn't know what else to say.
Alright, she'd bite. Betsy turned her torso slightly. Her elbow resting on her knee and her head laid in between her hands. "What do you mean you keep picking up the pieces?"
Alex looked up at her, his arms going to cross over his chest. Her tone made him more defensive. "Everytime I even see him lately, it's an effort to just get him to smile. He won't let me help, so it's the best I can do. I pick up what he'll let me, but I know there's more and he won't let me in! I hate seeing him like this..."
"Hey, I didn't mean it like that." Betsy brought her hand to his shoulder, giving Alex's arm a small squeeze. "Scott will be alright, I promise. He only needed some rest."
Sighing again he put a hand up to rub his temples. "I'm sorry. I just spent a week worrying about Lorna and her mother and I come home to worry about my brother...God I hope so." Alex looked up at her again.
"I say so. Now, don't trouble yourself too much." Betsy added, giving Alex a reassuring smile. "Maddie assures me that Scott will be awake sometime tomorrow morning. By then, you can come check in on him when he's rested."
"You don't mind if I stay here a bit longer do you? Just to make sure?" He gave her a nervous smile.
"Not at all." Betsy stood up and pulled out another pillow and blanket from a cupboard behind the door. "For emergency sleepovers, I'm assuming. Here you go." She handed him a set and took a pillow and blanket for herself.
Alex took them gladly. "Thanks. They are definatly prepared for anything down here." He set the blanket under his chair, but kept the pillow, hugging it to his chest and resting his chin on the top. "Betsy, cna I ask you something?"
xpsilocke: She's looked over to Scott, already managing another cursory scan before sitting back down. "Hmm, what? Of course, of course. Sorry." Her mind was obviously elsewhere.
"A while ago, Scott talked to me about being afraid he'd hurt someone...Someone I'm pretty sure he was in love with since it sounded like something I would say about Lorna...it's you isn't?" He asked it like it was an innocent question, nnot sure what he wanted to answer to be.
Betsy hesitated, thinking it over before she responded. "Yes, it was."
OaktnOtter: Alex nodded, hs eyes closing a bit as a yawn escaped him. "I thought so, but I didn't say anything. I didn't know this Jean person and I probably shouldn't compare you two...but don't hurt him like she did. I hope you make him happy, like he deserves." His eyes were closing, despite his attempts to keep them open.
"I don't think I compare....." Betsy said, her eyes falling on Scott. "Jean was the love of his life and he hurts because he loves her."
"He hurts because he loves you too ya know. He just doesn't want to let this Jean go...And I don't want to see him hurting anymore. Scott doesn't deserve it..." Alex was looking at his brother now too, through heavy eyelids. "No one does...but he won't let anyone help him and that's the problem that's so frustrating!"
"I think that's about to change, Alex. Whether Scott wants it to or not." Betsy admitted sadly. She looked at Alex and smiled weakly. "Why don't you get some sleep? I can wake you in a little while?" Might as well, it wasn't as if she'd be sleeping any time soon and she could do with the company.
His mind want to ask what was going to change, but the rest of him was too tired. He nodded slowly. "Thanks." He turned in his seat so his head and the pillow were leaning against the wall. "You're good for him Betsy, just don't hurt him..." He said softly before drifting off,
Standing up and retrieving the blanket from under Alex's seat, Betsy looked down at the two brothers before retaking her seat. She clasped her hands together and leaned forward, exhaling deeping. "I can only hope you're both right."
