It had been a long day, so it wasn't that surprising that Kitty was studying laying on her bed. The book was proped up against her knees, and her hands were tucked behind her head, occasionally being pulled forth to turn the pages.

She'd been staring at the same page for a while now, possibly thinking about something on it, or maybe just spacing out. But suddenly she called out, "Hey, Terry?"

Reluctantly, Terry shifted on her bed and grunted, but didn't otherwise acknowledge that she had heard Kitty.

"Can you help me with something?" Unobtrusivly, one of the hands behind her head shifted, so it wrapped lightly around her headboard.

Terry sighed and drew her eyes away from the empty spot on the ceiling that she had been staring at. With overtly careful movements she turned on the bed, her brows knit tightly together, until she lay on her belly and looked at Kitty quizzically. "What do you want me to do?"

"Well, this may sound kind of strange, but can you come here and touch the bed?" She smiled at Terry, her eyes flickering as she conciously exerts her powers, attempting to phase out and take the bed with her.

The younger girl slowly stood up and walked over to Kitty, looking bewildered. "Do you want me to help you move the bed?"

"No, just touch the bed. Or, well, try to. I'm experimenting."

Still frowning, Terry reached one hand cautiously towads the headbord of the bed, eyeing the wood dubiously and throwing unsure glances towards Kitty. Closer, and closer, until she thought she could almost feel the cool, organic feel of the wood, like and aura of the natural material... no. She should have been able to feel the smooth surface, but instead her hand was in the wood. It was strange, not a feeling of the material itself but more the shadow of something that should ahve been there, the feeling of the knowledge that her hands should be gripping something right now.

With a sharp breath she snatched back her hand as if the nonexistant bed had bitten her and glared accusingly at her roommate.

"YES! Got it." Kitty grinned up at Terry, then visibly concentrated again. "Ok, can you try that again, just to be sure?"

Terry bit her lip, the nodded, and reached her hand towards the bed once more, this time with more confidence. Again it passed through the bedframe without the slightest feel of obstruction. She deliberately waved her hand to and fro, then knelt on the ground and let her hand slide down the wall and grope beneath the
bed without problem. She frowned when she felt something and pulled her hand back, a CD case firmly in her grip.

"So that's where it went!" Bemused she straigthened up and carefully laid the CD on the nightstand, mustering Kitty curiously.

Kitty looked thoughtful, and let her hand release it's hold around the bed, stretching up above her. "You know, I kind of think I know how this works." She bit her lip, looking up at it. "Or well, not how it _works_, but how I can make it work. Will you do it one more time?"

Terry shrugged and "Sure, just see that you don't suddenly loose concentration. I'd hate to have my hand trapped in there."

Carefully, Kitty placed a hand flat on her bed and shut her eyes, trying to sense the world around her. She shifted, aware of the change, and said, "Ok, give it a shot."

Willingly, Terry immediately stretched her fingers towards the headbord. There was a sharp *thunk*, and with a muffled curse she drew her hand back, cursing loudly and shaking her fingers as if that would lessen the pain.

"Yeah, that's what I thought," Kitty said as she opened her eyes and shifted back to solid.

"That's what you thought?" Terry asked, accusingly. "Hmpf." Still glaring at the offending bed she flunked down next to Kitty and after a moment asked curiously, "And what have we found out, now?"

"I think I have to be 'containing' whatever I try to phase with me. Like, I can take my clothes, cause they're sort of a... an extension of myself, but the stuff in my pockets only goes because I am containing them, or rather, my clothes are. So if I 'contain' the bed or anything else, I can phase with it, but just touching it isn't enough. Does that make sense?"

"Well, I guess in a way. I mean, you cannot make the whole bed shift but you have to, err, be shifting with it." Frowning she added, "or so."

"Yes and no. I mean, yeah, I can't shift it without being shifted myself, or at least I don't think I can... but that's an experiment for another day. What I meant was that earlier I had my hand wrapped around the headboard, see..." Sitting up Kitty reached over, closing her hand around the edge of the wood but not activating her power, not wanting Terry to drop through to the floor beneath the bed. "But when I just touch it..." Her hand shifted so it was laying flat on the board. "...I can't do it. Prsumably then I would have to be 'holding' onto something to shift it, not just touching it. I rather suspect that would go for people to. And really, as long as whatever I was 'containing' was containging something else I bet I could shift that other thing to. Maybe people holding onto each other and me holding onto one of them. I could get an infinite number of people that way. Or well, probably a finite number but you know what I ..." Glancing over she caught the look her roommate was giving her. "Ah. I'm going on again, aren't I? Sorry." She grinned, looking a little embarassed. "Thank you though."

"No problem."

Yay! Terry! :)

. . . And did this get chopped off in the middle, or something? Starts mid-sentence.
