Moira discovers Miles sneaking around in the MedLabs and they have a discussion about his mom. And then Miles gets sneaky and tricks Moira into getting more, much needed sleep.
Moira walked quietly down the hall, a stack of books on energy mutations in her hands--one written by herself but no one needed to know that. With Henry back, she could take a much longer breather than before and she wanted to rest and study at the same time. There might be something in here that could help with this situation, she thought, turning a corner. If only...she paused and blinked as a flash of green suddenly zoomed across the hallway.
Lips twitching, she walked forward and cleared her throat. "Miles?" she called. "Thought we told ye ta get some rest?"
Being spotted on purpose and looking as though it hadn't been was an art, just like not getting caught was. The challenge was all in how you backed up and tried to look far too innocent and casual about it. Holding his sneakers (socks were perfect for sneaking around in the medlab - squeaky sneakers not so much) he backed up slowly, giving Moira a wide-eyed "uh oh" sort of look.
He had that patented "I'm up to something but not really and...whoops, just got caught!" look on his face. Smiling, Moira crossed her arms, tucking the books under one armpit, and shook her head. "Yer mum's sleepin', lad--want ta come an' get somethin' ta eat in me office, though, before ye get some rest?" She paused. "Upstairs, in yer bed?"
"Miles has been upstairs in his bed every night since Moira and Doctor Madelyn let Miles go from the medlab," he pointed out, very practical like all of a sudden. He had far more solid ground to stand on when it came to sleeping and eating, and he knew it. After a moment's hesitation, he sat down, to put he sneakers back on, obviously trying to work out how to say the next things that was bothering. "Miles knows Mama is not really sleeping. Miles overheard."
Her face softened for a second. Miles was incredibly intelligent and they had been so busy...she sighed and mentally kicked herself. "Nay, she's nay reallin' sleepin. 'er body is 'ealin' itself though, th' amount o' lasers she's producin' is goin' down every day." She had always been honest with Kevin, she should never had tried to hide the truth from Miles behind pretty and comforting words.
Lasers not happening so often was good. So was healing. Not sleeping was bad but Moira didn't seem to be over concerned over that just yet. Or so he thought. Miles hadn't seen anyone go in with food the entire time he'd been watching and the other times he'd snuck in, but maybe he'd just missed that. Maybe. "Moira does not know how long Mama will be there." It wasn't a question.
"We dinnae, tha's right. Sometimes a person can 'eal much faster than someone else--like Sarah or Logan. Even those without 'ealin' factors 'ave pretty good recovery times. So we dinnae 'ave any idea 'ow lon' she'll be there." Reaching over, she settled a free hand on Miles shoulder. "But I know she'll get out eventually, Miles. Yer mum's already past the worst days."
Miles nodded once, then looked up at Moira solemnly, holding up his arms for a hug. He'd already brought down more fruit bars for Haroun and it didn't matter if he left now - he could bring more food down tomorrow morning before sunrise for him. And Moira still looking tired and Hank was there which meant she could get more sleep. And besides, he'd promised Nathan he'd help. "Miles is tired," he sighed, which was the entire truth, as handy as it was.
There was a rather large tug at Moira's heart strings at that simple action. Shifting around the books so they were completely under one arm, she reached down and hugged him. Not surprisingly, he quickly wrapped his arms around her neck and she chuckled as she stood up. She hadn't carried anyone like this since, well, Kevin and it brought back a flood of memories.
"Are there pillows in Moira's office?" Innocent questions were best and it was a very good question to ask when naps were involved. Nathan had said he could easily come and fetch Moira once she was asleep too, so Miles had no worries about where she fell asleep, so long as she did.
"Lots actually," she answered, shifting him to a more comfortable position on her hip. Miles was gaining weight but she knew Alison, and herself, would be happier once he gained some more. "From when I 'elped Jamie out a while back."
"Jamie is helping Miles. It is a secret project. Kitty is helping too." That said, Miles very contentedly rested his head on her shoulder. Secret was secret and he had a feeling Moira would understand that. And not letting go once they reached the office because he'd 'fallen asleep' should work just fine as ruses went.
"Secret projects are always good." When they reached Moira's office, she managed to get them inside without dropping either the books or Miles. Taking the time to softly drop off the books on her desk, she headed towards the large pile of pillows in the corner. "Miles?" Moira blinked down at him and quirked an eyebrow. Was he asleep already?
He certainly seemed to be, a tired sigh escaping him in his sleep, arms firmly holding on to her as he snuggled a bit more comfortably in her arms.
Well, maybe if she lowered him gently down, she would be able to remove Miles from her arms and settle him down on the pillows to rest. Unfortunately, Moira soon realized that he was _not_ letting go any time soon and she didn't want to hurt him by prying him off. She could wake him--but he needed the sleep and she simply didn't have the heart to do that to him.
Moira considered her options. Laying down with the boy wouldn’t hurt and he would soon loosen his grip when sleep hit him a little harder.
About ten minutes later, Miles cracked an eye open. Yep. That was a sleeping Moira all right. Carefully he dug out his cell phone, smiling a little as he carefully composed an SMS message.
