Clarice & Madelyn
Jan. 13th, 2005 09:42 pmClarice finds an article about teenage EMTs and wants to try out, but isn't sure about everything. Insecurities arise again, but are quashed like the bugs they are.
"Hey Doclady!" Clarice greeted, heading into her office wearing the new scrubs she'd been given. It was almost painful to look at. "I saw the COOLEST article in the paper!"
Maddie looked up, blinking only momentarily - she was getting used to Clarice's entrances. "Which one was that, pixie?" she asked, smiling at the sight of Clarice in scrubs with neon fish all over them. Definitely the perfect Christmas gift.
"This!" she brandished the local paper, setting it down on the desk. "They're starting a program for teenage EMTs! For the summer! Do you think I could qualify?"
"It's possible..." Madelyn said thoughtfully, sliding her reading glasses down off her head and perusing the article. It all sounded above-board, and easily enough checked... "Actually, more than possible, pixie. You've come a hell of a long way, and your exams results for Field Medicine were excellent."
"Well, the test isn't for a couple months yet, I could study and practice...we get our share of emergencies here. And RedX too," she said, detailing out her plan, dramatically, "and, it would be a summer job. And hopefully help HeliX too. If I can get in."
"Well, any help you need from me, you've got it, kiddo. It looks like a good opportunity for you." Madelyn smiled at Clarice's enthusiasm. "And it beats working in McDonald's like most kids end up doing."
"Ew, why would anyone do THAT?" she asked, wrinkling her nose, "Their uniforms and food are gross. But, Madelyn, you don't think being... me is a problem? For this."
"Honestly? I shouldn't think it would. Hospitals tend towards the whole 'skill over appearance' thing, and as long as you prove you can do the job, I don't see why they'd have a problem. And if they do... would you want to work for them?"
Clarice paused, agreeing, but still unsure, "I just...I know I can do it. I just don't want to have to wonder. This isn't a paper application, it's tests and drills."
"Well, if it would help... do you want to go and talk to the people in charge before hand? I'd go with you, of course, if you wanted me to." And if there _was_ a problem, Madleyn decided, she'd be dropping a few hints about legal action and racism.
Clarice's eyes up lit up, "We can do that? Absolutely! Not now, but in a few weeks maybe? I mean, it's for the summer...but maybe more too."
"Of course - besides, the Professor would probably prefer we check the place out before you start, just to make sure there isn't any trouble..." Madelyn gave Clarice a reassuring smile. "Besides, I have to admit, I'm curious. It sounds like a great program."
"Good!" reassured, she headed out to the medlab proper to do some work, "And Maddie? I'm going to kick butt with experience."
"I have no doubt, kiddo," Madelyn told her with a smile.
