Manuel, Amanda, dinner and a movie. Just normal folks.

Manuel got out of the car, then walked around to open Amanda's door for her - or he would have, had she not taken the initiative and done it for herself. "Well, here we are." he said, gesturing vaguely to the strip mall and the little all-you-can-eat Chinese place buried inside of it. The shoddy sign outside said "Wang's" in faded neon. "It may not look like much, but folks swear that it's the best cheap Chinese food in town."

Amanda hadn't even realised that Manuel was intending to open her door - she closed it behind herself, looking over the place. "Well, looks are decievin' an' all," she said with a grin. "Look at me." Slipping her hand into his, she gave him a bright, anticipatory smile - she was hungry, hence the need for cheap food. The Bottomless Pit needed filling. "Lets go, I'm starvin'."

Manuel looked back at the long-suffering Scott behind the wheel of the car, and mouthed "Thank you" to him. "Yes, let's!" he said to Amanda, walking in the door of the restaurant still holding her hand. Inside was pure Bedlam - apparently this was a busy time for them, and the place was packed with a constantly swirling sea of humanity, all centered around the buffet tables. "Table for two." he told the perky little half-Chinese girl behind the counter, and then followed her out to a battered booth near the back of the restaurant.

The smell of food made Amanda's stomach rumble, and she looked around the crowded room with interest. "Interestin' place," she said as she shrugged off her coat before sliding into the booth. Hat and scarf followed - it was _cold_ out there, and they'd be walking to the movie theatre later. "How'd you find it?"

"I asked around." he said simply. "Notably, I asked Doug and Jamie. They both said the food here was pretty decent, and the price couldn't be beat." And that it was a completely normal little slice of America, which was what closed the deal for him. The waitress took their drink orders (water for him) and then Manuel stood up again, pushing his own jacket and hat to the far side of his booth. "Well, I believe that it's a serve-yourself sort of a deal. Shall we?" he asked her with a grin.

"Just try an' stop me," she replied, practically bouncing from her seat. She'd had to make do with soda, but for once she didn't actually feel like drinking. Just enjoying the time with Manuel. Joining the vague queue at the buffet, she grabbed a plate, hesitating a little at the unfamiliar names on the labels before deciding it couldn't be stranger than any of the things Tante Mattie had fed them.

Manuel grabbed his own plate as well. Unlike Amanda, he knew what this stuff was supposed to be. Sighing, he picked the least-offensive items off this buffet line and made neat piles of them on his plate. A lot of rice (it was hard to fuck up rice) and a lot of vegetables. For some reason, he wasn't much in a meat mood lately. Once he had enough, he went back to the table, where he was pleased to note that the drinks had already arrived. Sipping at his water, he made a face and then resolved to leave it strictly alone - Emma's bottled-water habit had infected him, and this stuff tasted like it was straight from the tap.

Amanda had piled her plate high with pretty much a little bit from every thing, with a good base of rice to soak up the sauces. Hoeing into it as soon as she sat down, she was probably half way through before she noticed Manuel was into the rabbit food tonight it seemed. "Not hungry?" she asked, taking care to swallow the mouthful she had before speaking - table manners were slow to come, but she was getting there. "'S not bad. Not that I've had much Chinese before - 's probably nothin' like the real thing, like Indian curry in England."

"It's not." he said with absolute certainty. "And my food tastes are changing. A lot of the meat dishes over there just weren't holding much appeal for me." he said. "But you go on, eat! That's why we're here." To make his point, he speared an errant piece of asparagus and chewed on it slowly. He was determined to roughen up his palate, to force himself to enjoy this sort of cuisine. His chances of getting access to really well-prepared and well-presented cuisine were vanishingly small, especially since he could practically _feel_ tension coming off of Lorna in waves any time he happened to be in the kitchen with her. It was puzzling. And, as he had discovered, he was mostly hopeless in the kitchen. It had cost him $50 to make sure that no-one found out about his attempt to cook Amanda breakfast one morning.

Amanda didn't really need the encouragement - the food suited her tastes pretty well, being greasy, high in carbohydrates and protein, and a tad on the bland side - really spicy food she only really liked when she was drunk. Something about the numbing effect of beer on the tongue. "So, besides this secret new project that you can't tell me about, what else did you get up to while I was gone?" she asked, curious about the change in tastes but letting it go for now. It happened.

Manuel laughed. "Not a whole lot, actually. Econ is kicking my ass hard, but in the good way. I swear, if I see one more supply and demand curve I am going to turn into a ninja and flip out and kill people." he grinned. "Finance is actually really enjoyable, which surprised me. It's all about the money - how to get it, how to use it, and where it all fits in. The math is hard, but I can get help with that if I need it. So, how was your time in New Orleans? I take it you spent most of it being eaten alive by bugs and living in a swamp?"

"Pretty much," she said with a shrug. "Learned a bit tho', even if some of it wasn't what I wanted t' hear." She didn't elaborate, though - he'd probably notice eventually that she'd cut right back on the magic, but she wasn't going to out and say she was feeling like she was stepping into a minefield every time she even considered a spell. Or that she was feeling lost in a way she hadn't for a very long time. Manuel had lost his powers entirely - she wasn't about to dump her own powers issues on him. "Guess I'm gunna have t' swot hard t' get back up t' speed on classes - seems like I've been away more often 'n not this semester." She gave him a shy smile. "Thanks, for mentionin' punk on Alison's post." A hint of pink entered her cheeks. "Am I really yer other half? 'Cause that was nice t' read."

Manuel grinned at her. She was actually _blushing_! How fetching. "Depends. Do you want to be?" he asked her, studying her reaction carefully. "We've been bonded for a while now, you and I. We've been through a lot because of it - some good, some, err, not so good. If anyone knows me at all here, it's you. I'd say that qualifies you to be my other half."

"S gettin' on for a year, I think," she agreed, looking down at her plate since the blush was intensifying and she was feeling like an idiot. "But yeah, it looks like that's what we are, each other's halves." Underneath the table, she stretched out her foot and gently nudged his, since there was food in the way on the table. Dragging her gaze up to meet his, she smiled. "I like it," she admitted.

Manuel was more than willing to play a little footsie under the table. He kicked his loafer off and then ran his foot up her leg, as far north as he could reach without being blatant about things. "As do I." he admitted, then took another bite of his rice and vegetables. "It's nice to have somebody understand me. I've done such a wonderful job of getting myself across to the others, after all. I don't remember everything, but I do know that." he said with a frown. "I have to remember that not everybody had the kind of childhood I did, the same advantages, the same experiences. You've been a wonderful help that way, did you know that?" he said sweetly.

Oh, he was doing the thing with his toes... Shivering a little as he tickled behind her knee, Amanda dragged her attention back to food and conversation. "Well, I didn't have the same sort of childhood as you, but I do know 'bout havin' t' remember not everyone's had it the same as you. An' I'm glad I helped..." She shrugged a little. "Sometimes it felt like I was draggin' you down t' my level, sort of thing. But then again, I ain't so bad, or so people keep tellin' me."

Manuel took another bite of his food. Once he swallowed it, he grinned at her. "Not at all." he said. "I brought you up, you brought me down, we met in the middle where everyone else was as well. Or, at least, that's the idea." The asparagus here was actually really tasty, he was discovering as he hunted through his food to look for more. And water chestnuts were apparently grown on cocoa plants, and were thus related to crack cocaine.

Managing to almost clear her plate in the time he spent hunting for asparagus and water chestnuts, Amanda nodded. "We're doin' pretty good," she said. "'S been a crap few months, but we're sortin' things out now."

Manuel nodded, and took a few more bites of his vegetables and rice. He then pushed his plate away, still about half-covered with food. "Ready for another round?" he asked her with a grin. "You're probably still hungry, unless I miss my guess." He stood up and extended his hand to her, to help her out of the booth. "My sweet tooth is calling to me. I wonder what they have by way of desserts..."

She giggled. "You know me way too well," she said, taking the offered hand and sliding out of the booth. "They had a whole bunch of sweet things over there..." Pointing to the end of the buffet, she grabbed another plate as Manuel wandered dessert-wards.

"I've got a sweet thing right here I'd like to eat." he whispered into her ear as they walked to the dessert buffet line. "Ah, good!" he said, looking at their alternatives. He'd have to kill Amanda if she ever told anyone, but he had grown hopelessly addicted to the Jell-O with the fruit inside. Nothing that disgusting-looking should taste that good.

The Jello thing was cute. Adorable, even. And the whispering in her ear always made shivers go down her back - he knew she had a Thing with the ears. Leaving him to get dessert, she turned her own attention back to the other food; she didn't have much of a sweet tooth at the best of times, except for fruit. Filling another plate (and ignoring certain disgruntled looks from some of the stick-thin girls nibbling on a few vegetables), she waited for him to get his dessert before heading back to the booth. "You keep that up we'll end up not actually seein' the movie again," she teased, and then tilted her head at him. "D'you remember that? The date in New York?"

Manuel hrmmed and then nodded. "Bits and pieces." he grinned. "Not my best set of moments, if memory serves, but the film itself was ... enjoyable." he said with a laugh. "And dinner, if you discount me being a complete ass, was tasty enough."

"Not a complete arse - you had someone ridin' yer back pretty hard, pushin' you t' learn t' project..." And now they were skirting some pretty dodgy territory. "You remember me replacin' yer CDs? An' why? You weren't such an arse then."

Manuel hrmmed, and then shook his head. "Nope, sorry. That's a blank spot. I'm getting better that way, but there's still stuff that won't come back. That's one of them." he confessed, then took a bite of the Divine Jell-O - and smiled in sheer culinary bliss. "I do, however, remember a date in Spain." he leered.

She rolled her eyes slightly at him. "Figures, you'd remember that," she said with a slightly-wicked grin at the memory. "Mind you, it was pretty memorable. Pretty much an object lesson in why me an' mystic sites are a dodgy combination. Still a lot of fun, tho'."

Manuel grinned. "That's the part I remember - was there something that happened later that was dodgy? Because I remember having a very good time at the site itself." he purred. "Each drink of cider reminds me of that time."

"Well, if you don't count the part where I thought I got knocked up from fuckin' in a fertility site," she said wryly. "But otherwise, it was a lot of fun." Amanda smiled. "A good memory - besides, out of all that you ended up tellin' me you loved me for the first time, so it was definitely worth it."

Manuel blinked. Repeatedly. "But you weren't." he said, hoping for a little confirmation. And then a horrible thought hit him - the Mansion had a goodly number of Very Small Children in it - could one of them be his? He would hope that that would be one of the things he remembered, but one never knew. "And yeah, I do." he added with a soft, silly grin. "To this day."

"No, I wasn't. It was a false alarm," she reassured him, with a small chuckle. "Believe me, I would've told you long before now if there was a little Manuel runnin' around somewhere. 'Sides, I'm too young t' be a mum just yet."

Manuel released the breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "No argument there." he said with a laugh to release the last of his nervous tension. The possibility had rattled him, which was something worth looking into at a later point in time.

Much later.

He took another few bites of his Jell-O, then glanced down at his watch. Plenty of time, good. So he resumed playing with her legs with his toes, and watched her eat more than he took bites of his own food.

"One pack of sour candy things," Amanda said, passing said pack of sour candy things to Manuel as she returned from the snack bar. "An' popcorn for me." This despite the huge amount of food she'd eaten. "Think we can find seats up the back? Where we won't bother anyone if the film's not very good?" she suggested, with a saucy wink.

Manuel just grinned. "Yes, dear." he said obediently, in the manner of boyfriends around the world. "I like sour candy things. And bad movies in dark theaters." From what he'd heard, Alone In The Dark was supposed to be one of the worst movies _ever_, but it's not like he cared much. He was far more into being with Amanda than he was in the film.

"An' I like you," she said, stretching up on tiptoe to kiss his ear briefly. "Up the back it is." With another kiss, she added, into his ear. "Think you can be quiet?"

Manuel grinned. "Do you want me to be?" he asked her back, beeping her nose and grinning at her. "Usually you're Little Miss Moaner." The kiss on his ear sent a very pleasant shiver up and down his spine. "It's very hot." he told her quietly, just to see her reaction.

"Well, wouldn't want t' spoil the movie for everyone else," she pointed out, wrinkling her nose at him. She couldn't resist kissing him properly at his words, 'though. "You're pretty sexy yourself," she murmured as she broke it off. "Have a lot of trouble keepin' me hands t' myself, 'specially in dark places."

"Oh, the horror." he deadpanned. "The tragedy of it all." He then laughed suddenly, and pinched Amanda's butt before walking into the theater. "Meet you there." he said with a wink before disappearing into their chosen theater.
