The meeting of two personalities is
like the contact of two chemical substances:
if there is any reaction,
both are transformed.

All her belongings were placed within boxes and set aside, ready to be picked up by courier. She zipped up her carry-on bag on her bed and with the rest of her suitcases packed and by the door, she realized there was nothing holding her back from leaving.
Except for.... Yes, there was one thing Betsy had forgotten and hoped she could still avoid.
Someone else, however, had noticed the signs and hadn't forgotten. And the link being dimmed for so long now meant that when Betsy was this inward focused, sneaking up on her was actually quite feasible.
"You're leaving." Leaning on the doorframe, Alison gazed at Betsy calmly, waiting for her answer.
"Word travels fast," Betsy said with her back still turned. She picked up her carry-on and finally faced Alison. "You seem....better."
"I am." Still not moving from where she was, Alison looked over the room - she wasn't surprised she'd had to hear the rumors to find out about Betsy leaving, though somewhere it hurt nonetheless. And she didn't want to ask if the purple-haired telepath was planning on coming back.
In her mind, Betsy had several conversations with Alison, all of which had started and ended less awkwardly than this one. "I can't lie to you and say I planned on saying goodbye," she said, callously, yet that was not her intention. "And I'm unsure if I will return. Right now, I'm uncertain about a great many things."
That was nothing new, though Alison didn't comment on it out loud. This wasn't the time for a confrontation, or for asking questions. Instead she just nodded calmly, taking a long breath and letting it out slowly. "Okay." She tilted her head to the side, gaze going over the room as she considered her next words, the deadened link still in the back of her mind. "Will you let me know when you do?" Or perhaps Betsy didn't even know that...
"Would it change anything?" Her right hand clenched the clasp of the shoulder strap. She merely held on tightly, bracing herself against something solid, tangible.
"It would to me."
She knew, suddenly, what was coming next. A simple formality, most likely, but one that would leave her aching later on, once Betsy had left and she had time to absorb things properly
"At first, I didn't want to leave. I railied against the Professor, practically begging him to stay. This place has become my home and I couldn't think of leaving it. But then, we both know that I haven't been here, not really. Not when it counted." She sighed audibly, feeling some comfort in admitting the truth.
"And as if further proof, from the Fates above, my one burden for staying, is effortlessly taken off my shoulders. I don't have to worry about him anymore, or for you for that matter." Betsy lifted her carry-on, placing the strap on her shoulder, and carried it over to the doorway. "There's nothing left."
Telling her she was wrong would, of course, yield no result at all - trying to actually get through to Betsy had been an uphill battle for more than a while, now. And if Scott had ever needed someone to help him, Alison thought, it was now more than ever before.
"I'll miss you." It was stating a simple fact, really. Alison didn't move as Betsy neared the doorway - there was ample room to walk right by her, should the telepath chose to do so.
"I'll send word when I make it somewhere more stable," she said, her expression hopeful. "I'll miss you too, Ali," and with the subtle clip of the connection that once bound them, Betsy felt her last hold within the Manor slip away.
She let herself get use to this feeling of emptiness, closing her eyes and reveling in it, before meeting Alison's gaze.
Somewhere, Alison suspected, referrring far more to the mind than the body. The severing of the psilink which had been there for so long, still present despite being damped down as it had been since Magneto's attempt to take Miles left Alison feeling unsteady, somehow. She just nodded, however - and stepped forward, hugging Betsy tightly. "Be good to yourself."
"You too," Betsy managed, her voice closing up on her. "Take care of..." Betsy paused a moment, shaking her head, decidedly leaving that thought unsaid. "See you."
"Yes. You will." Holding on just a bit longer, Alison sighed before finally making herself let go.
