Who: Hank McCoy, Jubilation Lee
When: 28th March 2005 Time: 11pm
What Happens Jubilee goes to talk to Hank about lists.

Hank had just headed down to the medlab to take the shortened night-shift that was all he was allowed at the moment.... at least it meant that Jean and Moira were both getting sleep. He'd just gotten comfy at his desk when he saw the message from Jubilee... and it wasn't long after that at all that he heard the patter of hurrying feet. He looked up, smiling, as she appeared in the doorway. "Well, hello, my dear," he said cheerfully. "Staying up late again, tonight?"

"Always up late these days, BB. Study an all." Jubilee replied, closing the door softly behind her as she started pacing the room. "Okay, like, I totally can't do a things I have learnt thing. Cause I'd just end up puttin' my foot firmly in my mouth and then people would be all grr at me again and I'd be all ARGH! I can't believe you're all so uptight about this and then they'd be all 'more grr' and I'd be. 'Right, I'm gonna go hide and think up really nasty diseases you could all catch'. So, like, just wouldn't work, ya know?"

Hank smiled. "I was going to offer you some fudge, but I'm not sure I should now. You sound hyped up enough." He offered her the fudge anyway. "Jubilee, why are you so sure that you'll wind up putting your foot in your mouth?"

Jubilee took a piece of fudge - not one to ever turn down chocolate of any kind...except maybe the carob stuff, because that tasted like ass. "Always do. Why should this time be any different? Especially when talkin' about the last year. I did a lot of things that, well, weren't exactly 'finest hour' type things."

"But you learned from them," Hank pointed out, taking a piece of fudge himself. "At least, I'm fairly sure you did. You've come a long way, in the last year." He smiled at her a little. "And thank you, by the way, for the credit for helping you with your algebra. I'm sure there are others who'd like to know that you learned something from them."

Jubilee flopped down onto Hank's couch, pulling the fudge apart slowly and popping small bites into her mouth. Even after all this time she was still frugal with things like chocolate. You had to eat it slowly, savour each bite. It wasn't something you just wolfed down, especially when you might not get more for awhile.

"What if I didn't? Learn from it, I mean. What if it's just that I've not had the opportunity to screw up again, an that's why I've not fucked up somethin' big time in awhile?"

"I think you have learned things... you're making an effort to do so, certainly." Hank put the box beside her, where she could have more fudge if she wanted it. "You're always going to screw up now and then, Jubilee. Everyone does. But you're learning from your mistakes, and they'll get less frequent."

"I know. Just, tired of havin' ta try so hard all the time, Hank. Just wanna be like everyone else." Jubilee replied and then smiled as she realised how whiney she sounded. "An I think I'll have some cheese with my whine too."

He laughed softly. "I know how hard it is, my dear," he said, reaching over to pat her shoulder gently. "Or at least, I can imagine. If it helps at all, it's only going to get easier. The more you learn, the better you get the hang of this, the easier it will get." He smiled at her. "And if you ever want to just let go and say whatever comes into your mind, come and say it to me, if you like. I promise not to grrr at you. And I have a good grrr. " He produced a deep, rumbling growl from the depths of his chest, by way of demonstration.

Jubilee grinned and fished another piece of fudge out of the box. "Thanks, BB. Think I'll take ya up on that sometimes, when things get too hard. An I guess I can write this top ten things. But maybe I'll wait till the mornin', when I'm thinkin' clearer."

"Always a good idea." Hank nodded. "Believe me, I've gotten myself into hot water a time or two by writing midnight emails on disruptive or annoying subjects. My trouble is that I know that I'm a genius, and therefore I fall into the trap of thinking I'm brilliant all the time, when in fact I'm only brilliant when I'm fully awake and there's not too much blood in my caffiene-stream."

Jubilee gave in and giggled at that image. "So, what are you doing up so late, anyway? I know I'm studyin' but I hadn't expected anyone else to be awake."

"I'm on night shift," Hank explained. "Only six hours, but it means that Moira and Jean can get an uninterrupted sleep every night. I was on nights before... well, the Mistra thing... so I'm still in the habit, and I can manage night rounds even on a wounded paw."

"How is the leg?" she asked, gaze concerned as she tried to get a good look at his leg from her position on the couch.

"Getting better." Hank smiled, lifting the leg so she could see the neat white bandage wrapped around it. "I'm starting to look a bit mangy, though... a dozen shaved places for stitches, between the Reavers and this, not even counting the leg." He sighed mournfully. "Fur is so hard to keep nice."

"Doesn't look so bad, Big Blue. An just think about when you're all better, hey? You'll be as furry and glossy as ever." Jubilee replied, thoughtfully. "An well, it'd be a good thing if you didn't get yourself hurt again after that. There's people that were worried about ya out there, ya know."

"Oh, really?" Hank gave her a teasing little grin. "Like who?" If she didn't want to say that she'd been worried, she could always pass it off as a joke.... but he hoped she didn't. He'd gotten kind of attached, lately... she was such a sweet kid, sometimes, albeit as prickly as a hedgehog at other times.

"Like me." she whispered, suddenly shy.

She still wasn't sure of this whole attachment thing that was starting to happen with people at the mansion. Whether it was wanting the respect of people like Alison or Scott, or being drawn into friendships with her classmates...or the closeness she felt for Madelyn and lately to Hank.

Too many avenues for future pain and she was so unsure if she could keep any of them safe.

Hank reached out to take her tiny hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "Thank you, Jubilee," he said softly. "It means a great deal to me that you care enough to worry about me." He smiled at her. "I promise, I'll be very careful next time - as I am every time, or try to be." He reminded himself that he couldn't get TOO attached... Madelyn had dibs on Jubilee as 'her' kid. And she didn't need adopting anyway. But maybe just a little bit, say every other Thursday.

Jubilee nodded and pounced, giving him a tight hug before heading for a door with a bounce in her step. "Gotta go, Hankster. Study to do."

She paused for a moment by the door, a smile flitting across her features before she slipped out.

*grins* Maddie doesn't mind sharing custody, especially since she's so busy lately. Very cute log guys. And added points for the Crowded House song as the cut tag...

Glad you like it! *g* And Hank is happy to know she doesn't mind sharing. He'd never want to come between them, but Jubilee keeps being incredibly sweet at him and turning him to avuncular putty.

Then help she shall have!
