Thank you for making sure this was brought to my attention, Marie; I've spoken to Cain and reminded him of my expectations for his conduct.
I would point out, however, that I did not need to be "talked into" bringing him here; he needed help, and I gave it, as I have to so many of you. He has a long journey still ahead of him, but I assure you that despite his manner, none of the students here are in real physical danger from him. I would not have allowed him to stay if I thought otherwise.
And one final observation, if I may, and without any judgment implied: your anger at this incident is well-founded . . . but would have been equally well-founded last summer, when at least one student was regularly humiliated to tears in Logan's self-defense seminar--something of which I regret I was ignorant at the time. If we condemn one, must we not then condemn all?

Date: 2004-01-09 03:42 pm (UTC)Thank you for your response and for dealing with the situation. And, yes, I agree. The same conduct should apply to everyone. I did not attend Logan's self-defense seminar as I had a conflict in my schedule and I generally do not apply as a student for classes he is teaching for obvious personal reasons. You can rest assured that if I'd known about it or been present for it, I would have said something to him in person and on the spot and, that not being effective, I would have come to you. For the sake of the students and for Logan's sake or even Cain's sake, I don't think this kind of thing should be allowed to occur. It's not good for anyone, including the men in question. I don't think I can express how strongly I feel that the negative impact of such things goes /both/ ways. I don't believe that condemnation is in order in either case, though, merely assistance in correcting the problem.
