Remy has a proposal for Lorna. She accepts.
"Dat is why Remy hate malls." LeBeau said, making an excessively rare appearance in the mansion during the day. "All dose people looking for sales, all de kids, de occasional mutant attack. Think maybe I look at shopping on-line from now on."
Lorna cracked a weary smile, “You should see Macys White Sale or Black Friday.” She was lying on her back on the couch, legs kicked up on the back. “What brings you up here? I thought you were supposed to burst into flames if you stepped foot inside or something?”
"Remy had de wards deactivated. Now as long as Van Helsing's busy, I should be okay." Remy shrugged, moving in to perch on the arm of the couch. "Heard dat you got involved on de attack earlier."
She shook her head, “Just some shielding when they got in. As loud as it was, things were just going to keep getting worse.” She scrubbed her hands over her face then shoved herself up so she was sitting, facing him.
"Dat sounds like de basic plan here. If it bad, it will get worse. If it's worse, it's going to get strange." Remy said, a sour smile on his face. He looked down at the arm of the chair, fingers plucking lightly at the fabric. "Manuel got out of de medlab a day or so ago."
She shuddered, “Don’t remind me. He stays in his room, at least. I’ve adopted an out of sight, out of mind philosophy.”
"I got an even better idea. Ever consider Europe?" Remy said offhandedly, crossing his arms over his chest and letting the smile grow a little larger.
She blinked at him, “Come again?”
"Figure if anyone here needs a break, it's you." Remy shrugged. "'sides, wit' Sarah leaving and de chaos here, it likely best if Remy's not here for a few days. Wisdom wants me to try and activate de old intelligence nets I used to have. Maybe find out what de psychopath was doing in de mall."
“You think going to Europe to track down what are probably highly dangerous people is going to be a vacation?” Lorna propped her chin on her knees. “You have a strange idea of a break, Remy.”
"Chere, Remy is going to be tracking down highly dangerous people. You, on de other hand, are going to be relaxing and enjoying yourself. If I get stung, dey'll start looking for singles in hotels and traveling. But a couple..." Remy said, grinning.
“So I’m a beard?” She raised an eyebrow.
"Remy hadn't intended to wear you on his face. Won't dat Alex' complain 'bout something like dat?"
Lorna stared at him for a very long second then started giggling. “We’ll never find out because that’s just not even in the realm of possibility. Sure, I’ll go. How long were you planning on being gone?”
"Three days. Honestly, it's not dat dangerous. Dese are informants, weasels; de types dat make money by telling people things. But, Remy alive cause he's de paranoid type." Remy said. "Plus, figured dat a few days on de continent might be just what you need to relax."
She nodded. “Let me talk to Alex. I suppose you want to leave soon?”
"Tomorrow morning. We should be in Paris in time for dinner." Remy said. "Basically, your job is to play tourist. Makes for a good cover. Go and buy things, sightsee. Remy will meet up with you for some. De rest, well, keep your cell phone on in case."
“I can do all that.” She rolled off the couch and to her feet. “Of course, now I have to figure out what in my wardrobe is fit to wear to Paris.” She patted him on the shoulder. “Give me flight details when you get them? I’ll be getting ready.”
Remy pulled a tan package from his jacket pocket and handed it over. Lorna raised an eyebrow and opened it, to find a passport, driver's license, credit cards, a gold wedding band and a stack of rubberbanded Euros. "Figured you'd say yes. Just get used to de names."
She laughed, “You’re alarmingly efficient.” She looked through the papers and raised another eyebrow, “Mercy, huh? I suppose I can get used to being called that. How long have we been married, sweetie?”
"Remy was going to go for de honeymoon, but figured dat three days of heartshaped beds might drive us both mad. Couple of years, going to visit my relatives in de EU. Made you full American. Not to sure your language skills." Remy said, getting up and waggling his left hand at her, the until that time unseen wedding band glinting. "I'll come get you at six." He paused. "No adultry tonight, chere. Dat's grounds for divorce."
“My French is only good enough to order in restaurants. And it’s not adultery if you don’t get caught.” She winked and laughed. “I’ll see you at six then.” She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and ran out. Explaining this to Alex was going to be a treat.
