A few days after their fight, Jay and Mel offer apologies as best they can.
Mel had never been particularly talented at the harmonica. She liked it, sure, but never had had much time to practice.
But if the mansion afforded her anything, it was free time, so she perched on the roof and blew out something that sounded like ‘Amazing Grace’. The air was crisp and it wouldn’t bother Paige out here.
It was times like this when Mel missed her baby siblings. She was free to do all she wanted and play all she wanted and it was strange. No hollering from Jeb that she was giving him a migraine or Lewis asking to play along.
Jay heard the harmonica when he was doing a fly over and looked down to see Mel sitting on the roof of the porch. He fluttered down as best he could, trying not to dive bomb her. He stood on the porch edge opposite of her, just listening to her play as he tried to find the words to apologize for snapping at her as he had.
"Sounds good," he settled on.
Mel played the last few notes. It always left her twitchy to leave a song unfinished.
-than when we’d first begun.
It was okay at best. “Thanks.”
She had gotten a lot better over the years, and he could tell she was playing the good harmonica he'd found at the pawn shop for her instead of the one she was still "borrowing" from ex boyfriend number three.
"You fly up here?" He asked, not able to look her in the face.
“Yeah.” If he wasn’t going to mention it Mel wasn’t either.
"Mind if I sit up here with you?" Jay said, putting the ball in Mel's court. He had been the one to upset her, after all.
Mel motioned her head to the spot next to her. “S’all yours.”
Jay moved to sit next to her and, after a tick of deliberation, put his hand on her shoulder and squeezed it.
Mel shifted a bit closer to him. She wanted to say she was sorry for yelling at him, but what came out was: “Any requests?”
"You've always been good at 'I Saw The Light'," Jay said in lieu of his apology. It was a song that only the two of them really cared for making it one of their songs. And it was an acknowledgement of Mel's new powers he had yet to see. He moved so Mel could lean against him.
Starting up the first few notes, Mel tucked into Jay’s shoulder. It was a few beats slower than they normally played it but recognizable all the same. She’d missed this, their music.
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
