Late Sunday after Alison/Lorna log

Alex walked down the street as quickly as possible, the rain not bothering him much if at all. If anything, this weather was more at home for him then New York had been before, even though it was freezing. He'd borrowed some sweat pants from the shelter when it had been requested that he go outside and find a certain green haired metal manipulator and convince her that rest was a good thing. And he needed a rest too. He had been working with the Red Cross people all day and he couldn't take the sight of any more wounded, not right at the moment anyway. He shivered slightly and thought he saw a glimpse of green in front of the building, so he hurried toward it.

Lorna had returned to her light pole and was staring fixedly at the building in front of her. Her concentration was so total that she didn't notice Alex until he was right in front of her. Even then, she only held up a hand to forestall anything he might say. She was soaked to the skin, her clothes plastered to her despite the supposed water proof qualities of the outermost layers and she was shivering violently but none of that mattered. Until she saw her team and their targets come out of that building, she had a responsibility to keep the place standing.

Alex had figured she would be stubborn but with one glance, he understood why. She had to keep that building standing for the sake of the people inside, but she didn't have to freeze doing it. Kneeling beside where she stood, he took off the backpack he was wearing, complete with first aid supplies in case he had needed them and a blanket. He pulled the thick blanket out and stood, wrapping it around Lorna's shoulders. Then, Alex moved to step behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist in hopes that between the blanket and his body, she would warm up a bit and would be able to keep going a little while longer.

Lorna leaned back into Alex without losing any of her concentration. They stood silently in the rain for several long minutes then Lorna shuddered in relief. From the dark hole in the side of the wreckage, flashlight beams could be seen. One by one, the members of the rescue team emerged, victims clinging to them. As soon as she was sure that all the people were out of the building, she released the hold she had on the metal of the building and felt it snap and tumble. Only now did she turn to Alex, "We should check them out."

Giving her a concerned look, he shook his head. "Let others do that. We need to get someone to look at you…" He put a hand up to stop the protest he knew was coming. "You're exhausted and aren't going to much help to anyone in this state. Come on, let me help you, please." The last part almost came out like a beg, for Alison had told him how tired Lorna was and seeing as she was almost falling into his arms, Alex knew it was time for Lorna to stop and he didn't really want to force her, but he would if he had too. It was for her own good.

Lorna started to shake her head but sighed instead, "I need to check on my guys first. It'll just be a minute." One member of the rescue team was already on his way over and Lorna gave Alex a pleading look. "Help me stay strong for them?"

Alex could only sigh. "Alright, if only you promise to come with me and get some rest afterwards..." He kissed her gently on the cheek before stepping away from her. "You've been so strong for me lately, I can only be to glad to return the favor." Alex bent down and picked up the first aid kit with one hand, the other clasped in one of Lorna's.

Lorna manages to muster up a grateful smile for him then goes forward to meet her team, "Aaron, how did it go? Is everyone okay?"

Aaron gave Alex a quick once over before focusing back on Lorna, "Mostly. You leaving?" His tone implied disappointment and even a bit of disapproval.

Alex frowned slightly at being scrutinized, but shrugged it off and stepped forward. "Yes she is, to get some much needed rest." he said politely and firmly, pushing some wet blond hair behind his ear. "If you are finished here, of course..." He added, hoping the man would say yes and Alex could get Lorna out of there.

"Who are you, kid?" Aaron asked, none too pleased to be losing his metal clearing worker.

Alex frowned. The guy didn't have to be rude about it. "Someone who cares for her well being. If she continues in this state, she’s going to do more harm then good, to both your work and herself. Is that good enough for you?"

Lorna made a small sound that was probably the beginnings of a protest but Aaron ignored her, "I know that we've been out here as long as she has and we've been in and out of hell and all she's done is move some metal and that didn't take more than a wave of her hand." Lorna tried to muster up some indignation at that but decided she was just too tired. She leaned against Alex's shoulder and waited for this to be over.

Feeling her leaning against him, Alex put an arm around her waist to support her. "What she's been doing doesn't only take a wave of her hand. She's done more work then the rest of you combined. Think of how much power it would take to lift some of things she has. That power has to come from somewhere, and it's coming from inside her!" Alex didn't know a better way to make this man understand, other then punching or pleading. Considering how much his hands were burning lately, he went with pleading. "Please, can't you see how exhausted she is? There's no more power left in her to move a cup, much less a whole building...let me help her."

"I don't have time for this." Aaron reached up, pulled off the little star pin on his collar, and threw it to the ground. "Get out of here." Lorna flinched as the pin hit the asphalt. "Stupid mutant brats, leave the work to those of us who can take it." He turned and stomped away.

Alex glared after the retreating figure, wishing he had the time to make that man understand. "we've worked hard enough for things you take for granted... shore-dump" he grumbled softly before turning to Lorna, wrapping his arms around her shoulders, his temper instantly switching from angry to caring. "Come on, let's get you somewhere warm."

Lorna nodded and let most of her weight rest on Alex, "I didn't know he thought that. He was always really nice before," she said in a quiet voice. She turned exhausted eyes on Alex, "Do you think he meant it?"

Slowly and carefully, he began leading her toward the nearest shelter, ready to just pick her up if her strength failed. Biting his lip, he thought before he spoke. "Don't think about it too much. He’s exhausted as well and not thinking straight..." Though in his mind, Alex had his doubts, but Lorna didn't need to think about it now. "Are you alright besides being tired?"

"Yeah, just did a lot of hand waving today," Lorna responded dully. Her steps were rather uncertain as exhaustion set in. She'd been fighting it off for hours now but now that she was given a chance to relax and lean on someone else, the whole day seemed to settle heavily on her and chilled her in a way the rain hadn't been able to. First it seemed just that she was drained of all her resources but then the blinding headache rolled over her. "Too much," she murmured in philosophical regret then slowly crumpled into blessed unconsciousness.

Alex gave a surprised yelp as he suddenly felt Lorna collapse, but he easily caught her before she fell. Settling her gently in his arms, he began walking toward the shelter and a restless Alison. As he walked, Alex looked down at her in her peaceful sleep and couldn't help but smile.

Reminds me of Anne McCaffrey's Pegasus books. They had that same problem -- the idea that telekinesis, in that case, was no effort -- but got to set up an elaborate experiment to show it, having... let's see. One person with a machine, one with just muscle, and one teke each had to move the same mass, and total energy expenditure was recorded. (I believe for the person with the machine there might've been both personal/physical and overall records.)

...Hmmm.
