Oct. 26th, 2003 07:29 pmFluff with a side of angst. But all's well that ends well.
The bowling alley smelled like beer and cigarettes and neither of these bothered Alex as he happily poked through the different sizes of bowling balls. He hadn't been bowling in what seemed like forever and it seemed to bring out the little kid in him. He looked over to where Lorna was still changing shoes. "What size ball can I find for you, hun?"
Lorna tightened her laces then grinned up at Alex, “I don’t think I’ve been bowling in ages. Better give me something light and girly. Maybe 12 pounds?” She let him go hunting as she programmed their names into the computer.
Alex spotted the perfect ball. He picked it up and placed it in ball return. "12 pounds and bright green. How appropriate." He winked at her while placing a slightly heavier red ball next to it for himself.
Lorna picked it up and tested the spacing on the holes. “Perfect,” she declared, miming a throw. She put the ball back down and wandered back to his side and kissed him quickly. “You’re up first, love.”
Kissing her back quickly, he jumped up and picked up his bowling ball. It took Alex a moment to get used to the weight of the ball in his hand, then he stepped up the lane and gave it a throw, where it hit the lane with a loud "thunk" then preceded right into the gutter. He came back to Lorna slightly embarrassed. "Can ya tell it's been a while?"
She laughed and hugged him. “Trust me, I’m not going to be any better. I’m more of a tennis girl.” She handed him his ball as it returned, “Don’t sweat it.”
He couldn't help but smile. "I won't if you say so. Me and balls just don't get along. Why do you think I surf and skate in the first place?" He grinned playfully as he took his ball from her and kissed her playfully on the cheek before going for his next shot, resulting in two pins falling.
“I’m terribly glad to hear that,” she said with an impish grin, “I won’t have to worry about losing you to John.” She grabbed her own ball and winked before darting away to toss it down the lane.
Alex burst out laughing. "Good grief! Nope, you don't have to worry about losing me to him." He stopped laughing to take a deep breath, but still smiling "That's not what I meant and you know it."
She batted her eyelashes at him, “I’m just saying, John’s pretty hot and you never know, you could have been tempted.” Her second shot, unlike her first gutter ball, went straight down the lane and swiped a good seven pins. She gave a little jump of success and bounded back to the seating area.
"Nice shot!" Alex gave her a proud smile before picking up his ball out of the return. "John hot? Could have fooled me. Now that Paige Guthrie...she's a looker." Giving an impish smile of his own he went to take his shot, taking out three left side pins.
Lorna rolled her eyes, “If you don’t mind being one of a crowd, I suppose. But yeah, Paige is a cutie.” She took advantage of his next shot to quickly alter her score in the system and gave herself a strike for the first frame then maintained an innocent expression as he came back. “Still, not as hot as John. Relatively speaking.”
Alex took his second shot, knocking down six, leaving only one standing. "Damn, so close." He turned and came back to Lorna. "If you say so, I really wouldn't know." As she stood up, he noticed the added strike and during her next shot, proceeded to change it to two gutter balls.
Lorna’s next throw resulted in a seven-ten split and she muttered death threats at the remaining pins. “Not as cute as you, of course,” she said cheerfully as she came back to retrieve her ball. She missed entirely on her next shot and pouted.
"Naturally." He stood up and gave her a quick hug before grabbing his ball. "And Paige is nothing compared to you, my green haired beauty." Taking his first shot, he successfully gutter balled it.
Lorna, of course, changed her score to two strikes as soon as she had a chance. “Naturally,” she mimicked back at him as she automatically checked the bandanna over her hair.
As he returned to pick up his ball, he noticed her fidgeting with the bandanna. "Stop worrying about your hair. It's too sexy to hide...really." He took his next throw, taking out half the pins.
"We all have our little quirks. I've got 19 years of practice being paranoid about my hair." She applauded his throwing and followed him up when he went to take his next shot, maintaining a serene smile that turned wicked as she tickled him just as he let the ball go.
Alex let out an undignified squeak as she tickled him, causing the ball to go rolling right into the gutter so hard that it almost bounced out and went into the other lane. He turned to look at her wide eyed. "Not fair! And for that, I'm taking this." He pulled the bandanna out of her hair and ran back to the computer terminal.
Lorna shrieked and gave chase. "Give me that!" She caught up and snatched at the bandanna that he held out of her reach.
Ignoring the people staring at them, Alex dodge out of her reach so that the ball return was between them. "What if I said...no?" He gave her an evil grin. "Come on Lorna, it's your turn."
“I’d say that you were taking your life into your hands.” When he just continued to grin at her, she threw her hands up in frustration. “Alex! You are interfering in the matters of a girl and her hair style!” She grabbed the vividly green ball, walked up to the lane, threw and walked away without watching it.
He also ignores the throw, more interested in Lorna's reaction. "Interfering? More like rescuing. Your hair is too gorgeous to be covered." She still looked like she was going to take his head off, so he came around and gave her the bandanna back, but he managed to run his hand through the green hair that fell next to her face before she hid it again. "Beautiful, such a pity to hide it."
She tied the bandanna over her hair again, “Thanks.” She sighed and rested her head on his shoulder for a moment, “Like I said, years of paranoia.” She glanced down the lane then up at the scoreboard and her eyes widened. “It’s your turn.”
Alex hugged her gently. "Paranoia shouldn't stop you from being who you are." He narrowed his eyebrows when she said it was his turn. "But you've only had ...one..." he turned around and saw the strike on the scoreboard. "Wow."
“Yeah, that would be nice.” Lorna kissed him, “Beat that, darling.” She shoved him in the direction of the lane then sat down to gloat properly.
Alex still couldn't believe the score on the board as he picked up his ball and proceeded to throw it down the lane, leaving him with a split. "Oh wonderful..."
“Aw, poor baby. Did you need me to help you?” Lorna teased.
He gave her scowl to show he wasn't amused. "I can do it myself thank you."
She hopped up and retrieved his ball. "Betcha can't."
He smiled. "You’re right, I probably can't." He put out his hand for his ball. "But I'm going to try"
“That’s the spirit.” She handed it to him and waited patiently.
Alex took the ball from her and went to throw it. He couldn't watch so he closed his eyes.
Lorna grabbed Alex's wrist and dragged him away from the lane, totally uninterested in the result of his throw. Once they were off the wood and onto the tile, she wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him. "We suck at bowling," she said confidentially.
Alex allowed himself to be dragged off, more interested in Lorna's actions than if he got the split. He opened his eyes and looked down at Lorna through the blond hair that fell into his eyes, wrapping his arms around her to return the hug. "I second that."
Brushing the blond strand off his forehead, she grinned cheerfully up at him, “I won’t tell if you won’t. We’ll just pretend that we’re both phenomenal bowlers who should turn pro and no one will be the wiser.” Stretching up on tip-toe, she kissed him. “Sound like a plan?”
He chuckled softly before kissing her on the nose. "Sounds like a plan. You’re brilliant, you that?"
“I’m all about the Really Cunning Plans.” She laughed, “So since we suck so badly and we’re going to lie about it anyway, do you want to finish out the game or just blow it off and go find someplace else to scandalise the natives?” She nodded at the group of bowlers three lanes down who were far more interested in Alex and Lorna than in their own game.
Alex followed her nod and laughed as he noticed they had a crowd of onlookers. "Well, since we are professionals, we don't want to upstage any of the other bowlers. I'd say let's find somewhere else to put on a show." He gave her a playful wink as he lifted her from the waist and twirled her around.
She laughed again, “It’s only fair of us. How do you feel about miniature golf?”
Setting her down, Alex thought about this a moment. "If it requires less skill then bowling, I'm in."
“No skill at all if you don’t mind ignoring pesky rules like oh using the putter and not kicking the golf ball.” She grinned, “I’ll even help you with your practice swing.”
"Now that sounds like my type of game." Without removing his arms from her waist, he kicked off his bowling shoes. "But does it require such fancy footware?" He joked.
“Only if you’re a fifty year old man.” She toed her shoes off as well. “And in that case, you also need a silly hat and funny pants.”
"Ick, no thank you." He bent down and picked up both sets of shoes, then slipped his feet into his over sized sneakers. "Shall we then?"
"Let's." She stepped away from him to step into her boots and zip them up. "We're too good for this place anyhow."
He couldn't help but laugh. "Most certainly my dear." As they walked to the counter, his stomach growled. "How about some ice cream on the way?"
“As you wish.” She walked with her arm casually looped around his waist. “Least I can do is spring for ice cream after kicking your ass the way I just did.”
"Hmm, yeah right. I know the last strike was yours, but do you really think I wouldn't have noticed the two added ones?" He raised an eyebrow as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m just a natural at this game.” She managed to keep a straight face though her eyes danced merrily.
Alex laughed as he kissed her on the temple. "Whatever you say, my dear."
“I am. I’m an undiscovered bowling virtuoso,” she nodded solemnly, happily cuddling into his side, “and after the ice cream, I’m going to do the same at mini-golf.”
"Right..." Alex couldn't keep the smile from his face. "We'll have to see about that..."
Lorna grinned cheerfully. She had more confidence in her ability to cheat at mini-golf. So long as she got to keep the scorecard. “So what kind of ice cream did you want?”
"Something fruity. And why do I worry about having a "cheating" girl friend?" He smirked at her, waiting for a reaction.
“Who me?” she smirked right back, “I can’t imagine why. I’m as sweet and uncomplicated as apple pie. I’m practically the poster child of innocence and good-will.”
Alex snorted with laughter. "Oh wonder and she's comedian as well."
“You doubt my word?” Lorna punched him in the side, not hard enough to hurt just enough to get him to stop laughing, “This is slander!”
Alex rubbed his side with one hand and wiped away the tears in his eyes with the other. "Alright. Alright, I never doubted anything of yours. How about the ice cream be my treat to make up for it?"
“Okay,” she agreed far too easily as though that’s what she’d been aiming for all along. “And you can drive too.” She fished the keys out of her pocket and tossed them to him.
Alex held the keys as far away from him as he could. He was still in that terrified of driving stage and it was embarrassing that Jamie was a better driver than him. "Do I have too?"
“Pretty much, yeah. You’ll never learn otherwise.” Lorna slipped both arms around his waist again, “Relax, we’re going six blocks in a one horse town. It’s not like it’s the 405 through downtown L.A.”
Alex sighed. "Okay, but I'm doing this against my better judgement..."
“You’re a trooper.” Satisfied with getting her way, she marched them to the car—one of the few economy cars in the X-garage.
Alex sighed as he unlocked the car and got into the driver's seat. "So where is the ice cream place again?" He asked as turn on the car and put on his seat belt, hands shaking slightly.
Lorna fastened her own seat belt and half-turn to face Alex, “Six blocks down, take a left, then another left into the parking lot.”
He nodded and shifted the car out of park and into reverse. "Gotcha..." He turned in his seat so he could look where he was backing up. Luckily, the parking lot was pretty empty, so he didn't have to worry about many cars. Once he got the car out of the space, he shifted the car into drive and proceeded to head for the ice cream shop.
Lorna dug her nails into her palms but remained outwardly calm, offering the occasional suggestion and reminding him of little things like the turn signal and speed limit.
Without anything majorly bad happening, he pulled into a spot in front of the ice cream shop. He gave a big sigh as he turned the car's engine off. "Well, that wasn't so bad..."
“And you were worried. Silly rabbit.” She leaned over and kissed him soundly. “Don’t forget to set the parking brake.”
He smiled has he did as he was told. "Wasn't as bad as I thought." He took the keys from the ignition and threw them to Lorna before getting out. "But your still driving home."
"We'll see. If you can beat me at miniature golf, I'll consider it." She pocketed the keys again then offered him her hand.
Alex laughed and shook his head as he took her hand and led her into the store. "Oh no, no bets on miniature golf, especially if you’re the pro you say you are!"
"Curses, foiled again." Lorna laughed, "Oh well, I think of something."
"And I'm sure you will." He led her to the counter and stood behind her as they looked through the glass at all the choices of ice cream, his arms around her waist and his chin on her shoulder. "So what are you going to have?"
Lorna looked at all the flavors and thought about the calories involved. She tapped on the glass, "The strawberry yogurt." she indicated the fat free yogurt, "Just a small one."
Alex playfully squeezed her waist. "Oh come on now, you can do better then that!"
Her jaw tensed for a moment, “That’s all I want, Alex.”
"Lorna, you have nothing to worry about. Real ice cream isn't going to hurt you."
"I think that of the two of us, I'm the one with a better background in food." She shook her head and pulled away, "Just get what you want. I'm not hungry."
Alex frowned, very confused at Lorna's sudden change in attitude. "Lorna, are you alright?"
"I'm fine, Alex. I'm just not hungry," she folded her arms defensively. "Get your ice cream."
"Um, okay." Very confused, Alex turned around and ordered two scoops of strawberry and chocolate in a cone. Before he paid, he looked over at Lorna. "Are you sure you don't want anything?"
"I'm sure. Ready to go?" Lorna pulled the keys out her pocket again and walked out of the shop.
Alex nodded then paid. He followed her out to he car, licking his ice cream and afraid to say anything to upset her further.
Lorna spent a moment adjusting the mirrors and composing herself. This is why I cook most of the time. she reflected sourly. By the time, Alex opened the passenger side door she was able to smile sweetly at him. "Sorry, hon. I didn't mean to go all Exorcist on you."
"Are you going to tell me what happened or is just going to remain one of those mysteries that keeps our relationship interesting?" He tried to say that seriously, but the mood was ruined when he had to catch a drip of ice cream before it reached his hand.
She merely grinned at him and started the car. "Careful. Scott will kill you if you ruin the upholstery."
He grinned back. "Right"
"And now I shall proceed to smack you around on the mini-golf course." Lorna tossed her head and started the car.
"or so you think. I'm going to be watching you closely this time." Alex had licked the ice cream down to the cone and was now happily crunching away.
"Watch away, my love. You might even learn a thing or two."
"Right learn a thing or two so next time I go with someone to miniature golf, I'll know how to guarantee winning whatever bet was made at the beginning. This could be fun!" He gives her an innocent face as he pops the last bit of cone into his mouth.
"Unless that person is me," Lorna agreed, "for you will always lose to me." She drove to the minature golf course and parked.
"As you wish, my darling."
She got out of the car and crossed around to the other side of side to lean on his door as he got out. "Hey, Alex?" she smiled at him, "I love you."
Smiling he wrapped his arms around her waist as he stood up. "Hey Lorna. I love you too." He bent down slightly to kiss her.
She could taste the ice cream on his lips and sweetness made her smile. She stepped up closer to him and raised up on her toes. Her hands linked behind his neck and her fingers tangled in his hair.
He lifted one hand to cup her cheek while the other remained on her hip. No matter what, a kiss made everything better.
