Who: Jubilee
When: Sunday 12th December 2004 Time: 4am
What Happens: Jubilee's trip back runs into a little trouble when the bus breaks down. She spends time in a roadside greasy spoon as it gets repaired.

Jubilee stared at the bus outside the window of the small roadside Café she had found herself at, sometime between 4am and 5am in the morning. She hadn’t really bothered looking at her watch as she idly stirred the coffee in front of her. She was on her way…home, she supposed, although it wasn’t something she’d really thought about before. The school was home though, had been for some time if she really thought about it.

The bus had broken down a little ways up the road and had to be towed; it’s passengers wearily descending upon the place with an air of long suffering. They were seated about the place now, and she could hear some of the more social of them chatting brightly off to the side near the jukebox. It was all so cheerfully mundane and even cliché; she kept thinking she should pinch herself to make sure she hadn’t fallen asleep.

She was travelling under the name of April, a college kid, her hair done up in braided pigtails, low slung jeans and a top with Britney Spears blazoned on the front completing the image.

“Wool-gathering, dear?” asked a kindly voice.

Jubilee raised her eyes, taking in the little old lady standing in front of her.

‘My God, it’s June Cleaver’ she thought, eyes wide.

An older version, obviously but that cheerfulness that Jubilee had always felt radiating from the television mother was definitely there in this woman. She wondered how many bodies the little old lady had hidden in her back garden.

‘She seemed like such a nice old lady’ Jubilee thought with a snort.

“Just a little.” She replied, smiling at the old woman. “Did they say when the bus would be repaired?”

“No, sweetie. They don’t think it’ll be long, though.”

Nodding, she placed her earphones back in and went back to staring out the window. It was an absolute horrible winter day outside, rain drizzling down and leaving the world outside carpeted in a grey fog. Jubilee had been trying to radiate an attitude of ‘leave me the fuck alone’ since she’d walked into the greasy spoon. It wasn’t so much that she was unwilling to have company, just that right now she didn’t particularly want to leave any lasting impression on any of her fellow travellers.

Other then that of sullen, bored college student, anyhow. Grandma did not appear to be paying attention to these signals however and sat herself down, smiling somewhat brightly at Jubilee.

“Now I remember this one time, Erb and I were on our way to Texas and the bus just plumb shut down, driver couldn’t tell what the devil was wrong.”

She was in hell…suburban hell and next time she saw Remy she was going to do something really nasty to his breakfast cereal. Liquid laxative sounded about right. She focussed again on what Grandma was saying. Something about visiting relatives…no, Grandchildren…

Oh dear lord, no. Remy, you bastard, you utter, utter bastard.

“Here they are dearie, aren’t they just darling? Erb keeps telling me I shouldn’t show them off so much but they’re such sweethearts, I can’t help myself.”

It would appear that Grandma had cats, and wasn’t afraid to use them.
