Cookiess!!
Apr. 12th, 2005 08:24 pm Shortly after Jake (re)introduces himself, Dani comes by with welcome-cookies. They meet and discuss the school and backrubs. They both end up somewhat confused by the other.
One good thing about teaching the little kids how to cook, Dani thought, was that there was always waaaaay too many sweets made and in this case, cookies. Cookies were a good class default, the kids had become adept at them and she let them experiment with teh dough too, adding different ingredients and whatnot. Surprisingly, most were even edible.
Arms with a selection of cookies and of course, two glasses of milk,
she headed towards Mr. Gavin's office, knocking awkwardly on the door with one foot, trying not to spill anything.
Jake looked up from his files. There was a thing in Croatia he wanted Remy to check out, but it wasn´t anything urgent, so if someone thought it was time for him to take a break... "The door´s open!"
"Yeah?" Dani called through it, trying to rearrange things to get the knob. She gave up when the nearly dropped everything, "You gotta get it if you want cookies!"
He was on his feet and over by the door in seconds. "Hey! You´re Danielle, right? Come on in. Do you want me to take any of that?" Without waiting for an answer, he grabbed the plate, and ushered her in. "Oh, and watch the boxes. They´re everywhere, and I´m fairly sure they breed in the dead of night."
Dani's eyes narrowed and she tried not to glare at his back. He was new. It wasn't polite. And he was friends with the druken whiteman which meant he was probably somewhat slow, even if he felt nice and slightly chaotic, "I'm fine," she insisted, navigating the cluttered office, "But yeah, I'm Dani, Mr. Gavin."
Putting the plate down on the desk, he eyed her for a moment, then sat down. "Thank you for this, by the way. I tend to forget to eat when I get caught up in something, which isn´t very good for my powers."
Nodding, Dani sat, moving some of the papers. Hopefully they weren't important. "It ain't good for anyone not to eat," she admonished, gesturing for him to take a cookie, "Mr. Dayspring's off the lunch list, you want to take his place?"
Jake brightened. People who wanted to bring him food was instantly on his Good People list. "Absolutely, if it´s not too much trouble for you? I still have a whole bunch of papers here to sort out -- as you can probably see -- so I´m going to be busy for at least another week."
Dani shrugged looking around, "It can't be that bad. I mean, they're grouped somehow, ain't they? By topic or something?" she rifled through a pile on the cushion next to her, "These all seem to be about something in Africa."
He gave her a wry look, and took a bite of his cookie. "I know. That´s because I just finished organizing them. I think Wisdom was filing them after who he heard it from, or how important he thought it was or how likely it was. Possibly a mix. He did file the stuff he thought belonged together together though, so that helps."
Oh. Figured. "I don't know..." she took a cookie munching warily, "You
ain't gonna propose now, are you?"
"Heh. I would have, but it didn´t seem like you´d appreciate it much." Jake grinned. "So I´m going to have to come up with something else. What do you enjoy doing?"
Grinning, Dani rubbed her back, "Backrubs are my newest best friend. Sorry about not marrying you, but being married and divorced before you're 18 ain't such a great thing. I'm not sure I could handle two marriages. It ain't you, though," she hurried to assure him.
Jake laughed. "I didn´t think it was. You don´t know me well enough for that. Backrubs, huh? I think I could do that. But, first I must have cookies. Who made these, by the way?" he added, eyeing the frosting. Was that a spider?
"The beginning cooking class," Dani told him, still fiddling with some
papers, "I'm teaching it right now since Mr. Dayspring can't, but really, it's his class."
"Nathan Dayspring teaches a cooking class?" Jake blinked. "Surreal. Does he wear one of those chef hats?"
"Nah," Dani shook her head, stealing another cookie. Mmm, applesaucey. "But he has one of those aprony things. If you come down for lunch I'm usually there cooking, but Ms. Dane's in charge of dinner. I do her paperwork."
Amused, he wondered out loud, "Do you go to school here or work here?"
"Yes," she replied, before taking pity on his befuddled look, "I can't afford tuition so I help out where ever I can. It ain't a fair trade really though, because they won't let me do more," she made a face at that.
He picked out a cookie with a clown face on. "Well, you can become really rich and donate loads of money, when you´re older. Schools always appreciate that."
Dani looked at him funny before getting up to leave, "I ain't gonna be rich, Mr. Gavin."
"Well, you don´t have to." He watched her walk towards the door. "Thank you for the cookies and the milk, Dani. I appreciated it."
Nodding, Dani left the room.
