Set on Saturday, November 20th, Alex comes bounding in to Shiro's room and tell him about how he celebrated Lorna's birthday. Shiro is not jealous (much), but proceeds to ridicule his best friend mercilessly.
Shiro's physics textbook lay abandoned at the foot of his bed. He'd had it with studying. It was much more entertaining to just lie down and stare up at the ceiling. Hmm, maybe he should buy those glow-in-the-dark star stickers and put them up there. That might be cool. It would at least make the place feel more homelike now that he was alone there. Not that he was bitter, no.
Still full of energy from Thursday night, Alex came bounding into the room he used to share with Shiro, a couple books since Alex had studying to also, but not until he told Shiro the good news! He sat the books down on his old bed and sprawled out, a wide grin on his face as he looked over at his best friend. "Hey Shiro! Remember the conversation we had at the pizza place in Japan?"
Startled by Alex's sudden appearance in his room, Shiro shot up and held his hand out, almost ready to blast the intruder across the room. Upon seeing that it was just Alex, though, he lowered his hand and shook his hand. "Damn it, Alex, don't surprise me like that." He turned around to face Alex on the other bed. "Do you mean the one about . . . Oh. About you and Lorna?" he ventured. His mind was already formulating what Alex wanted to talk about, but he kept those silent, not willing to jump to conclusions.
"Since when do you not like surprises by your best friend? I'm hurt really..." obviously getting over it quickly, he was still all grins. "And yes that very conversation. I'm happy to tell you, it's no longer true!" He was practically jumping up and down like a five year old, so excited to tell Shiro.
"Well, it's your choice if you want to be in intensive care for a month," Shiro shrugged. "And . . . what? Did you . . ." Shiro's eyes widened and he nodded. One of his conclusions was correct. "Oh. So you two . . ." He tried searching for the right words so he wouldn't sound like a prude or like a pervert. "You finally slept together? I take it by your expression that it was really good, then."
"Duuuude, it was totally...mind blowing it was so awesome. It was like, the thing we needed to..." Alex paused to search for a word to fit what he'd felt, "prove that our relationship would work, no matter what." Then he shook his head, still grinning. "Dude, I ain't even explaining it properly, but...duuuude!"
"If you say that word one more time, I swear, best friend or not, you'll find yourself on the receiving end of a plasma blast," Shiro threatened, although obviously not seriously. Well, mostly not. "So now that you have proved that your 'relationship would work no matter what,' now what?"
Alex frowned, totally tempted to say it just to annoy Shiro, but he wasn't ready to test his theory that their powers reacted with one another just in case he was serious. That was talk for a later time. And he did have to pause a moment to think of an answer to Shiro question and couldn't stop the wince that came when he realized the answer. "Oh god...now we have to tell her parents...her Dad is going to shoot me, I'm sure of it..."
"What, you have to?" Shiro asked. "I do not understand why. From what you have told me, Mr. Dane is not particularly welcoming of your relationship with Lorna. It is probably not a safe thing to advertise the fact that you are having sex."
"Lorna is really close with her parents and I'm not going to let me get between them. Of course she's going to tell them..." Alex sighed then buried his head in his hands. "I'm going to get the shotgun lecture again I know it...but you know what, it was worth it." His head came back up and he smiled. "She is finally loosing Her last little grip on my life." From his tone, it was clear it was not Lorna he was talking about just then.
"It's a good thing that Lorna has her powers, then, isn't it?" Shiro's whole expression changed when Alex made the last comment. Instead of being defensive or jealous or whatever he was, he immediately became sympathetic. "Good. It's about time that bitch stopped controlling you."
"Yeah." Alex said simply to both of Shiro's responses, letting silence drift between them for a few moments, until he chuckled softly. "I thought that would be the hardest part of healing...to be honest? It's just trying to make myself say Her name..." Then he shook his head. "Odd how those things work...So how are you?" He asked, as if his previous statement was just him thinking out loud.
"Your ability to switch topic is uncanny, Alex," Shiro told him, the faintest hint of a grin in his voice. "I am currently floundering under all of my responsibilities. I have to worry about my own exercise and training schedules as well as Krav Maga lessons from Mr. al Rashid, classwork, college applications, this damned portfolio that will never get finished, and of course Leyu-chan. I think I want to steal Jamie's power, even if just for a day."
"Why thank you, it's one of my most useful skills." Giving Shiro a sarcastic look, Alex laid back on his old bed, head resting on his hand. "You know, if you need help with the college applications stuff, I'll gladly help. Chances are I'm having the same problems. And if Leyu is getting to be too much, you can always send her over to Lorna and me, we'll gladly entertain her. You know how much Lorna likes spoiling her with new Pocky flavors. We'll gladly help you so you don't have to resort to power stealing." The thought of that made Alex chuckle.
"I need someone to write me a recommendation for my application, but I am clueless as to whom to ask. Rasputin would make sense, since he's the art teacher, but as much as I like him, I also think he's too stupid to write something good. Ms. Munroe might be a good bet. Hmm, do you think you could get your brother to write something glowing for me?" He closed the physics book, kicked it off the bed, and lay down himself. "Please take Leyu-chan off my hands. Just until the end of the term, so I can get everything completed."
"I'm sure Scott would be happy to write a recommendation for you. And I don't think you give Piotr enough credit, I bet as another artist he'd write you an excellent rec at least what the art schools are looking for anyway." Alex shrugged, "You might be pleasantly surprised. And as far as Leyu, I'll talk to Lorna but I doubt she'll care. We'll gladly help you out dude."
"I am not afraid of Rasputin thinking bad things of me," Shiro explained, speaking slowly to give him the time to articulate himself. "I just doubt his ability to - to express what he thinks of me in a manner befitting such an important task." He inwardly smiled, impressed by how diplomatically he put that. Obviously, his father had rubbed off on him quite a bit. "And remind me to get Lorna something really nice for Christmas as a thank-you for amusing my sister for me."
"I still think you underestimate the guy, but whatever. I'll get on Scott for ya, no worries." At the second part Alex gave him a mock glare. "Just as long as it's not too nice... don't want me to think your hitting on my girlfriend now..."
"Thank you. I knew that being friends with you would be rewarding someday," Shiro said with a straight face. "I would never dream of flirting with someone who was already taken, Alex, much less your girlfriend. But I suppose this means that a copy of the Kama Sutra is out of the question."
He tried, he really did, but something about Shiro suggesting giving Lorna a copy of the Kama Sutra made Alex burst out laughing.
Shiro grinned. He thought this would be Alex's reaction. And he couldn't help but laugh along with his best friend. It was certainly a very odd comment coming from Shiro of all people. "Does that mean that she already has one?" he teased.
"I really don't wanna know to be honest, but feel free to ask her. I'd love to see the reaction on her face if you did!" Again not being able to help it, he burst into another round of laughter.
Shiro chuckled and shook his head. He may not know Lorna that well, but he would not be surprised if she reacted rather poorly to that question. "I enjoy having iron in my blood, so I think I will steer clear of that particular question."
"I always knew you were the smart one out of the two of us." Alex kidded with a goofy. grin.
"Well duh. You just stand there and look pretty." Shiro nodded knowingly. "I like this dynamic."
Alex playfully batted his eyelashes at Shiro. "You think I look pretty?" He could barely get it out before starting to laugh,
Shiro was glad that Alex was busy laughing, because he was growing uncomfortable. He threw a pillow at Alex to hide it. "Leyu-chan thinks so."
>
"You're the one who said it, not me!" He was happy to return the pillow, along with one of his own.
Shiro caught both pillows and put his back down before throwing Alex's back at him. "That reminds me, you left some of your belongings here. Those pillows, a couple of magazines, some dirty socks - I don't know what you do to them, Alex, but they reek."
"It's called physical activity that doesn't involve pajamas." Alex wisely held up his hands to show he was kidding, he wouldn't dare seriously insult Shiro's choice of sport. "And do you really want me to clear out all my stuff? Gives me an excuse to come back and bother you..."
"You are treading on thin ice, Summers," Shiro warned, eyes narrowing, although he was for the most part taunting Alex. Shrugging, he continued. "It does not matter one way or another to me, actually. But it's not as if you require an excuse to come visit me, anyway."
"No but if I take back all my pillows, I won't have anything to do this!" And with that, Alex threw both of his pillows at Shiro, suddenly feeling very immature. "What are you gonna do about that? Huh Yoshida ?"
Shiro deflected both pillows and without warning shot forth from his bed, pouncing on Alex with enough force to send them both rolling off the bed. Shiro quickly managed to regain his sense and got on top of Alex, kneeling on his chest to pin him down. He held Alex's wrists to keep his arms down, his grip surprisingly strong for someone of his size. "I win."
He had been laughing and joking around, but Alex wiggled around under the smaller boy's grasp, unable to move. Then he gave Shiro a very frustrated look. Why was it he could be overpowered by both his best friend and his girlfriend? "Why do I always end on the losing side of fights like this? I feel like Simba in the Lion King...so gonna let me up Nala?" He couldn't stop the grin that appeared when he said the female name.
"Scott did not teach you well," Shiro explained. "He failed in his duty as an older brother to show you how to properly act when you are tackled. Or maybe it is because you invoke Disney, which is Evil, which makes you an Agent of Evil." Shiro grinned back at Alex, a touch menacingly. "But if you so insist on being a cartoon lion by the most abhorrent 'entertainment company,' and I use the term loosely, then I will only let up if you promise not to sing."
"I'll have you know that the only tackling done when we were little was by yours truly because Scott always wanted to read when I wanted play. I was a much more active little kid then he was. And now I know a weakness against you..." Alex couldn't help but smirk. "And dude, you don't ever want to hear me sing. That's painful even to my own ears."
"I have heard you sing Yellowcard in the shower, so yes, I agree that I should be spared your voice," Shiro solemnly agreed. "I believe your government forbids cruel and unusual punishment, after all."
"Yes it does, and being held down by a small Japanese guy counts, so get off dude!"
"I did not know that was an interpretation of that clause in your Constitution," Shiro said, glaring at Alex as he got up, taking care not to put any more pressure on Alex as he arose than was absolutely necessary.
"Ahh but since when do I interpret anything the same way as everyone else? It must be the blonde, that's my defense and I'm sticking to it." Alex stood up quickly with a wink, then brushed himself off. "Wanna go watch a movie or something, since I'm so wound up now I doubt I could concentrate..."
Shiro first response, which died on his lips before he said it, would have been something along the lines of: "Then why don't you go have sex with your girlfriend?" But that would have been crude, and Shiro was nothing if not civilized. "And I am supposed to sit down and watch a movie with you when you are bouncing in your seat like Miles?" he asked instead.
Alex couldn't help it. he giggled at that thought. "Yes, because you're my friend? Please Shiro?" Going to see Lorna wasn't even on his mind, right now he just wanted to keep having fun with his best friend.
What was it about Alex that always made Shiro laugh? "Fine," he relented, holding back a chuckle. "But I am keeping you away from sugar and caffeine."
"Fine fine," Alex brushed off the last statement as if Shiro hadn't even mentioned it. "You go pick something out while I get popcorn and sodas!" He gave Shiro another grin before rushing out the door to the kitchen to get the said items.
"Kuso. Don't you dare!" Shiro shouted, running after him.
Shiro's physics textbook lay abandoned at the foot of his bed. He'd had it with studying. It was much more entertaining to just lie down and stare up at the ceiling.
